DVLA CEO Warns Against Illegal Trade of DV Plates: ‘It’s Criminal’ 2

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has issued a stern warning regarding the illegal buying and selling of Defective Vehicle (DV) plates. He emphasized that these plates are exclusively meant for authorized car dealers and should only be used for a maximum of 14 days after a vehicle is cleared from the port.

According to Kotey, unauthorized individuals have been misusing DV plates, leading to concerns about fraud and non-compliance with vehicle registration laws. Reports indicate that approximately 3,000 DV plates go unaccounted for each month, raising alarms about illegal distribution and potential criminal activities.

In response to the growing issue, the DVLA plans to introduce a new verification system in 2026, aimed at authenticating all vehicle number plates in Ghana. This move is expected to curb the circulation of fake plates and enhance the integrity of vehicle registration processes.

Kotey urged vehicle owners to adhere to the legal registration requirements instead of relying on DV plates beyond their permitted usage period. He further stated that the police will begin cracking down on offenders to ensure compliance with vehicle registration laws.

As the DVLA tightens its regulations, motorists are advised to take caution and follow proper registration procedures to avoid legal consequences. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
