Accusations of bribery, high-level government involvement, and international intrigue—these are the elements that make up the Airbus Scandal, a case that has captured the attention of Ghanaians and the global community. Now, former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has stepped back into the spotlight, providing what he claims are new details about the scandal.

Background

The Airbus Scandal centers around allegations that the European aircraft manufacturer paid bribes in Ghana during the sale of three military aircraft. The company admitted to hiring the brother of a top elected Ghanaian official as its consultant during the pitch to sell the aircraft to the country. This revelation sent shockwaves through the political landscape, raising questions about corruption, accountability, and the role of high-ranking officials.

Amidu’s Investigation

Martin Amidu, who previously served as Attorney General and Minister for Justice, was tasked with investigating the scandal. In a recent statement, Amidu revealed that he had withheld certain details during his investigation in 2020. His reasons? The country was in an election year, and the sensitivity surrounding the identity of “Government Official 1” made him cautious.

Amidu’s new revelations include information about the role played by former President John Dramani Mahama and his brother, Samuel Adam Mahama Foster. According to Amidu, he secured evidence such as bank statements and statements from Samuel Adam Foster, showing his involvement in the scandal. Interestingly, Amidu chose not to invite former President Mahama for interrogation, fearing that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) would be seen as a political tool.

The Challenge

Amidu didn’t stop there. He challenged both Mahama and his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to reopen the investigation. His suggestion? Invite “Scotland Yard” to conduct an independent inquiry into the Airbus SE-Ghana scandal. Amidu’s message to Mahama and NDC: If you claim to be incorruptible, prove it by inviting external investigators to examine the case.

What’s Next?

As the 2024 elections approach, the Airbus Scandal remains a contentious issue. Ghanaians are watching closely, waiting to see if Amidu’s revelations will lead to further investigations or if the case will fade into the background. Amidu’s call for transparency and accountability resonates with citizens who want to see justice served.
