During the 2023 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, former flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong expressed his bitterness towards several individuals, including former and current MPs, whom he felt betrayed him. Agyapong claimed that these individuals, whom he had previously helped, turned against him during his presidential bid and even insulted him. He vowed never to forgive most of these MPs.

In an interview on Starr FM on October 5, 2023, Agyapong shared his mixed feelings, stating, “I am very bitter that if I had not contested, I wouldn’t have known my enemies, these MPs, the help that I have given them.” While he has forgiven some MPs, there are others he can never forgive due to their betrayal. Here are three MPs Kennedy vowed never to forgive:

Alfred Obeng-Boateng, MP for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai

Agyapong singled out Alfred Obeng-Boateng, the Member of Parliament for the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai constituency. He claimed that despite campaigning for Obeng-Boateng to secure his parliamentary seat, the MP turned against him during his presidential bid. Agyapong expressed his frustration, stating, “I campaigned for him in Bibiani; I am not afraid of him, Alfred Obeng. I left his place at 1:00 a.m…and for this man to tell me that I don’t know how to talk. I can never forgive that guy.”

Obeng-Boateng lost his seat to Bright Asamoah Brefo of the NDC in the 2024 elections, with 31,749 votes to Brefo’s 33,732 votes.

Mavis Hawa Koomson, MP for Awutu Senya East

Kennedy Agyapong also disclosed that he would not forgive Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and the Fisheries Minister. He stated that Koomson disrespected him in front of his wife, which he does not intend to forgive. “My wife was in K.T. Hammond’s office when Hawa Koomson told me that if I’m mad, she will show me that she’s also mad. I will show the NPP that I’m madder than all of them,” he said.

Koomson lost her seat to Phillis Naa Koryor of the NDC in the 2024 elections, with 45,638 votes to Koryor’s 50,886 votes.

Henry Quartey, MP for Ayawaso Central

Agyapong accused Henry Quartey, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central, of insulting him by labeling him a violent person. “Sometimes I forgive my colleagues MPs because if they don’t toe the line, they will not get any opportunity again, so I forgive them, but those who insult me like Henry Quartey, he goes out there and insults me, saying, ‘Look at your violent friend,’ what! A good friend of mine,” he said.

Quartey lost his seat to Abdul-Rauf Tubazu of the NDC in the 2024 elections, with 23,345 votes to Tubazu’s 29,755 votes.

Kennedy Agyapong’s vow of unforgiveness highlights the deep personal and political rifts within the NPP following the 2023 presidential primaries.
