It Was Not My Fault: Tricycle Rider In Apiatse Disaster lament and Drops All The Hidden Details

The tricycle rider who is alleged to have caused the accident in the deadly disaster that happened at Apiatse in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region has shared a heartbreaking account of how the entire accident occurred. Since the news broke, the tricycle rider has been at the center of the entire brouhaha with many faulting him for causing the accident.

Initial reports indicated that the tricycle collided with the explosive vehicle and that triggered the entire disaster, but the rider holds a different opinion. During a visit by the vice president and his entourage to the hospital where the rider is currently on admission, he revealed all the hidden details.

He could be seen lying on the hospital bed with police officers guarding him under arrest. Since he is alleged to have caused the accident, they are waiting for him to be treated for the laws of the country to deal with him accordingly.

The rider, whose name is immediately unknown indicated that he was using the main road when another vehicle hit the back of his tricycle. He adds that he lost control and before he realized, the explosive vehicle was already close. He tried to save the situation but he was very close to the explosive vehicle and that triggered the fire. The rider believes that the vehicle that hit the back of his tricycle caused the accident and not him.

He has sustained minor injuries in the thigh and legs. The driver of the explosive vehicle is also reported to be receiving treatment at the hospital. However, he has since not been spotted. The two were saved because they noticed the veracity of the explosion earlier and decided to run for their lives. The driver for example is reported to have moved to the school in the community and pleaded with authorities to vacate the premises.

Both the motor rider and the explosive vehicle driver will be made to face the laws of the country in due course. They will have to provide answers to the entire nation on how the accident happened. If found guilty, they could face punishment including a prison term. For now, they need to be treated before their fate will be determined. It has also been established that the motor rider is a resident in the area and has been working there for many years. In the meantime, the Tarkwa government hospital is still treating many of the injured victims.

Bogoso Survivor speaks-I saw nothing after the blast

One of the survivors of the bizarre blow-up of a huge quantity of explosives in transit to a mine in the Western Region has shared his experience.

Survivor of Bogoso explosion speaks
The explosion shook a small village called Apiate in the Bogoso District of the minerals-rich Western Region.

Speaking to state-owned GBC, the survivor, a man in his late 40s, said he has lost a grandchild in the blast.

“When the fire started, my friends and I were close to the street. But we soon realised there was nothing we could do to put the fire out, so I went. When we got home, like many others, I was now concerned about what would happen if the fire spread to the light poles.

“Then we heard the loud blast. We saw nothing again. It looked as if every building in the town collapsed on the spot,” he said in Twi to reporters.

“I have lost a grandchild,” he added.

Police have said the huge explosion was caused by the detonation of an unspecified quantity of explosives in transit to a mining site on Thursday.

Police say the disaster occurred when the truck carrying the explosives collided with a motorcycle and a fire ignited, leading to the detonation of the explosives.

“Meanwhile, preliminary investigation has established that a mining explosive vehicle moving from Tarkwa to Chirano mines collided with a motorcycle resulting in the explosion.

“Most of the victims have been rescued and are on admission at various hospitals and clinics within the Bogoso Municipality,” police said in an update on the incident.

The huge explosion razed down homes and killed many people.

An intensified search and rescue led by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service on Friday have retried 17 bodies from piles of rubble.

Fifty-nine people are also receiving treatment at the Apinto Government Hospital for varying degrees of burn injuries.

“I am pleading the government and institutions to come to aid of the town. This has not affected one or two families. Everyone in the whole town has been affected. Houses have been razed to the ground; people have died. People have been injured,” the survivor pleaded.

Over 10,000 birds destroyed in Western Region-Bird Flu

0

Health authorities in the Western Region say stringent measures have been put in place to control the outbreak of Avian influenza in the region.

This comes after over 10,000 infected birds were destroyed.

There has been a spread of the bird flu in some parts of the country, including the Bono Region, where farms with over 9,000 birds were depopulated.

Officials in the Western Region say, they are not taking any chances, and have assured that the Regional Minister, together with the appropriate authorities, are working to contain the spread of the virus.

Western Regional Veterinary Director, Dr. Simon Gbene says: “We have depopulated all the farms and also disinfected the farms. We have put the farms under observation for three months, and then we will see if we will allow the farmers to go back to business because we do not want the existing birds to get onto the market. So far, 10, 000 birds have been destroyed.”

In 2021, seven regions reported cases of the flu; namely the Upper West, Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti, Volta, Western, and Western North Regions.

During the last outbreak, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced a total ban on the importation of poultry and poultry products from neighbouring countries where the prevalence of the disease was confirmed. There was also a ban on the movement of poultry and poultry products within and from the affected regions and districts to other parts of the country, and strict inspection and issuance of permits to cover the movement of all poultry and poultry products from unaffected parts of the country.

Strong economic growth, domestic revenue mobilisation being pursued – Akufo-Addo

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says the pursuit of strong economic growth and enhanced domestic revenue mobilisation will help the economy rebound faster from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the investiture of a new Vice Chancellor of the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, in Wa, on Thursday, 20th January 2022, President Akufo-Addo stated that, despite the difficulties confronting Government, the economy is experiencing a positive but slow growth in 2020.

