Multiple sources have reported that Folorunsho Alakija, the 73-year-old Nigerian billionaire and founder of Famfa Oil, has gone blind following a harrowing near-air disaster. The incident, which occurred while she was traveling with her husband, Modupe Alakija, Chairman of Famfa Oil, is said to have triggered a severe health crisis that ultimately cost her her vision.
According to Sahara Reporters, the ordeal began when the couple experienced a near-mishap mid-flight. The stress of the event reportedly caused Alakija’s blood pressure to surge, damaging her eyesight. One source told the outlet, “She had a near air mishap with her husband on board, and her blood pressure shot up, affecting her eyes. She’d been struggling with vision problems for some time, but instead of seeking medical treatment, she turned to faith, starting a church. Now, she can’t see at all.”
Alakija’s spiritual journey has been a significant part of her life. In 2004, she began hosting a small fellowship in her home, which grew into the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International. On her 69th birthday, she was ordained as an apostle, marking a milestone in her religious leadership. Despite her recent health struggles, her legacy as a business titan remains intact. Forbes estimated her net worth at $1 billion in 2020, and in 2015, she ranked 87th on their list of the world’s most powerful women—one of only two African women recognized among Africa’s wealthiest individuals.
The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding her condition, with no official statement yet from Alakija or her family. For now, the Nigerian business community and her admirers worldwide are left hoping for her recovery as she navigates this challenging chapter.
