In protest over cost-of-living allowances, teacher unions declare indefinite strike

Date:

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, and the Ghana National Association of Teachers have started a statewide strike action as of today, Monday, June 4, 2021.

The failure of the government to accede to the teacher unions’ demand for a 20 percent cost-of-living allowance, according to their leadership, is the cause of the strike.

Given the current situation, we are obligated to openly inform Ghanaians of our plan to strike after the June 30, 2022 deadline we set for the government to pay our cost-of-living allowance has passed. As a result, we have made the decision to start a strike, which will begin today, Monday, July 4, 2022.

“By this, we are informing the general public that, we are withdrawing all our services in all the Pre-tertiary educational space. (Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff),” the group stated in a press release.

The teacher unions claim in their release that their request for a COLA has been affected by rising inflation, which has resulted in an ongoing increase in the cost of fuel, products, and services.

The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Tanko Musah, confirmed the teacher unions’ strike action to CountryGhana.

The walkout adds to the strain on Ghana’s government, which has been coping with a crisis that is only getting worse.

On Friday, June 1, 2022, the government stated that it has decided to ask the IMF for a bailout in order to lessen the country’s current economic problems..
