In Ghana, a new tax has been imposed on winnings from lotteries, gambling, and other games of chance. Competition from both domestic and foreign competitors will be subject to the 10% tax on all winnings.
A 20% tax on revenue will also be levied against betting companies doing business in the nation.
Upon the implementation of this new tax, Ghanaians reacted in a variety of ways. While some have praised the decision as a way for the government to raise money, others have criticized it as placing another another burden on an already financially stressed populace.
With many Ghanaians turning to gambling to make quick money, the betting industry in Ghana has risen dramatically in recent years.
