Hassan Mgaya, a Tanzanian professional boxer, tragically passed away on December 30, 2024, following a knockout in a lightweight bout against Paul Elias at Dunia Ndogo Hall in Tandale, Dar es Salaam on December 27. The incident leading to his death began when Mgaya was knocked out during the fifth round of the match.

After the knockout, Mgaya initially received first aid but his health deteriorated. He was first taken to Palestina Hospital in Sinza, then transferred to Mwananyamala Hospital, where his condition further worsened. He was subsequently referred to Muhimbili National Hospital but succumbed to his injuries en route.

Nsajigwa Mwangamilo, the Acting Secretary General of the Tanzania Professional Boxing Regulatory Commission (TPBRC), confirmed the news and announced that Mgaya’s burial would take place on January 1, 2025, in Vingunguti, Dar es Salaam. He expressed his condolences to Mgaya’s family and the boxing community, stating that the match was organized by a promoter who followed all necessary regulations.

Cosmas Cheka, the Treasurer of the Boxers’ Association, detailed that Mgaya’s death was likely due to the severe head punches he received, leading to him collapsing and biting his tongue, which then sank into his throat. This critical condition ultimately led to his demise.

This incident marks the second time in recent months that a Tanzanian boxer has died following a boxing match, highlighting ongoing concerns about the safety and medical oversight in professional boxing events in the country.
