Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has destooled Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II, the Queen of Denyase Traditional Council, following allegations of violating the sacred great oath of the Ashanti kingdom through treacherous invocation.
The decision was made during the Asanteman Council meeting on October 14, 2024. The council members opposed Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II’s plea for clemency, emphasizing the importance of upholding the great oath. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated, “In safeguarding the Golden Stool and the great oath entrusted to me, I must ensure fidelity to our traditions.” He also mentioned that forgiving her would set a bad precedent, and that she couldn’t continue to sit on the throne after violating the oath. The controversy surrounding Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin II’s royal lineage began when Achiasebaapanin Nana Akua Afriyie challenged her royalty status, leading to a committee investigation.
The committee found that Denyasehemaa was not a royal and not related to Achiase, and she was subsequently fined four rams for counter-invoking the Great Oath in vain.
