Bill O’Brien, officially known as William James O’Brien, is an American football coach born on 23 October 1969 to Anne Murphy O’Brien and John O’Brien.

He developed a love for American football at an early age and played Little League as a child. Bill was educated at St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers and after graduation he attended Brown University where he played defensive end and linebacker for the Brown Bears from 1990 to 1992.

He began his coaching career at Brown in 1993 before spending more than a decade coaching in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2007, Bill joined the New England Patriots as their quarterback coach, and in 2011, he became their offense coordinator.

In 2012, he was hired by Penn State to take over a programme that had just endured the Penn State child sex abuse scandal. In his first season as head coach, he led the team to an 8-4 record and won ESPN’s National Coach of the Year award.

After the 2012 season, he was heavily linked with a return to the National Football League (NFL) as a head coach, interviewing with both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Browns.

Bill O’Brien decided to stay at Penn State and left after his second season to become head coach of the Texans. He was the head coach of Pennsylvania State University from 2012 to 2013 and of the Houston Texans from 2014 to 2020.

Bill O’Brien has risen through the ranks to become one of the most sought-after coaches in the National Football League. He is currently the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots.