According to the President, data from the Statistical Service puts the average growth rate of the economy for the first three quarters of 2021 at 5.2%, putting the country on course to exceed our provisional growth outturn of 4.4% for 2021.

“Our growth performance compares very favourably with the IMF growth estimate of 3.7% for sub-Saharan Africa, and 3.6% for ECOWAS countries. We are still on course in our fiscal consolidation agenda. The Ghana Revenue Authority exceeded its 2021 tax revenue target, and we are confident we will achieve, if not surpass, the eighty-billion-cedi (GH¢80 billion) target for this year,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo continued, “This combination of strong growth and domestic revenue mobilisation will enable us to meet our fiscal deficit target for 2022, and reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio, thereby providing fiscal space to continue to implement programmes such as our flagship programmes like the Free SHS policy, the One-District-One-Factory initiative and the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs, the development of our infrastructure, particularly our roads, and create more jobs for our youth.”

Touching on the creation of jobs for Ghanaian youth, the President told the gathering that the 2022 budget has set aside ten billion cedis (GH¢10 billion), for the next three years, in support of young entrepreneurs to enable them create new businesses and expand existing ones.

“Under the YouStart programme, Government, through the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), which proved its mettle in its efficient supervision of the seven hundred and fifty million (GH҃¢750 million) CAP Business Support Programme to micro, small and medium scale enterprises at the height of the pandemic, and the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), will direct financial and technical support towards young entrepreneurs in the country to develop commercially viable businesses, and create jobs for the youth,” he said.

The YouStart Programme, he added, will be a vehicle for supporting young entrepreneurs to gain access to capital, training, technical skills and mentoring to enable them launch and start their own businesses, and employ other young people.

“Successfully implemented, the YouStart programme will make a significant dent in youth unemployment, and enhance considerably social stability and progress. This University should be at the forefront of critically examining this initiative, and making proposals to enhance its implementation,” the President said.

New VC, Registrar
Congratulating Professor Philip Duku Osei and Mr. Job Asante on their appointment as Vice Chancellor and Registrar, respectively, of the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, President Akufo-Addo was confident that, in the two persons, “we have persons capable of laying a strong foundation for the rapid take-off of this University”.

“The Vice Chancellor’s induction into office today is a mark of the trust that the first-ever Governing Council of the University has reposed in him, and I am confident that this trust will not be broken. His wealth of experience, with decades of service, makes him an appropriate person for this all-important assignment. I want to assure him that my government will help ensure that the University fulfils its mandate,” he added.

It was, thus, the President’s that the University will produce graduates, who are moulded to take on the opportunities and possibilities for higher achievement, through creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation, and who will, thereby, help generate prosperity for the masses of Ghanaians.

He concluded by stressing that “You have my support and the support of Government in the pursuit of your progressive agenda for the University, which, Vice Chancellor, you have outlined in your acceptance speech. I wish both of you the very best of luck and God’s guidance in all your endeavours.”

Court issues warrant for arrest of Okraku Mantey

0

An Adentan circuit court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Mark Okraku Mantey, the deputy minister of tourism, arts and culture, for failing to appear before it.

The deputy minister has been charged for allegedly violating Sections 7 (1) and (2) of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act. The prosecution says he forcibly gained access to the land, owned by one Alhaji Tony Baba.

Okraku Mantey was to appear in court yesterday (18 January) to continue completion of the case management conference for the trial to commence but failed. His lawyer was also absent, but he sought permission from the court.

Prosecuting, Superintendent of Police Patience Mario prayed the court for a bench warrant to effect the arrest of the accused person. The court presided over by Sedinam Awo Balokah, issued the warrant and adjourned the matter to 8 February 2022.

Double claim
The case of the prosecution was that the complainant, Alhaji Tony Baba, was an estate developer residing in North Legon, Accra.

It said the complainant was developing a parcel of land at Oyarifa High Tension, ownership of which the accused person, too, was allegedly claiming.

The prosecution said on 3 March last year, the accused person went to the site with three “thugs” two of whom were on a motorbike and another in his (the deputy minister’s) car.

The prosecution said on 9 March last year, the accused person visited the site for a few hours, after which the “thugs” with whom he previously visited the site went back to the site and attacked the workers and caused damage to parts of the building allegedly.

It said the complainant reported the matter to the police and mentioned the accused person as the one behind the “unwarranted attacks and damages”.

Triple damage
The prosecution said that, during interrogation, the accused person was contacted to report at the police to assist in investigations.

It said while police were waiting for the accused person, more damage was allegedly caused to the three-bedroom building on 10 March last year, and Okraku Mantey was identified as the one who had brought and ordered the “thugs” to cause the damage.

The prosecution said that on 3 April last year, the complainant’s workers were allegedly attacked again and two people sustained injury.

It said the injured people were issued with police medical forms so they could seek treatment.

On 20 March 2021, further extensive damage was allegedly caused to the building, which had been built to lintel level and was valued at GHC63,700.
