Two Sentenced to Three Months in Prison for Illegal Dumping at Accra Post Office

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced two individuals, Albert Okai and Amoako Darko, to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor for illegally dumping refuse in the vicinity of the Accra Central Post Office.

The convicts pleaded guilty to violating Section 24 of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Bye-Laws, which prohibits unauthorized waste disposal in public areas. The offense occurred on August 20, 2025, when the two were caught by AMA environmental officers dumping sacks of mixed waste, including plastics and food scraps, near the post office on Liberia Road, causing obstruction and health concerns.

Prosecutor Inspector Samuel Kofi Mensah presented evidence that the illegal dumping disrupted pedestrian access and posed sanitation risks in the busy commercial area. In addition to the jail term, each convict was fined 50 penalty units (GH¢600). Both Okai and Darko failed to pay the fine, resulting in their transfer to Nsawam Medium Security Prison to serve the full sentence.

Magistrate Felicia Adjei, presiding over the case, stressed the importance of upholding sanitation laws to maintain Accra’s cleanliness. “Public spaces like the post office are not dumping grounds. Such acts will face strict penalties,” she declared.

The AMA has since cleared the site and reiterated its commitment to combating illegal dumping through increased patrols and public awareness campaigns. Residents are encouraged to report violations to the AMA hotline at 0302-221-111 or use designated waste collection services to avoid similar consequences.
