Achimota Neoplan Fire Disrupts Morning Commute

Commuters plying the Achimota route experienced severe delays following a sudden vehicular fire that gutted a commercial taxi cab near the Achimota Neoplan enclave in Accra. The incident, which occurred during peak morning rush hours, drew a large crowd of onlookers and brought vehicular movement along the stretch to a temporary halt.

According to eyewitness accounts on the ground, thick plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky as the fire rapidly consumed the front portion of the vehicle. Drivers and passengers abandoned nearby commercial buses, locally known as trotros, as anxiety mounted over the potential of a fuel tank explosion.

GNFS Response and Traffic Management

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were quickly dispatched to the scene following distress calls from stranded motorists and local traders. Firefighters deployed water hoses to douse the raging flames, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to nearby structures or other vehicles stalled in the traffic buildup.

Personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service also arrived promptly to direct traffic and clear the bottleneck. Commuters heading toward Achimota, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and surrounding commercial hubs faced extended delays as authorities worked to tow the charred wreckage off the main road.

Vehicle Safety and Maintenance Concerns in Accra

While preliminary investigations into the cause of the Achimota Neoplan fire are still underway by the GNFS, transport safety advocates have renewed calls for stringent vehicle inspections across the capital. Electrical faults and poor fuel line maintenance are frequently cited as leading causes of sudden vehicular fires on major Ghanaian roads.

Transport unions and commercial drivers operating within the Greater Accra Region are being urged to prioritize routine vehicular servicing to safeguard passengers and prevent similar hazardous incidents on national highways.
