Afia Pokua, widely recognized as Vim Lady, has openly criticized both the media and the public for what she perceives as their role in enabling the controversial behaviors of Captain Smart, a notable Ghanaian journalist.
In a recent video statement, Vim Lady lambasted the public’s support and the media’s spotlight on Captain Smart for encouraging his unprofessional conduct. She argued that this support has given him an undue sense of entitlement, allowing him to exploit Ghana’s freedom of speech to verbally assault politicians and public figures, and potentially incite the youth towards various actions.
“The problem isn’t just him; it’s the media that gives him airtime and the public that hypes him up,” Vim Lady stated, pointing out how this “over-pampering” has led to Captain Smart pushing the boundaries of acceptable journalism under the pretext of accountability.
She also raised concerns about the implications of such behavior, warning that the lack of oversight by bodies like the National Media Commission could endanger national security, particularly when platforms are used to target individuals without factual basis or consideration of the consequences. “Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom to attack anyone without facts or regard for the implications,” Vim Lady clarified.
