Government to Deploy New High-Capacity Buses Nationwide – Vice President 2

The government of Ghana has announced plans to introduce new high-occupancy buses across the country. Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang revealed that these high-capacity vehicles will be provided to support both public operators (such as Metro Mass Transit and Ayalolo) and private transport companies. The initiative aims to boost public transport services, reduce severe commuter congestion, shorten long queues at bus stops, and alleviate the daily hardships faced by passengers during rush hours.

Speaking during a working visit to the Ministry of Transport and engagements with transport unions like the GPRTU on January 16, 2026, the Vice President emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama has directed expedited support for fleet renewal and expansion. This forms part of broader efforts to modernize the transport sector, improve efficiency, affordability, safety, and restore public confidence.

The move addresses ongoing challenges including vehicle shortages, overcrowding, delays, and their impact on productivity and daily life. Additional steps include fast-tracking repairs for broken-down buses and urging operators to maintain fairness, respect, and accountability toward commuters. The deployment is expected in the medium term to significantly ease pressure on the existing system.
