Rev Kwadwo Bempah, Senior Pastor of Holy Hill Chapel, Assemblies of God, has issued a stark warning to the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, led by President-elect John Mahama, to concentrate on economic recovery rather than pursuing officials accused of corruption from the previous administration.
In his sermon delivered on Sunday, December 22, 2024, Rev. Bempah emphasized that the primary concern of Ghanaians is economic stability rather than the prosecution of corrupt officials. “We voted them out because they wanted to make people poor. If the next government also tries it… I am not a politician or a member of any party. But anybody whose leadership does not end up with the well-being of the people will wake up and laugh at the wrong side of their mouth,” he stated, highlighting the public’s frustration with economic hardships.
His remarks come in the wake of President-elect Mahama’s announcement of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, which aims to reclaim state funds allegedly misappropriated during the tenure of the outgoing Akufo-Addo government. The initiative is spearheaded by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu.
Rev. Bempah critiqued the focus on anti-corruption efforts, saying, “I have seen the new people also making ‘Let’s catch people’ efforts. My friend, take your time. We didn’t vote for you to be catching people. We want the economy well. That is why you said you want to come to power. Catching somebody will not bring money into my pocket, so stay focused. Catching people is not our business. Bring the dollar down; you said you will do it; do it now.”
This call to action underscores a broader sentiment among Ghanaians who are grappling with the rising cost of living and a depreciating cedi. The pastor’s advice reflects a desire for tangible economic benefits over the moral satisfaction of seeing justice served in corruption cases.
As the NDC prepares to take office on January 7, 2025, the balance between addressing corruption and reviving the economy will be a critical test for the new administration, with voices like Rev. Bempah urging a focus on immediate economic relief for the populace.
