Kuami Eugene Reacts to Cedi’s Rise, Playfully Appeals to Mahama

Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has sparked conversation with a humorous yet insightful reaction to the Ghanaian cedi’s rapid appreciation against the U.S. dollar.

The award-winning singer took to X (formerly Twitter) to jokingly plead with former President John Dramani Mahama to “slow down” the cedi’s rise, expressing mixed feelings about his dwindling dollar reserves.

“We beg Pres. @JDMahama to slow down small — my dollar reserves are all going to waste. I’m happy and sad at the same time,” Eugene wrote, blending humor with economic frustration.

Since April 1, the Ghana cedi has gained remarkable strength, moving from GH₵15 to $1 to approximately GH₵10 to $1. While this signals economic stabilization, it has drawn varied reactions from different groups, particularly Ghanaians in the diaspora and local investors with foreign-denominated savings.

Many individuals abroad have voiced concerns over the implications, explaining that a stronger cedi makes remittances and dollar-based transactions more expensive. Kuami Eugene’s post reflects the growing conversation around the impact of currency fluctuations on financial decisions.
