The tattoo world is mourning the loss of Jack Rudy, a legendary figure known as the ‘godfather of line black and gray tattooing.’ Rudy passed away peacefully in his sleep over the weekend, between late Saturday, January 25, and early Sunday, January 26, 2025, as confirmed by his close friend and fellow artist, Bob Tyrell. The cause of Rudy’s death has not been disclosed.

“Got woken up this morning with the terrible news. My buddy Jack Rudy passed away in his sleep. The tattoo community is heartbroken today,” Tyrell mourned on his social media. He further described Rudy as “one of the kindest, funniest humans I ever met. Truly one of a kind.”

The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from tattoo artists and enthusiasts worldwide, with many sharing their personal stories and appreciation for Rudy’s contributions to the art form. “Going to miss my buddy Jack Rudy,” wrote one artist on Instagram. “Thanks for all the great memories and laughs as we traveled the world for 50 years.”

Born in 1954, Rudy’s career began in the 1970s after his time in the Marines. He apprenticed at Goodtime Charlie’s Tatooland in East LA, where alongside Charlie Cartwright, he developed the distinctive black-and-gray style using a single needle, which became his signature. Rudy was renowned for his realistic portraits and the gritty, accurate depictions possible with his chosen technique.

Rudy was not only an artist but also held significant roles within the tattoo community; he was a former President of the American Tattoo Association and owned Tatooland in Anaheim, CA. Additionally, he was president of the Beatnik’s Car Club, known for its 50s-style hot rods and tattoo enthusiast membership.

His legacy in tattooing is profound, having shaped a subgenre that continues to influence artists today. The tattoo community will remember Jack Rudy not just for his artistic contributions but for his warmth and humor that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
