UMass Lowell Student Dies by S*uc*de After Jumping from University Avenue Bridge

Lowell, Massachusetts (CNN) — A student from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) has tragically died by suicide after jumping off the University Avenue Bridge, casting a shadow over the campus community.

The incident occurred in the early hours when the student, whose identity has not been released by authorities, was seen jumping from the bridge that crosses the Merrimack River. Despite the immediate response from emergency services, the student could not be saved.

This is not the first time the bridge has been the site of such a tragedy. In 2006, Ronald Wetmore took his own life there, followed by another incident in 2017 at the nearby Richard P. Howe Bridge, highlighting a concerning pattern of events at this location.

UMass Lowell has a range of mental health support services in place, including the UMatter2 initiative, designed to support students through programs and resources aimed at mental wellness. However, this recent event has reignited discussions about the adequacy of current measures and the need for enhanced suicide prevention strategies on campus.

In the wake of the tragedy, UMass Lowell released a statement expressing profound sorrow and emphasizing the availability of counseling services. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and all students impacted by this heartbreaking loss. We encourage anyone in need to seek support,” the university said.

The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Lowell Police Department alongside the UMass Lowell Police, with a focus on maintaining respect for the privacy of the deceased and their family during this difficult time.

The tragedy has prompted calls for action, including the installation of physical barriers or increased monitoring at the bridge, and a broader discussion on enhancing mental health support for students. There’s a push for more proactive measures to prevent such incidents, advocating for better awareness, resources, and direct intervention strategies.
