The nomination of Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong, the former CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), as the Paramount Chief of Offinso has been rejected by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The Asantehene claims that Dr. K.K. Sarpong’s nomination was unconstitutional since it did not follow the proper procedures.
He implied that the family heads who oversaw Dr. Sarpong’s nomination procedure lacked the authority to do so and that they also neglected to take into account some people who are entitled to the Offinso stool.
“Kofi Kodua Sarpong has had a successful life and has accomplished a lot. If he is the person whom the Offinso elders want, they should have approached me and informed me of their desire.
I have cancelled all the pleas of the family head (Atta Kwabena). Mother, I have cancelled the pleas he (the family head) brought to you because the family head himself does not have the right to come close to the stool and for that matter bring you pleas. There is a curse on him that he was to take off.
“That is why I was asking the elders why they will let someone with a curse on him lead their plea. That is the issue I have. I have cancelled the nomination process.
“I know that Kofi Konadu Sarpong is the person you want as chief if that is true came and tell me about it. I know that you have sat with him and have come to an agreement. But the person leading your plea does not have the right to do so now,” the Asantehene said in Twi at the Manhyia Palace in a video shared by Opemsuo Radio which was sighted by countryghana
He emphasized that he had canceled the entire nomination process and given the Offinso elders instructions to restart again.
Dr. K.K. Sarpong was overwhelmingly chosen by the Offinso Traditional Council in the Ashanti traditional territory to succeed the late Nana Awiafe Akenten III, the area’s Paramount Chief.
On Saturday, October 2, 2021, the Offinso Manhene passed away after being ill.
Through Akyeamehene Nana Kwaku Wiafe, the traditional area’s kingmakers appointed Dr. Sarpong as the New Paramount Chief for the Offinso Traditional Council on Friday, May 6, 2022, during a ceremony in Offinso.
