Chairman Wontumi Clashes with Samartex CEO

Disputes about permission to conduct business in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve have arisen between Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the NPP’s regional chairman for Ashanti, and Vincent Torgah, the company’s public relations officer. Conflict erupted after Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, ordered the Forestry Commission to stop Akonta Mining Company’s operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve of the Amenfi West Municipal Assembly. In accordance with a statement released by the Ministry’s Public Affairs office on Friday, September 30, 2022, the company run by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, the current Chairman of the NPP for the Ashanti Region, has been illegally mining in the forest. The attention of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has been drawn to publications about certain operations by Akonta Mining Limited in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Amenfi West Municipality in the Western Region.”Records available to the Ministry show that while Akonta Mining Ltd has a mining lease to undertake mining operations in some parts of Samreboi, outside the Forest Reserve, the company has no mineral right to undertake any mining operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve,” the statement said.According to the Ministry, while Akonta Mining Company had applied for a permit to mine in the said forest reserve, the Minister had yet to give approval to any such application hence rendering the activities of the firm in the said forest reserve illegal.Reaction to this in an Asempa interview monitored by GhanaWeb, on Tuesday (October 4), Wontumi insisted that he has the right to some parts of the Nimiri Forest and he is only awaiting a mining lease from the ministry to start the mining. He said that he has documents that show that he has rights to some parts of the forest reserve and that there is even a case that is yet to be determined by the court on who has the rights to the dispute parts of the forest.“If Samertex says they have the right to the disputed parts of the forest, they should provide their evidence like I have.“Akonta Mining is not mining in the forest; we only entered the forest about two years ago but Samertex knows that there have been illegal miners in the forest since 2013. Why did not report these galamseyers to the forestry commission?” he said in Twi.He added that his company together with some security only went into the forest to sack illegal miners who were already in the forest but they were attacked by officers of Samertex which led to the destruction of one of his vehicles. But, the PRO of Samertex, Vincent Torgah, who joined in the conversation, said that the claims of the NPP regional chairman were false.According to him, the Forestry Commission of Ghana which gives leases to forests in the country has on some occasions informed Wontumi’s Akonta Mining that it has no right to be mining in the forest.“The Ministry has told Akonta Mining on a number of occasions that it has no right to be mining in the forest.“But anytime we go to the forest with officials of the Forestry Commission, we see that the mining is ongoing. The security of Akonta sometimes refuse to let us leave the forest and we have to be rescued,” he said.</p>

Accra’s ‘biggest death trap’abandoned 17-storey building

The La Beach Skyscrapers, three 18 (ground plus 17) storey towers located on the Accra coast, were created as a novel and distinctive concept in beachside residential housing.

The project, which was co-owned by the late J. B. Danquah-Adu, Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, is alleged to have been put on hold following the legislator’s horrifyingly unexpected death in February 2016.

Years later, the structure has been referred to as a death trap that poses a serious threat to Accra’s landscape.

Additionally, there have been a lot of unconfirmed reports of eerie encounters at the construction site.

In an attempt to get a closer view of the building and understand some of the stories that have been told of the high-rise building, Kofi Adoma of KOFI TV and KOFI Radio, visited the building and captured scenes that show how much of a death trap the building poses.

With images shared on his social media handles, it shows the extent of damages caused to metallic equipment and tools abandoned in the building, badly rusted away.

This is also due to the fact that the building is located right on the coast, a situation that has compounded the rusting of tools in the building.

“From its position (close to the sea), building materials like iron rods, metals and others that are exposed to the breeze of the sea keep wearing off and corroding, and that makes the building weak and a death trap,” a caption on KOFI TV’s Facebook page read.

The caption also alleged that there have been deaths recorded at the site of the building, with residents living in fear that the edifice is haunted.

“Lot of deaths have been recorded from this place, residents living around this place say they are being haunted by the spirits of people who died there as workers or by accident,” it added.

But the biggest concern of the broadcaster is with how much a threat this abandoned building poses to the communities around it and its people.

“From afar, it’s just an abandoned building left to rot. From a closer look or view, this building is a death trap awaiting for its big swallow before action is taken,” the caption concluded.

It is unclear what authorities intend to do about this building, or what the way forward for the project will be but one thing is clear, the longer it remains abandoned, the more threatening it could be, especially considering its position.

