I lied about Samira Bawumia –Sammy Gyamfi

Sammy Gyamfi, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDCdirector )’s of communications, has apologized unconditionally to the second lady of Ghana for making false statements about her.

Sammy Gyamfi claimed on November 7, 022, that Samira Bawumia brings her makeup artist and makeup gear in a brand-new Landcruiser during these difficult circumstances.

He questioned why the Second Lady would be callous enough to drive around with her makeup artist and kit in a landcruiser during these trying circumstances.

“…there is another person; her name is Samira Bawumia. Did you know that she always travels in a brand-new Landcruiser that is pulled by a makeup artist? He added on Accra-based Neat FM, “The Taxpayer is paying for that.

However, Sammy Gyamfi, a lawyer, made a dramatic about-face and apologized for lying about the Second Lady of Ghana in another interview on the same platform.

He said he was sorry for any harm the claim may have done to the Second Lady’s reputation and that there was not a shred of truth in it.

“The convoy carrying the Second Lady’s makeup artist and makeup kit does not include a single brand-new Land Cruiser. According to the office of the second lady, there is no V8 that transports her makeup kit and artiste, thus it is only reasonable that I retract. He apologized on the Accra-based Neat FM

Seth Terkper outlines what he will do to get Ghana’s economy on track

Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper has finally responded to calls by Samuel Koku Anyidoho’s calls on him to tell Ghanaians what he intends to do differently if he was the one managing the economy of Ghana.

Anyidoho in a tweet said, “I just want simple answers to my questions about the economy: My senior brother, Seth Tekper, given the opportunity, what would you do differently? Pls pls pls convince me I beg u”.

Responding to Anyidoho, Seth Terkper listed three things he will do differently to put Ghana’s economy back on its feet.

He said “Hi Koku, doing well? Ready to engage, been discussing a few (also what we did). 3 egs: i) if you borrow, learn to repay (Sinking Fund & debt/ratings wahala); ii) crisis are inevitable, prepare, w/ fields (Stabex/Contingency Fund, my crisis is bigger than yours is fallacy)”.

“3rd, if tax revenue is stagnant, reduce expenditure, however lofyvor well-meaning (recall E-schools in 2016?). Can’t borrow perpetually to finance them. Be targeted when you receive $6b (unprecedented, not even HIPC flows) for a crisis like COVID, topping 3 oil fields.”

“1st, negotiations were long in coming and not even the WB could have predicted the BRIC/EM meltdown in 2015. 2nd, Saudi etc withdrew funds from the markets for domestic needs at the time. 3rd, Ghn’s 2015 budget was based on a healthy $99 pbl, which crashed to sub-$35 pbl”

“4th, recall we suspended pricing for 2 wks, then realized some major non-resident holders of Ghn’s domestic Bonds, due in 2-to-3 mths, were bidding high or not bidding at all (potential arbitrage?). Clearly, we face a high local rate hike to rollover, @ about 30% plus?”

“5th, got 2 oilfieds in 2017 but failed to (i) put more money in Sinking Fund for credible buyback or swap/exchange (as w/ 1st Bond); (ii) messed PRG with PDS saga (blame MCC too for exit?). 6th we messed up using ESLA to pay IPPs; and yet 7th kept borrowing with no repmt plan.”

He asked them to strengthen their faith in God in these times of difficulty.

Sachet water producers in Upper East Region fight over pricing

The executive members of the Sachet Water Producers Association in the Upper East Region are at each other’s throats over their failure to follow the agreed price tag in selling their products.

They say some of their members are undercutting the prices and selling a bag of sachet water at GHS5.00 instead of the agreed price of GHS8.00.

They described the situation as unfortunate and borne out of greed and selfishness.

Secretary of the Association, Moses Nsoh, raised these concerns about the attitude of members while speaking to Class 91.3 FM’s regional reporter, Moses Apiah, via the phone.

“As regional leaders, we had a meeting and agreed not to go by the national figure (GHS10) in order not to overburden the consumers in the region.

“So, we decided to keep our retail price at GHS8.00. This was to enable consumers to buy a unit for 50 pesewas,” Moses Nsoh said.

He charged that the producers who are engaged in the undercutting are bent on taking over other producers’ customers.

This, he said, is not good for competitive selling.

He was worried this may compromise the quality of water produced in the region

COCOBOD trial: Step down – Opuni to retired Justice Honyenuga

Lawyers of the former Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni have filed an application asking Justice Clemence Honyenuga, who has attained the retirement age of 70 to step down from his case.

Justice Honyenuga, a Justice of the Supreme Court sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court judge, attained the age of 70 on September 4, this year, but has been granted a six months extension by the Chief Justice to wrap up the trial as per the law, a development Dr. Opuni and his lawyers have raised concerns with.

The Supreme Court judge has been presiding over the case in which Dr. Opuni and two others are standing trial for allegedly causing financial loss to the state to the tune of GHc271 million in the alleged fraudulent procurement of Lithovite Liquid Fertilizer.

In court on Monday, November 7, 2022, when the case was called, lawyers of Dr. Opuni led by Lawyer Samuel Codjoe indicated to the court about the latest application.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, said even though a copy of the said application was shown to her, the prosecution has not been served.

Justice Honyenuga after listening to the parties adjourned the case to November 14, 2022.

According to EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent Murtala Inusah, Dr. Opuni who was a subject matter of a six-weeks excuse duty following an eye surgery was present in court.

Dr. Opuni and Businessman Seidu Agongo, the Chief Executive Officer of Agricult Ghana Limited all pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been granted bail. So far, the prosecution had closed its case after calling seven witnesses with the seventh Defence witness for Dr. Opuni currently in the witness box.

