Accra Turf War: Historic Racecourse Faces Demolition Threat Ahead of West African Derby

Date:

ACCRA — Tension is mounting at the historic Accra Turf Club as racing authorities and local traditional leaders lock horns over a looming municipal redevelopment order. With the prestigious West African Turf Championship just six weeks away, the future of Ghana’s premier equestrian venue hangs in the balance.

Municipal planners have served notice to clear the century-old stables to pave the way for a modern commercial terminal, citing urban zoning updates. However, the Ghana Racing Association vehemently opposes the timeline, arguing that displacing the region’s top thoroughbreds during peak training season will devastate the nation’s standing in international equestrian circles.

Jockeys and trainers from across the sub-region, including contingents from Nigeria and Senegal, have already begun arriving for the preliminary heats. Stable owners report a climate of deep uncertainty as heavy machinery sits stationed near the perimeter fences, awaiting the expiration of a 72-hour injunction filed by sports advocates.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has stepped in to mediate emergency talks between the municipal assembly and racing stakeholders. A compromise involving a phased relocation after the championship is currently on the table, but sports enthusiasts remain on high alert as the clock ticks down toward the region’s biggest sporting spectacle.
