Health authorities in the Western Region say stringent measures have been put in place to control the outbreak of Avian influenza in the region.
This comes after over 10,000 infected birds were destroyed.
There has been a spread of the bird flu in some parts of the country, including the Bono Region, where farms with over 9,000 birds were depopulated.
Officials in the Western Region say, they are not taking any chances, and have assured that the Regional Minister, together with the appropriate authorities, are working to contain the spread of the virus.
Western Regional Veterinary Director, Dr. Simon Gbene says: “We have depopulated all the farms and also disinfected the farms. We have put the farms under observation for three months, and then we will see if we will allow the farmers to go back to business because we do not want the existing birds to get onto the market. So far, 10, 000 birds have been destroyed.”
In 2021, seven regions reported cases of the flu; namely the Upper West, Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti, Volta, Western, and Western North Regions.
During the last outbreak, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced a total ban on the importation of poultry and poultry products from neighbouring countries where the prevalence of the disease was confirmed. There was also a ban on the movement of poultry and poultry products within and from the affected regions and districts to other parts of the country, and strict inspection and issuance of permits to cover the movement of all poultry and poultry products from unaffected parts of the country.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says the pursuit of strong economic growth and enhanced domestic revenue mobilisation will help the economy rebound faster from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the investiture of a new Vice Chancellor of the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, in Wa, on Thursday, 20th January 2022, President Akufo-Addo stated that, despite the difficulties confronting Government, the economy is experiencing a positive but slow growth in 2020.
According to the President, data from the Statistical Service puts the average growth rate of the economy for the first three quarters of 2021 at 5.2%, putting the country on course to exceed our provisional growth outturn of 4.4% for 2021.
“Our growth performance compares very favourably with the IMF growth estimate of 3.7% for sub-Saharan Africa, and 3.6% for ECOWAS countries. We are still on course in our fiscal consolidation agenda. The Ghana Revenue Authority exceeded its 2021 tax revenue target, and we are confident we will achieve, if not surpass, the eighty-billion-cedi (GH¢80 billion) target for this year,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo continued, “This combination of strong growth and domestic revenue mobilisation will enable us to meet our fiscal deficit target for 2022, and reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio, thereby providing fiscal space to continue to implement programmes such as our flagship programmes like the Free SHS policy, the One-District-One-Factory initiative and the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs, the development of our infrastructure, particularly our roads, and create more jobs for our youth.”
Touching on the creation of jobs for Ghanaian youth, the President told the gathering that the 2022 budget has set aside ten billion cedis (GH¢10 billion), for the next three years, in support of young entrepreneurs to enable them create new businesses and expand existing ones.
“Under the YouStart programme, Government, through the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), which proved its mettle in its efficient supervision of the seven hundred and fifty million (GH҃¢750 million) CAP Business Support Programme to micro, small and medium scale enterprises at the height of the pandemic, and the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), will direct financial and technical support towards young entrepreneurs in the country to develop commercially viable businesses, and create jobs for the youth,” he said.
The YouStart Programme, he added, will be a vehicle for supporting young entrepreneurs to gain access to capital, training, technical skills and mentoring to enable them launch and start their own businesses, and employ other young people.
“Successfully implemented, the YouStart programme will make a significant dent in youth unemployment, and enhance considerably social stability and progress. This University should be at the forefront of critically examining this initiative, and making proposals to enhance its implementation,” the President said.
New VC, Registrar Congratulating Professor Philip Duku Osei and Mr. Job Asante on their appointment as Vice Chancellor and Registrar, respectively, of the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, President Akufo-Addo was confident that, in the two persons, “we have persons capable of laying a strong foundation for the rapid take-off of this University”.
“The Vice Chancellor’s induction into office today is a mark of the trust that the first-ever Governing Council of the University has reposed in him, and I am confident that this trust will not be broken. His wealth of experience, with decades of service, makes him an appropriate person for this all-important assignment. I want to assure him that my government will help ensure that the University fulfils its mandate,” he added.
