In a significant political development, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a prominent Ghanaian lawyer, social activist, and convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, has been summoned by the Appointments Committee of the Ghanaian Parliament. This summons follows serious allegations of bribery made by Barker-Vormawor against members of the committee.

Barker-Vormawor, known for his vocal criticism of government corruption and his role in organizing protests like #OccupyJulorbiHouse, claimed that members of the Appointments Committee were demanding money from ministerial nominees in exchange for their approval. This accusation has stirred a considerable amount of controversy, leading to a formal investigation by the committee.

Bernard Ahiafor, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has vehemently denied these allegations, stating, “Let me place on record that I am ever ready to submit myself to ORAL. Myself and the committee members did not demand money from any nominee before vetting and approval,” . In response to the allegations, Ahiafor has instructed the clerk of Parliament to summon Barker-Vormawor to substantiate his claims with evidence on January 29, 2025. Failure to comply could result in the committee invoking its authority under Article 103 of the Ghanaian Constitution and Standing Order 134 to take further action.

The invitation for Barker-Vormawor to appear before the committee comes at a time when political transparency and accountability are at the forefront of public discourse in Ghana. Barker-Vormawor’s activism, highlighted by his involvement in movements demanding good governance and his academic pursuits at the University of Cambridge, where he is currently a PhD student, has made him a figure of both support and contention within the country.

This incident brings to light the ongoing struggle against corruption within Ghanaian politics, a theme that resonates with international audiences familiar with similar challenges in their own political systems. The outcome of Barker-Vormawor’s appearance before the committee could have significant implications for political accountability in Ghana, potentially influencing public trust in governmental processes and the fight against corruption.
