(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Ghana has been ranked 111th in the just-released 2022 World Happiness Report, a UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network publication.

This indicates a drop by 16 places from the 95th position last year, 2021.

The ranking was based on variables such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and views of corruption, as well as other qualities that tend to lead to better happiness.

Although no African country was among the first 50 countries, Mauritius secured the 52nd position, dropping by only two places.

Ghana also trails Libya -86th position, Ivory Coast 88th position, South Africa 91st position, Gambia 93rd position Algeria 96th position, Liberia 97th position, Congo Brazzaville 99th position and Morocco 100th position.

However, neighbouring country Nigeria ranked behind Ghana in 118th place.

In 2021, the most populated African country fell by 57 places to rank 116th after they had ranked 59th in the 2020 Report.

Public debt stock rises above GH¢ 350 bn by Dec., 2021; more than 80% of GDP

Latest data released by the Bank of Ghana puts Ghana’s total public debt stock as at December, 2021, at US$ 58.6 billion or GH¢351.8 billion. The amount is equivalent to 80.1% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product, the highest level recorded in recent history.

In Cedi terms, the total debt stock increased by about GH¢7.3 billion from GH¢344.5 billion in November to the GH¢351.8 recorded in December. In Dollar terms however the debt increased by about US$400 million from the US$58.2 billion recorded in November to the US$58.6 billion recorded in December 2021.

A look at the data from the Central bank shows that year-on-year, from December 2020 to December 2021, the debt stock rose by about 20% from GH¢291.6 billion to GH¢351.8 or an addition of about GH¢ 60 billion within that 12 month period.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

A further breakdown of the debt numbers show that the component of debt secured locally rose by about 21% between the period of December 2020 to December 2021, from GH¢ 149.8 billion to GH¢ 181.8 billion.

The external component of the debt, in Cedi terms also rose by about 20% between the period of December 2020 to December 2021, from GH¢141.8 billion to GH¢170 billion. In dollar terms however, the increase in debt was about 14.5%, from US$24.7 billion in December 2020 to US$28.3 in December 2021.

The rise in public debt has led to concerns about debt sustainability and the ability of the country to access the International Capital Market for more support.

Ratings agency Fitch recently downgraded Ghana to B negative, with a negative outlook, following a pandemic-related surge in government debt, and uncertainty about the government’s ability to stabilize debt against a backdrop of tightening global financing conditions

Biden Blames Gas Prices, Inflation Spike On Vladimir Putin

President Joe Biden says that the inflation report shows Americans are feeling the impacts of the price hike brought on by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Today’s inflation report is a reminder that Americans’ budgets are being stretched by price increases and families are starting to feel the impacts of Putin’s price hike. A large contributor to inflation this month was an increase in gas and energy prices as markets reacted to Putin’s aggressive actions,” Biden said in a statement.

Consumer prices rose 0.8 percent in February and 7.9 percent over the last 12 months, according to data released Thursday by the Labor Department. Rising prices for gasoline, housing and food drove most of February’s inflation spike, the department said.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

“As I have said from the start, there will be costs at home as we impose crippling sanctions in response to Putin’s unprovoked war, but Americans can know this: The costs we are imposing on Putin and his cronies are far more devastating than the costs we are facing,” Biden said.

Earlier this week, Biden announced a ban on Russian oil and White House has sought to pin the blame for the high cost of gas on Putin since the announcement, increasingly arguing that the invasion is the cause.

The president on Thursday said he’s fighting to bring down prices, noting that the U.S. secured a release of 60 million barrels of oil from our strategic reserves last week.

He also argued that investments to manufacture more in the U.S., strengthen supply chains, promote competition, make sure companies offer fair prices and lowering the cost of prescription drugs and energy are steps that can help.

He touted that his administration reduced the deficit last year, which was the first reduction since 2015, and that the Congressional Budget Office predicts it will be cut more in 2022.

“Finally, I want to be clear: We can do all this, and reduce the huge federal budget deficit that I inherited from my predecessor. Earlier this week, we learned that after reducing the deficit last year – for the first time since 2015 – CBO reported that we are on track to cut the deficit this year by over $1 trillion – the largest one year reduction in the deficit in US history,” the president said.

He also touted that new unemployment claims are low and the number people on unemployment insurance is the lowest since 1970, calling Thursday’s economic data a “tale of two recoveries.”

Gov’t to check fuel prices,re open Borders and scrap Covid 19 charges at Kotoka

0

Government is taking steps to deal with the rampant fuel increment in the country, according to Ministry of Information they held a Cabinet retreat at the Peduase Lodge.

The Ministers of Energy and Finance have been tasked by government to find ways of addressing the escalating fuel prices in the country although it is global phenomena.

Another topic discussed was a concrete decision to raise capital in order to bring the economy back on track with injection of over $2 billion and to check the depreciation of the cedi.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The source whispered that government has decided to review existing protocols imposed on arriving passengers at the airport.

Government is considering scrapping COVID 19 test for vaccinated travelers especially the mandatory testing either before one boards an incoming flight or when one arrives at the Kotoka International Airport.

Also, Government has decided to reopen all land borders in the country. The borders which were closed to human traffic over 2 years ago following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana will be reopened based on some conditions which will be spelt out.

Reopening of the borders was as a result of a recommendation by the COVID-19 taskforce to the President and Cabinet as a whole following three months of studies and analysis of Covid-19 vaccination and infection trends in Ghana and neighbouring West African countries.

The President is expected to address the nation on some of the issues addressed at the retreat shortly.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo chaired the meeting which was aimed at finding solutions to the recent economic challenges confronting the nation.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The cabinet retreat was held from Thursday March 17 to Sunday, March 20, 2022.

Government is optimistic that some of the decisions taken will go a long way to address the continuous depreciation of the cedi, stabilize the economy and the recent increments in fuel prices as well as reduce burden on Ghanaians.

The meeting was attended by Majority Caucus in Parliament, ministers, government appointees, and the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, one of the issues which was not tabled before the deliberation was government going to the International Monetary Fund for bailout as government was hopeful that the passage of the Electronic Transaction Levy commonly called E-levy which has been tabled before Parliament will help deal with the majority of the problems confronting the economy.

BBNaija’s Sammie Berates A Twitter User For Saying Davido Is Nurturing Isreal DMW For The Next Sacrifice

BBNaija reality show star Sammie has berated a Twitter user for saying Davido is nurturing Isreal DMW for the next sacrifice while he continues to deny his alleged son Dawson.

Some very close pals of Davido are dead and seeing how close he’s bringing Isreal DMW to himself made this Twitter user claim he’s gradually nurturing him for the next sacrifice and is still denying his alleged son Dawson.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

BBNaija’s Sammie reacting to the berated the Twitter user saying it’s evil and laterally needs to stop saying if God or whatever the tweep believes in hoarding his/her blessings he/she shouldn’t be surprised because he/she used the fingers to abuse his/her grace.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

According to Sammie, it really doesn’t end at retweets, comments, and likes as there’s more to life moreover, Twitter is just an app you can log off and it wasn’t created for trolls and for making people feel bad.

Sammie is right with the fact that we block our own blessings with what we say or write about others and taking this comment, for instance, it has no base, and neither can the tweep prove that Davido has been using people for sacrifice.
