Electoral Commission Announces Council of State Elections in Ghana

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced the schedule for the upcoming elections to elect Regional Representatives to the Council of State, as per Paragraph (C), Clause (2) of Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution. The elections are set to ensure the representation of each region in the Council of State, promoting a democratic process in governance.

According to the press release dated January 22, 2025, qualified individuals interested in standing for these elections are required to submit their Nomination Forms. Candidates must provide two copies of a recent bust-sized photograph against a red background, showing their full face and ears. These forms must be submitted to the Regional Director of their respective regions from January 28th to January 31st, 2025, between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.

Nominations for candidacy require the support of twenty registered voters from the region, with two registered voters proposing and seconding the nomination. The candidate must also consent to the nomination for election as a Member of the Council of State.

Completed Nomination Forms are to be delivered to the designated location by the Regional Director of the Electoral Commission within the specified time frame. Forms can be downloaded from the Electoral Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) and must be completed in triplicate.

The elections are scheduled to take place across all regional capitals on Tuesday, February 11th, 2025, with venues to be announced by the Commission.
