Revitalizing Heritage Tourism in the Kwahu Ridge
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the state-of-the-art Stone Age Park in Abetifi, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Valued at GH¢4.5 million, the landmark project is designed to position Abetifi and the broader Kwahu Ridge as a premier destination for eco-tourism, archaeological exploration, and cultural heritage preservation in West Africa.
Speaking at the grand inauguration ceremony, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the critical importance of leveraging Ghana’s rich historical assets to drive local economic development and create sustainable employment opportunities for the youth. The establishment of the Stone Age Park is expected to draw local and international researchers, historians, and vacationers keen on exploring Ghana’s prehistoric past.
Unlocking Economic Potential Through the Stone Age Park
The Stone Age Park project incorporates modern visitor facilities, interpretive exhibition centers detailing ancient human habitation in the Kwahu enclave, and secured pathways leading to ancient rock shelters. Local chiefs and tourism industry players have lauded the initiative, noting that it will significantly increase tourist traffic beyond the traditional Easter festivities that the Kwahu area is globally renowned for.
Analyst projections indicate that the influx of visitors will spur growth in local hospitality businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and artisanal crafts. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority, has pledged to provide continuous promotional support to ensure the park achieves optimal international visibility.
Preserving Ghanaian History for Future Generations
Beyond its economic appeal, the Stone Age Park serves as an educational hub. Schools and academic institutions across the country are expected to incorporate field trips to the Abetifi site into their history and social studies curricula. By safeguarding these archaeological treasures, the government aims to foster a deeper sense of national identity and historical appreciation among the younger generation.
