Devastation in the Eastern Region’s Commercial Center

Traders at the Koforidua central business district are counting heavy financial losses following a midnight inferno that gutted multiple shops and left valuable goods reduced to ashes. The Koforidua market fire has once again brought the critical issue of commercial fire safety to the forefront of national discourse in Ghana.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the fire started late in the evening, quickly spreading across closely packed wooden and concrete structures before emergency responders could arrive. The swift movement of the flames was reportedly fueled by the combustible nature of the goods sold in the affected section, which included clothing, plastics, and household provisions.

GNFS Response and Investigation

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) stationed in the Eastern Region were deployed to the scene to battle the raging blaze. While fire officers successfully prevented the fire from engulfing the entire commercial enclave, their efforts were initially hampered by poor accessibility routes within the market.

Speaking on the ongoing operations, regional fire authorities noted that preliminary investigations have begun to ascertain the actual cause of the outbreak. Electrical fault is heavily suspected, though official confirmation is pending a comprehensive forensic assessment by safety inspectors.

Calls for Enhanced Market Safety Measures

The latest incident has triggered widespread concern among local authorities and market unions regarding safety protocols across major trading hubs in Ghana. Business owners are renewing calls for the municipal assembly to install dedicated fire hydrants, improve internal access roads for emergency vehicles, and conduct regular electrical audits to prevent similar tragedies.

Local leadership has assured affected traders of support as investigations continue, while emphasizing the urgent need for a collective approach to safeguarding commercial infrastructure across the Eastern Region.
