On Sunday, December 15, 2024, in the morning, a tragic incident unfolded in Abease, along the Prang to Kintampo Road in the Bono East Region, involving Police Constable Kennedy Ofori Boateng. A group of mourners heading to a cemetery were stopped at a police checkpoint. An altercation began when a mourner allegedly insulted a female police officer, leading to the officer calling for backup.
Constable Kennedy Ofori Boateng was among the responding officers. The situation escalated as mourners attempted to disarm one of the police officers. In the chaos, while Kennedy tried to help his colleague, a gun was discharged, and Kennedy was shot in the abdomen. He was immediately taken to a nearby health center but succumbed to his injuries.
The family of Constable Kennedy has criticized the police response, noting that they were only informed late on Sunday night by an officer who misleadingly claimed the shooting was related to election violence. Since then, no official from the Ghana Police Service has visited the family, nor have they been allowed to see Kennedy’s body. The family is now demanding justice and a formal address from the police regarding this incident.