Surgery

On October 17, a Medical Director of St. Lucy Eye Clinic, Dr. Kodjo Abalo provided justification for the six weeks excuse duty granted to Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, who had had some eye surgeries saying, “Six weeks is crucial in the healing process of the eye.”

Dr Abalo, was on October 11, 2022 summoned by the Criminal Division of the Accra High to explain to the court the circumstances leading to his excuse duty to Dr. Opuni who is said to have had eye surgery.

When the trial resumed on October 11, after a two-month legal vacation, lawyers of Dr Opuni led by Samuel Codjoe informed the court about Dr. Opuni’s ill health, but the doctor was summoned by the court presided over by Justice Clemence Honyenuga, a Justice of the Supreme Court sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court judge.

Testimony

In Court on Monday, October 17, Dr. Kodjo Abalo, the Medical Director of St Lucy Eye Clinic told the court that Dr. Opuni is his patient, who came to the facility on a referral basis but not as a walk-in patient.

He said Dr. Opuni came to the facility on May 21, 2022, with a referral letter and a printout of the optical Coherence, and that after examination, the only treatment was for the facility to operate on the eye.

According to him, Dr. Opuni came back after recovering from Covid-19 on Sept 9, 2022, ready for the operation, and after the pre-operative was done, the operation was done on September 23, 2022.

Both NDC & NPP have rejected Ofori Atta – Dr. Duffuor jabs

0

Former finance minister and NDC 2024 Presidential hopeful, Dr Kwabena Duffuor has said the current finance minister Ken Ofori Atta is in an untenable position, with both the ruling NPP and opposition NDC rejecting him as finance minister.

In an interview with Kasapa FM, the former governor of the bank of Ghana said the finance minister must leave office of his own volition.

“He [finance minister] has been rejected by both sides. His own NPP party has rejected him and we in the NDC don’t want him. If I were him, I would go already”.

NPP MPs last week in a press conference called on President Nana Akufo Addo to dismiss Ken Ofori Atta as finance minister. They threatened to boycott government business in parliament in protest against inaction from the President. They later backtracked after a meeting with the President.

Civil society groups and opposition parties earlier called for the removal of the finance minister as inflation skyrocketed, amidst historic levels of local currency depreciation against the US dollar, with Ghana at the brink of debt default.

Dr Duffuor, who formally announced his 2024 Presidential bid this week said Ken Ofori Atta should not wait to be sacked but should rather do the most honourable thing by resigning from his position to reduce the uncertainty that his continued stay in office creates for the economy in general.

President Akufo Addo has however insisted that the finance minister Ken Ofori Atta, who is also his cousin, is one of his best-performing aides despite admitting that Ghana is in economic crisis.

NDC needs radicalism, aggressiveness to return to power – Mustapha Gbande

A security analyst and a National Democratic Congress deputy General Secretary aspirant Mustapha Gbande has called on the party to define its clear lines of engagement with the governing New Patriotic Party by going all out ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to him, gentility alone will not bring NDC back to power stressing that there is the need to employ some level of radicalism and aggression to stand firm against any strong force from their opponents.

“We are living in times where the NPP is not seeing us as brothers but as enemies and we need to confront them head on. We need some level of radicalism and aggression to bring back the party into power, if you vote for gentle people we will get gentle results but gentility alone can’t win elections”.
The vociferous, Strategic and Radical Operative of the party strongly believed that, strategic security system must be established to get the NDC well positioned ahead of election 2024.

Interacting with delegates in Wa, regional capital of the Upper West Region on Sunday, October 6, 2022, Mr. Gbande appealed to members of the umbrella family to give him their mandate to effect the needed strategic changes and improve upon the security needs of the party at all levels that will ensure the party gets victory come 2024.

He underscored the need for the NDC to pay much attention to the security needs of the party stressing that, no room must be given to the NPP to take advantage of the NDC.

The Tactical Operative of the NDC also hinted of training the party internal men and women to become fearless and firm and can withstand any amount of intimidation that is likely to come from their opponents.

The delegates on their part charged the aspirant to walk his talk when given the nod. “I am highly touched by your message and I believe that you are the right person the party has been yearning for. Your presence has reignited the vigor in us and I am assuring you of my vote come December” Andaban Danis a delegate of the Daffiama Bussie Issa constituency.

“Your presence has given us the assurance that the NDC still have the men to guide the strong room, it was very painful to us here after we have guided and ensure the right thing was done here only to hear that some two individuals at the strong room made our toil fruitless. We are strongly behind you and we will support you to achieve your aim and do the needful for the NDC to come back to power come 2024” Suff stated.

Ken Ofori-Atta must resign- Duffuor

A former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor wants the current Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to resign from his position following calls for his removal.

He said the wave of public anger against the Minister is strong and must stand down immediately for somebody else to take over the office.

“It’s quite unfortunate but I don’t understand why he should continue to occupy that position when the two sides including both the majority and the minority have rejected him. There is no point in staying on as a Minister when your own people are calling for your head. The best thing for him is to walk away now,” the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana(BoG) said on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5 Fm.

Parliament will on Thursday, November 10, 2022, begin the debate on the motion of censure filed by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, for the removal of the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Presenting the Business Statement for the week on the floor of Parliament last Friday, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said Ofori-Atta’s removal remained a key feature for the week.

Reports say the whole NPP caucus in parliament now supports calls for the Finance Minister to resign or be sacked.

“Even though the issue started with a group of 80-plus, the caucus meeting aligned with the decision of that group.”

“So it is no longer the cause of the 80-plus group. It is the agenda for the entire caucus,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told journalists in Parliament.
