Press Statement on Escalation of Cholera Outbreak in Ghana .The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has reported a significant escalation in the cholera outbreak across parts of the country. Since the initial outbreak in August 2024, which was initially declared over in September, a resurgence in October has led to 265 confirmed cases and 32 deaths.

The outbreak has particularly surged in the Western Region, with health facilities and communities under strain due to the increasing number of cases. The GMA has warned that the situation could deteriorate further during the festive season if immediate action is not taken to curb the spread.

The GMA is urging the government to intensify efforts against the cholera surge by ensuring the availability of potable water, medications, and necessary medical supplies in the affected regions. Additionally, local assemblies are encouraged to enforce sanitation regulations, focusing on food hygiene and waste management, to prevent further spread.

The association also calls for collaboration with media and other stakeholders to raise public awareness on cholera prevention measures. The public is advised to adopt rigorous personal hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing with soap, and to consume well-cooked food and clean water, particularly during the upcoming festive period. Vaccination in hotspots is also recommended.

This statement was jointly signed by Dr. Frank Serebour, President of the GMA, and Dr. Selorm Kutsotai, Assistant General Secretary, emphasizing the urgency and collective responsibility needed to address this public health crisis.