Below are photos from the inside of the building, as well as a video that shows the extent of damage caused to the project:

appointed as the Chancellor of the University.”

“I commend the authorities of this University, for the excellent choice of a distinguished person, one who is also happily a firm believer of academic freedom, and I am hopeful that the University will definitely fill the added benefit of your rich experiences.“Nonetheless, I believe the University could not have picked a worthier leader than you. Your worth of experience, as a Board Chairman of Suame Magazine Industrial Development Organisation (SMIDO) indicates your in-depth knowledge and already established interest in Technical and Vocational Education.”
The Vice President, who could not hide his admiration for Dr. Addo Kufuor, showered more commendations on the respected statesman, and spoke of how he inspires many.“For me, today is a little emotional, because I personally know Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor,” Dr. Bawumia said.”We all know him as a brilliant mind, high academic achiever, high professional achiever, a statesman, a family man, a God-fearing man. But for me there is one thing that crowns all of these defining characteristics of this eminent personality. Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor is a man of integrity, and therefore is a mentor for all of us in public service. And so for Kumasi Technical University to choose him as your Chancellor, you have virtually won the lottery. You can be assured of stellar leadership.”
While assuring the new Chancellor and the University of Government’s support, he urged him and the University to help in making technical and vocational education, which the Government has prioritised, better.“I urge you Dr. Chancellor and all the heads of our tertiary institutions to continue to make adequate preparations towards the extensive call for prioritizing Technical Education in Ghana and beyond. The Free Senior High School and Free TVET Policies have become permanent features of our educational architecture and their foundations shall be embedded in other reforms in the TVET Education.”I assure you of the government’s steadfast commitment and continuous support to the Kumasi Technical University and indeed to all other TVET institutions in the country.”

ECG prepaid database hacked

ecg

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is still working to resolve the technical challenge it was experiencing in vending for prepaid consumers on E-cash and PNS metering systems of the company. The systems have been down for the past four days, since Tuesday, September 27, 2022. National Security and the Cyber Security Authority are on hand to help restore the systems.

Although there is electricity available, many prepaid system users are unable to top up their credits in order to connect to power, forcing them to resort to sleeping in the dark. The ECG is collaborating with National Security and the Cyber Security Authority to assist in system restoration. National Security is looking into the system’s possible causes and ways to prevent a repeat of the incident.

According to information obtained by Graphic Online from insiders at ECG, the systems have been infiltrated by outsiders who are now in charge of the source codes and have refused to give them to the ECG. In order to ascertain how the system could have malfunctioned and how to prevent a recurrence in the future, Graphic Online is informed that the National Security Agency and the Cyber Security Authority are assisting. Aside from that, the ECG is currently conducting an extensive audit of its system to determine what led to the technical malfunction that has impacted service for many of its prepaid subscribers across the nation.

National Security and the Cyber Security Authority is supporting to determine what could have happened to the system and how to forestall a future recurrence, Graphic Online understands. There is a high suspicion of the system having been hacked, hence the support from the Cyber Security Authority. Bawumia: Ghana will no longer use petrol in 50 years

Ghana’s Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans by the government to transition from the use of fossil fuel to renewable energy by 2070.

To that end, Dr Bawumia has called on stakeholders in the energy sector to accelerate the production and utilisation of oil and gas reserves in Ghana.Dr Bawumia was speaking at the official opening of the 5th Edition of the Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhIPCon), in Accra on Wednesday, 28 September 2022.“Let me add that Ghana has set a target of 2070 to fully transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. So, even though, as a government, we are fully committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, we also have to take steps to accelerate the production and utilisation of our oil and gas reserves”.“What this means is that even though we want to contribute to reducing emissions, we are of the view that a balance must be struck and maintained in the context of our social, economic, and environmental requirements.”“So, fossil fuels, particularly natural gas will continue to be part of Ghana’s energy mix in the short term, whilst strategies will be put in place to increase the share of renewable energy in the mix from medium to long term,” Dr Bawumia said. For his part, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, reiterated the government’s commitment to reduce petrol emissions.“We, at the NPA, are committed to supporting the government’s agenda in reducing the emissions from the energy products we consume in Ghana and I’m glad to mention we were the first west African country to reduce sulphur content in transport and industrial fuels from a maximum of 5000ppm to a maximum of 50ppm” he stated. The three-day conference is on the theme “Energy Transition in the African Petroleum Downstream Context: Prospects, Challenges and the Way Forward”.The conference is being organised by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) in collaboration with the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy and the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD).It has attracted major players including CEOs, experts and decision-makers in the petroleum sector across the West Africa Sub Region.

