The Ghana Police Service has detained three individuals, including former Sunyani West MP Ignatius Baffour Awuah, following violent outbreaks during a football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC, which resulted in the tragic death of a fan on February 2, 2025.
The incident occurred in Nsoatre, where the match was being played, leading to one fatality amidst the chaos. The arrested individuals are Ignatius Baffour Awuah, once a Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, along with Agyemang Duah Owusu and Kyeremeh Joseph, all of whom are now in police custody assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Police searches at Agyemang Duah Owusu’s home revealed two dresses bearing what appeared to be bloodstains, alongside an MP 23 pistol equipped with 15 rounds of ammunition, escalating concerns about the premeditated nature of the violence.
Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has expressed his condolences to both the family of the deceased and the leadership of Asante Kotoko FC. He committed to a meticulous investigation, ensuring that those responsible would face justice.
In response to the gravity of the situation, a specialized team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters has been deployed to work alongside the Bono Regional Police Command to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the violent episode.
