Free SHS is not being reviewed by GES – DG dismisses reportage

Director General of GES Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwaa

Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has denied a report regarding the Free Senior High School Program that was attributed to him.
He claims that the report’s headline is “misleading” and “does not reflect the significance of the topic.”

Prof. Opoku-Amankwa had agreed to an interview, which was used to compile the reports.

He contends that he was misreported, nevertheless.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the GES is not undertaking any review of the FSHS,” he wrote in a rejoinder on Friday, July 22.

“Any such review of the FSHS Policy is the sole prerogative of the President and the government.”

He clarified that the Service is just an agency that only implements government policies and programmes in pre-tertiary education.

“The Ghana Education Service is a government agency and does not formulate or initiate a review of policies.”

Prof. Opoku-Amankwa emphasized that the Free SHS Program “would not be harmed by the IMF program,” as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had informed students, prospective students, parents, and the entire nation.

“It is the commitment of GES under my direction to make sure that the goal of His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of delivering accessible, equitable, and high-quality free SHS education is completely implemented to the benefit of the good people of Ghana.”
