Ghana Police Arrest Former Boxer Ayitey Powers Over Alleged Death Threat to Sports Chief

Accra, 24 August 2026 — The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” a 46-year-old former professional boxer, in connection with an alleged death threat made against Yaw Ampofo, Director-General of the National Sports Authority.

According to a police press release issued on Monday, the arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media in which the suspect is alleged to have issued the threat. The incident is reported to have occurred on 24 August 2026.

Okai is currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The Accra Regional Police Command said probes are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

The police urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information about the matter while investigations continue.

The statement was signed by Ms. Juliana Obeng, Chief Superintendent and Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region.
