Oppong Nkrumah: Attempts to Remove Chief Justice Were Politically Motivated 2

Ghana’s Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has asserted that efforts to remove the Chief Justice were premeditated and politically motivated, sparking intense debate over judicial independence.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Oppong Nkrumah argued that the move was not purely legal, but rather a calculated political strategy that had been publicly discussed long before it was officially initiated. He pointed to past remarks by former President John Mahama, suggesting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had long intended to reshape the judiciary by appointing more party-aligned judges.

He also highlighted criticisms of the Chief Justice and Supreme Court following the 2020 election petition, implying that these attacks were part of a broader attempt to discredit the judiciary.

Oppong Nkrumah warned that while legal frameworks are being used as justification, the real agenda behind the removal push is political. He urged Ghanaians to carefully assess the motives behind such actions, cautioning against any efforts that could undermine judicial independence in the country.
