Gloria Sarfo Fires Back at George Quaye Over UTV Comments on Ghana’s Movie Industry

Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has publicly called out media personality George Quaye for his remarks on UTV regarding her comments about the struggling state of Ghana’s film industry. The dispute, which has sparked heated discussions online, stems from Sarfo’s candid Instagram post on July 15, 2025, where she lamented the lack of progress in the Ghanaian movie sector, stating, “The movie industry is not progressing, and countless skilled individuals are being wasted due to a severe lack of opportunities and productions.”

Sarfo’s initial post highlighted the stark contrast between Ghana’s stagnant film industry and the thriving Nollywood scene in Nigeria, where she noted actors are engaged in back-to-back productions. Her remarks drew criticism from several industry figures, including Quaye, who on UTV argued that Sarfo’s claims were damaging and suggested the industry was not a waste of time. In response, Sarfo took to Instagram on July 20, 2025, to defend her stance, expressing frustration with pundits like Quaye who, she claims, insulted her character instead of addressing the industry’s issues. “Pundits sit on national television/radio to insult and demean my personality and brand!! So, I’ll borrow their word, hmmmmmmmm & let’s all pretend that it is all rosy publicly, and cry privately!!” she wrote.

In her rebuttal, Sarfo clarified that her comments were not for clout but stemmed from a genuine concern for the industry she has championed for years. “God knows I didn’t post that for clout chasing! I did not mean to demean anyone or my country!” she stated, emphasizing her disappointment with the lack of unity and support within the industry. She also pointed out the irony of critics, including younger talents she aimed to uplift, disrespecting her efforts.

Quaye’s UTV remarks, as shared in a post by @utvghana on X, urged Sarfo to be “measured” in her critique, asserting that the Ghanaian movie industry is not a waste of time. However, Sarfo’s supporters argue that her observations reflect a harsh reality: Ghanaian producers struggle to shoot even one film a year, leaving talents underutilized compared to Nigeria’s vibrant industry.

Sarfo concluded her response by announcing a shift in focus to her personal brand, as advised by loved ones, stating, “Until then, I wish everyone the best. Indeed, an industry not worth fighting for!! I rest my case!!” Her passionate defense has reignited conversations about the challenges facing Ghana’s film industry, with many calling for collective action to address the lack of opportunities and production.