Boos dwarfed Kweku Baako, in a text message read by Kwami Sefa Kayi during Wednesday’s edition of Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, said “the President did not even hear or smell” that he was being booed. “The boos were dwarfed by loud cheers,” he pointed out. According to Kweku Baako, a careful study of the full video of the event will prove that the boos were from a “tiny” group of people standing behind while those in front were only clapping and cheering.”Their boos were inaudible,” he stated.

Strange Supreme Court decision prohibiting the use of birth certificates as proof of voting registration – Ofosu Ampofo

0

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has described the ruling of the Supreme Court that disallowed the use of birth certificates for compiling a new voter register as bizarre.

According to him, he is yet to comprehend the thinking that informed that decision. He maintained the NDC’s stance that the birth certificate should be accepted as one of the sources of identification when compiling the voters’ register. The Electoral Commission (EC) had proposed a new Constitutional Instrument for Registration of Voters which makes the Ghana Card the sole identification material for registration. The NDC challenged the decision in court but the Supreme Court upheld the EC’s decision to exclude the existing voters’ ID cards as well as birth certs as identification documents for enrolment on the new voters’ register. But Mr. Ampofo questioned that “When going for a passport, information from your birth cert is used to do the passport…the EC has said it would accept passports but has refused to work with birth certificates as proof that one is a Ghanaian. How can you accept the passport and not the birth cert?”“The Supreme Court decision is one of the bizarre judgments that I have seen in the Court in Ghana. I am still yet to come to terms on what informed that decision”, he said on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo Morning Show on Thursday. He added that many voters would be disenfranchised since “the Ghana Card is work in progress and not every Ghanaian has it and even the NIA has admitted that about 2 million Ghanaians have not received theirs due to logistical and other constraints.”

Aisha Huang’s bail request for 2nd time denied, adjourns case

0

An Accra Circuit Court has thrown out a bail application by lawyers for Aisha Huang and some 3 other Chinese Nationals for a second time. This follows their reappearance in court after an initial adjournment of the case on September 14, 2022

Aisha Huang and 3 other people are in court today facing accusations of engaging in illicit mining activities. Four additional charges, including conducting a mining operation without a license, facilitating the participation of individuals engaged in a mining operation, illegally employing foreign nationals, and entering Ghana while barred from re-entry, were filed at the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court on Friday, September 16, 2022, in addition to the initial charges of engaging in the sale and purchase of minerals and mining without a license. The current judge stated in court today, Tuesday, September 27, 2022, that the issue was one of public interest given the extent of environmental harm caused by galamsey operations. Citing threats by Ghana Water Company to shut down if nothing is done about galamsey activities, and the impact of same on marine species in affected waterbodies among others, the judge refused the accused persons bail. This is the second time the court has denied the accused persons bail. The first was on September 14, 2022, after lead counsel Nkrabea-Effah Dartey asked the court to grant his client and her three other Chinese counterparts bail.Aisha Huang’s request according to GhanaWeb’s court reporter was objected to by the prosecution.According to the prosecution, new arrests have been made therefore granting the accused persons bail may give them the opportunity to interfere with witnesses and investigations. The prosecution while citing public interest in the matter also argued that Aisha Huang has a history of sneaking in and out of the country and is therefore a flight risk. The accused persons remain in police custody. The case has since been adjourned to October 12, 2022.Drama in court:Chinese galamsey kingpin, Aisha Huang broke down in tears while in court on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.While it is unclear what warranted her tears, earlier reports from GhanaWeb’s correspondent indicated that one of her colleagues; the second accused; Johng Li Hua, herself a Chinese, fell sick during court proceedings and broke down in tears.According to her lawyer, Frank Kumako, his client, Johng Li was on some medications per information from her family. She was subsequently rushed to the hospital after she collapsed in the courtroom.
