Mahama Claims Akufo-Addo Government Set “Trap” for His Administration

John Mahama, the President-elect of Ghana, has accused the outgoing administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo of intentionally handicapping his incoming government with overwhelming debts. Mahama suggests that these financial burdens could hinder the rapid implementation of his administration’s plans once in office.

Speaking to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama highlighted several areas where he claims the current government has left his incoming administration in a bind:

  • He noted that the government owes significant debts to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), with threats that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results could be withheld if these debts are not cleared.
  • Mahama also mentioned the financial strain on the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program, with schools awaiting payment from the government since 2021, as per a letter from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS).
  • He further pointed out the government’s $2 billion debt in the electricity sector, suggesting this could lead to power shortages, or “dumsor,” under his leadership, according to comments made by an NPP member.

Despite these challenges, Mahama remains optimistic about his administration’s future, stating, “This is because the NPP government has set a trap for us. But we shall not be caught in that trap; we will escape unscathed.” He invoked divine assistance, expressing faith that the same God who helped secure his electoral victory would guide his government through these obstacles to success. He urged for continued prayers for wisdom and strength to lead and improve Ghana for future generations, asserting, “All I will say is that it is finished; God has already done it.”
