Advancing Higher Education in Ghana

In a landmark development for tertiary education in the country, the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ)—now operating under the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC)—is rolling out plans to introduce Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. This strategic expansion aims to bridge the gap in advanced media research and elevate the standard of strategic communication and journalism scholarship across West Africa.

For decades, GIJ has stood as the premier institution for training media practitioners, public relations professionals, and broadcast journalists in Ghana. However, the absence of terminal degree options previously forced many local media academics and professionals to seek advanced education abroad or pivot to traditional universities for their doctoral studies. The new GIJ postgrad programmes seek to reverse this trend by offering specialized, locally grounded academic tracks.

Meeting the Demands of Modern Media Research

Speaking on the institutional growth, academic leadership emphasized that the introduction of these graduate research degrees is timely. With the rapid evolution of digital media, artificial intelligence in journalism, and the complex socio-political dynamics of African media systems, rigorous localized research has never been more critical.

  • Deepening Academic Rigor: The MPhil and PhD structures will focus heavily on empirical research tackling African-centric communication challenges.
  • Faculty Development: The initiative will help build a robust pool of homegrown PhD holders to lecture in expanding media departments nationwide.
  • Industry Synergy: Research outputs will directly inform media policy, regulatory frameworks, and ethical standards within Ghana’s vibrant broadcasting and digital spaces.

Accreditation and Implementation Timeline

Institutional stakeholders are currently finalizing curriculum reviews and securing institutional accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). While official admission dates have not been formally gazetted, university authorities anticipate admitting the inaugural cohort of doctoral and MPhil candidates in the upcoming academic year.

Prospective applicants, including seasoned industry practitioners and academic researchers, are advised to monitor official UniMAC communication channels for specific entry requirements, application deadlines, and scholarship opportunities aimed at supporting exceptional postgraduate candidates.
