President Mahama Extends IGP Yohuno’s Tenure by Two Years 2

President John Dramani Mahama has approved a recommendation from the Police Council to extend the contract of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno for an additional two years.

The decision allows the current IGP, who was due to retire next month upon reaching the compulsory retirement age, to remain in office until December 2027.

A statement from the Presidency confirmed that the Police Council, the constitutionally mandated body responsible for advising on senior police appointments, formally proposed the extension, citing the need for continuity in leadership within the Ghana Police Service.

IGP Yohuno, who assumed the top position in 2023, has overseen several reforms within the service, including enhanced community policing initiatives and efforts to modernize operational capabilities.

The extension marks the second time in recent years that the tenure of an Inspector-General of Police has been prolonged beyond the statutory retirement age, following a similar decision made during the previous administration.

Police sources have welcomed the development, describing it as a vote of confidence in the current leadership’s efforts to maintain stability and professionalism within the service.

The Office of the President indicated that formal communication regarding the contract extension has been transmitted to the Ghana Police Service for immediate implementation.
