Celebrating A Century and Two Decades of Academic Excellence
As educational institutions across the country adapt to a rapidly changing technological landscape, historical pillars of learning continue to evaluate their contributions to national development. Suame Methodist Junior High School (JHS) recently marked its milestone 120th anniversary with a profound call to prioritize STEM education Ghana initiatives to secure the future of its students in the Ashanti Region.
Founded over a century ago, the school has nurtured generations of leaders, professionals, and artisans who have contributed immensely to the socio-economic fabric of Kumasi and the wider Ghanaian state. However, as the institution reflects on its rich history, current leadership and education stakeholders have shifted their focus toward modernizing the academic curriculum to meet 21st-century global standards.
The Critical Need for STEM Innovation in Basic Schools
During the grand anniversary celebrations held in Kumasi, distinguished guests, alumni, and educational authorities emphasized that foundational education must pivot strongly toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Speakers noted that relying solely on traditional theoretical teaching methods is no longer sufficient in a world driven by digital transformation and industrial automation.
Education advocates argue that introducing students to practical coding, robotics, and basic laboratory experimentation at the basic school level builds critical problem-solving skills. By transforming institutions like Suame Methodist JHS into modern technological hubs, Ghana can bridge the digital divide and prepare young learners for the future job market.
Alumni and Community Support
The 120th-anniversary event also served as a rallying point for the school’s old student association. Past students stepped forward to pledge financial and infrastructural support, aiming to construct a fully equipped computer laboratory and science resource center. Community leaders present at the ceremony commended the Methodist Church Ghana for sustaining the institution through decades of socio-political shifts, maintaining high moral standards alongside academic rigor.
Local government representatives and educational directors pledged to collaborate with corporate partners to ensure that basic schools in urban and peri-urban areas receive the necessary tools to implement effective STEM innovation frameworks. The celebration concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing dedicated teachers, past headmasters, and outstanding students who continue to fly the school’s flag high.
