The Former President on the new year Eve advise Ghanaians to take their Health serious as he linked it to the fast spread of the omicron Variant on his official Facebook page and wishes them a Happy Prosperous New Year as cited by countryghana ,This is what the former President said

Over the last 2 weeks, many people are nursing colds and flu-like symptoms, but with most people not going for a COVID test, it is being attributed to the seasonal harmattan weather.

Dr. Frank Serebuor, President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has put out a distress notice that medical personnel are overwhelmed by the numbers that are having to go into isolation because of the more transmissible covid-19 omicron variant.

The yuletide season was characterized by super-spreader events such as mega concerts, street carnivals and beach parties.

The New Year season is here! Let’s be more conscious of our health as we pray for health workers because of the more transmissible omicron variant.

Let’s also observe the COVID protocols. Observe social distancing, wash your hands as frequently as possible, avoid handshakes, use hand sanitizers and wear a mask.

And please GET VACCINATED if you haven’t done so yet. If you have, go for your second dose.

Stay safe this New Year season!

The Police Administration after reviewing the video footage has placed an amount of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵ 5,000.00) as a bounty for anyone who can provide information leading to his arrest to face prosecution.

We can’t build consensus whiles you attack me Bagbin to Afenyo-Markin

0

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has objected the comments made against him by Effutu lawmaker, Alexander Afenyo-Markin over the way he handled the sitting to consider the E-levy proposal.

Mr Bagbin said Afenyo-Markin asked him to show leadership in Parliament, a comment he judged as attacking his personality.

Speaking to state broadcaster, Ghana Television (GTV) on Thursday December 30, Mr Bagbin said what transpired in the House was not something everybody is happy with.
He said “It is something that we are all not proud of. Even though we know that before you can eat the egg you have to break the shell but you don’t want to go though it yourself. You think that you have learned the lessons of those parliament, I have a way of talking more, building consensus than exchanging fire. This is building confidence in the democratic system, it is a great achievement and I hope we will build on this.

“From 2001 up to date, I have never interfered with the functions of others, not even at the board level. But today, as I said there is change, I am prepared to accept this change, I am prepared to accept the criticisms but I want genuine criticisms. I want to be, at least, consulted before I am criticized.

“The time that I was seated there, the Majority leader only shows face and then send a text to me around 4:30 that he was now going to have a bite then come back to the House , he also whispered to my usher to to inform me he was going to have a bite and come back.

“When I left he wasn’t on the floor. How can you now, lead your team to now be attacking me and say that I should lead. In fact one of them said I should learn how to to lead. It is because the level of leadership I am at , he doesn’t understand it, that is someone who claims to be my son, the Honourable Member for Effutu, the Deputy Majority Leader, Honourable Afenyo-Markin. You come and you personally attack me then you come to the House and you expect that we should have that sprit of consensus building. Things don’t work that way.”

The Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is deputy condemned the Speaker over the way he conducted himself during the parliamentary sitting on the E-levy proposal.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu had expressed disappointment in him over the way and manner he conducted himself in Parliament on Monday December 20.

According to him, the Speaker left Parliament to his home without communicating to the Second Deputy Speaker whom he handed over to.
He described this as unfortunate.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday December 21, the Suame lawmaker said “He said he will come here at 11: 30 , subsequently another message came to say that he can only be here at 12. I mean, the house cannot be held to ransom by one person. It is most unfortunate.

“Yesterday leaving the seat he told the First the First Deputy that he was handing over to, that he will come back pretty soon and all that we heard was that he had left to his house, that is mots unfortunate without any further communication to the Second deputy Speaker or to me because I have been having some discussions with him and I am told today, that he didn’t even have any discussion with the Minority as well so where are we going from where. It is most unfortunate development.”

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu on Tuesday December 21 adjourned sitting to January 19.

The Majority Leader said the adjournment of the sitting on the e-levy would afford the Majority and government more time to do further consultations on the proposal.

“I think that this will also allow us sometime to have further consultations among ourselves, it is the reason why the First Deputy Speaker had to adjourn the House sine die. As you know, the budget has been passed , there was an attempt to portray that that there is no budget, there is a budget , the appropriations bill passed.”

He added “I think that this will also allow us sometime to have further consultations among ourselves ,it is the reason why the First Deputy Speaker had to adjourn the House sine die . As you know, the budget has been passed , there was an attempt to portray that that there is no budget, there is a budget , the appropriations bill passed.”

On Monday December 20 Members of Ghana’s Parliament could not hold their emotions as some exchanged brawls in the House just before the final vote on the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy Bill, also known as e-levy.

The sit-in Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, had announced that a division would be followed to approve the Bill, presented under a certificate of urgency, and he was going to vote as well in his capacity as a Member of Parliament.
That appeared to have provoked the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, who questioned his decision to vote after presiding over the night’s proceedings.
They moved to the front of the dais, issuing threats at the Bekwai MP.

This got the Majority MPs to also start agitations and immediately Mr Osei-Owusu handed the presiding role to the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the fight broke out.

NPP shouldn’t be overconfident in winning 2024 elections – Kobby Mensah

0

Political Communications lecturer, Dr Kobby Mensah, says the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) should focus on delivering its election mandate instead of thinking about how to win the next election.

The unofficial slogan of the NPP ahead of 2024 is ‘breaking the eight’ as they set sight of being the first political party to win three consecutive elections since the inception of the fourth republic.

Speaking exclusively to JoyNews’ Benjamin Akakpo, Dr Mensah explained that the NPP winning the next election will not be about sloganeering but the party’s ability to fulfil its electoral promises and a myriad of other factors.

“My argument is if Ghanaians think this administration has really discharged all it said it would do, and comparatively with the NDC, very well, then, of course, it’s not even a rocket science for any strategist to think that handing over to Bawumia can actually win the election.”

“Sometimes, the voters want new faces. You could actually look at one of the things in the 2000 elections; we have had PNDC-NDC for so long – 19 years, the same faces on TV. Sometimes people want to see fresh faces; they want to see what other people can…fresh ideas

He also waded into calls by sections of the party for Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Trades Minister, Alan Kyeremateng to be paired for the 2024 election.

He warned that may not be what the electorates want. He also noted that the Vice President had not delivered on the things he campaigned on before the 2016 elections.

“For me, saying that Alan-Bawumia will be pairing, I will ask you the question; is that what the voters want?’ You can use that to satisfy your party people to sort of bring unity. But the point is he [Bawumia] hasn’t delivered; we have to be straight.”

“I am number one fan of digitalisation, but it was not the concern of this country. The concern that he was brought to the ticket [based on his knowledge of] the economy, and you remember the last election when NDC selected Prof Jane, everybody said, she’s not an economist; how can she battle Bawumia? Bawumia has left the economic platform long ago; he doesn’t talk about the economy anymore,” Dr Mensah observed

Meanwhile, the Marketing lecturer outrightly rejected calls by Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs for incumbent NPP MPs to contest the party’s primaries unopposed, describing the calls as not democratic.

“That’s really surprising coming from a so-called democrat. If, for example, the President tells you that ‘I feel that I am doing very well and we’re on course for economic emancipation; as a result, I want to change the constitution for me to go for the next term’, would you be happy?”

“No one was born in Parliament. We are all outside Parliament, and there is nothing like an apprenticeship for Parliament.

“People do not have any work to go and learn the skills of Parliament other than going to Parliament. You [Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu] have been in Parliament for God knows how long; what have you done for Suame?” he quizzed.
