Montgomery County Firefighter Chris Higgins Fondly Remembered After Line-of-Duty Death

In a tragic turn of events, Master Firefighter Christopher Higgins from Montgomery County, Maryland, USA, lost his life while battling a house fire in the neighboring Prince George’s County. The incident occurred on January 11, 2025, around 5 p.m. on Bradford Drive.

Higgins, commonly known as Chris among his colleagues, was part of a mutual aid response when he suddenly suffered a medical emergency during the firefight. Despite immediate CPR administered by fellow firefighters at the scene, Higgins was transported to Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center, where he succumbed to his condition.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Corey Smedley initially withheld Higgins’ identity to allow for family notifications but was later confirmed by firefighter Eric Campbell via a tribute post on Instagram.

Chris Higgins, a 22-year veteran of the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service, was a well-respected figure in the community. His sudden departure has left behind a grieving family, including his wife and two children.

Tributes have poured in from across the firefighting community. Queen Anne’s County First Alert posted, “Please Keep Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service In Your Thoughts & Prayers Tonight As They Deal With Their Line Of Duty Death Of Master Firefighter Christopher Higgins, Who Leaves Behind A Wife & 2 Children. Rest Easy Brother Chris.”

Another heartfelt tribute came from fellow firefighter Melvin Thomas, who shared, “I’ve heard it said that God only takes the good ones. Well, he certainly took a good one from us today. For those that never got the chance to meet Chris Higgins, you missed out.”

The firefighting community and beyond mourn the loss of Higgins, whose dedication and service will be remembered by many. His legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the risks first responders take daily to ensure public safety.
