Desmond Davies, a graduate of Takoradi Technical Institute, has introduced an innovative ice storage solution designed to withstand the harsh coastal climate. His invention, the Kingsway Barrel Ice Refrigerator, aims to help coastal communities efficiently store ice blocks for fish preservation.
The oil tank-based ice-making device is uniquely rust-proof, addressing a critical challenge faced by traditional refrigerators in seaside areas where the salty air accelerates corrosion. Mr. Davies, who studied mechanical engineering, combined his classroom knowledge with practical field experience to develop the Kingsway Barrel Freezer.
According to Mr. Davies, the inspiration for his invention came from personal experience. “My mother’s fridge for selling ice blocks kept breaking down due to rust caused by the coastal weather,” he told the Ghana News Agency. “Each time I repaired it, the issue returned. That’s when I decided to create something that could endure these conditions.”
Observing that barrels were commonly used for water storage, he saw an opportunity to repurpose them into refrigerators. His freezer model is highly durable, capable of withstanding sea breeze conditions for up to a decade. The device features three wheels for stability and can accommodate six packs of sachet water, ensuring ample storage capacity.
Beyond his invention, Mr. Davies is committed to empowering young people through technical training. He has expressed his desire to train more youths in refrigeration technology and called on the government and charitable organizations to support apprenticeship programs that would create employment opportunities in Sekondi-Takoradi and beyond.
“When there are jobs and opportunities, no youth will be forced or willing to engage in any form of social vices,” he emphasized.
