In a remarkable act of solidarity, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have donated their one-month basic salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.
The initiative, aimed at supporting Ghanaians battling life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and chronic kidney failure, received a boost when Brigadier General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff, led Service Commanders in presenting the contribution.
During a courtesy call on Friday, May 16, 2025, Brigadier General Agyapong emphasized the importance of supporting the fund, noting that it will provide relief to many patients struggling with severe medical conditions.
“We are intrigued, and it is heartwarming to know that persons with conditions such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke, among many others, will equally benefit from this fund. That is why my military command and I have decided to contribute our one-month basic salary to the fund,” he stated.
Mahama Praises Armed Forces for Their Generosity
Receiving the donation, President John Dramani Mahama expressed deep appreciation for the Armed Forces’ commitment to national welfare, recognizing their patriotism and humanity beyond their primary duty of defending Ghana’s territorial integrity.
“It shows that aside from your primary responsibility of protecting our territorial boundaries and wielding weapons, you have a heart and soul beating in your chest. You have love for the country and love for the people you are protecting. On behalf of the people of Ghana, I thank you for this,” Mahama said.
The Mahama Cares initiative, launched by the President, aims to eliminate financial barriers to critical healthcare, ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to essential medical treatment.
The military’s donation marks a significant milestone in the fund’s development, reinforcing the commitment to addressing Ghana’s healthcare challenges.