It was, thus, the President’s that the University will produce graduates, who are moulded to take on the opportunities and possibilities for higher achievement, through creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation, and who will, thereby, help generate prosperity for the masses of Ghanaians.
He concluded by stressing that “You have my support and the support of Government in the pursuit of your progressive agenda for the University, which, Vice Chancellor, you have outlined in your acceptance speech. I wish both of you the very best of luck and God’s guidance in all your endeavours.”

An Adentan circuit court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Mark Okraku Mantey, the deputy minister of tourism, arts and culture, for failing to appear before it.
The deputy minister has been charged for allegedly violating Sections 7 (1) and (2) of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act. The prosecution says he forcibly gained access to the land, owned by one Alhaji Tony Baba.
Okraku Mantey was to appear in court yesterday (18 January) to continue completion of the case management conference for the trial to commence but failed. His lawyer was also absent, but he sought permission from the court.
Prosecuting, Superintendent of Police Patience Mario prayed the court for a bench warrant to effect the arrest of the accused person. The court presided over by Sedinam Awo Balokah, issued the warrant and adjourned the matter to 8 February 2022.
Double claim The case of the prosecution was that the complainant, Alhaji Tony Baba, was an estate developer residing in North Legon, Accra.
It said the complainant was developing a parcel of land at Oyarifa High Tension, ownership of which the accused person, too, was allegedly claiming.
The prosecution said on 3 March last year, the accused person went to the site with three “thugs” two of whom were on a motorbike and another in his (the deputy minister’s) car.
The prosecution said on 9 March last year, the accused person visited the site for a few hours, after which the “thugs” with whom he previously visited the site went back to the site and attacked the workers and caused damage to parts of the building allegedly.
It said the complainant reported the matter to the police and mentioned the accused person as the one behind the “unwarranted attacks and damages”.
Triple damage The prosecution said that, during interrogation, the accused person was contacted to report at the police to assist in investigations.
It said while police were waiting for the accused person, more damage was allegedly caused to the three-bedroom building on 10 March last year, and Okraku Mantey was identified as the one who had brought and ordered the “thugs” to cause the damage.
The prosecution said that on 3 April last year, the complainant’s workers were allegedly attacked again and two people sustained injury.
It said the injured people were issued with police medical forms so they could seek treatment.
On 20 March 2021, further extensive damage was allegedly caused to the building, which had been built to lintel level and was valued at GHC63,700.

Nelson Boateng; is a Ghanaian eco-entrepreneur, who is leading the way in the secondary usage of plastic waste. He is the founder of Nelplast Eco Ghana Limited, a plastics recycling company that transforms plastic waste into building materials. Unlike many who recycle plastic waste into bags or other handy products, Nelson uses plastics as ‘concrete’ to build roads and houses. After his secondary education, he didn’t move straight into any tertiary institution but decided to work for some time. He got a job in a plastic company that made polythene bags, plastic bowls, rubber buckets, among others. That was the unpopular yet rewarding move Nelson made. Nelson, as industrious as he has always been, worked with the company for eight years and rose to become the manager. While managing the plastic company, a situation arose between the owners of the company that eventually led to its dissolution. But for someone who has been interested in entrepreneurship since age 14, it became an opportunity for him to set the stage for his dreams to become a reality. Nelson decided not to enter any industry other than the one he already knew—plastics. He set up Nelplast Ghana Eco Limited in 2014 He began reading and researching what other things plastics can be used for that will be friendly to the environment. That was when he came up with a unique paste which is a mixture of sand and plastics to make bricks. Now having discovered what he wants to do, he moved straight into it, and that was the beginning of his to use plastics to build houses and roads. Driven by the motivation to preserve the environment, Nelson came up with an idea that would be more sustainable and usable in such a way that it will not cause further pollution. The 36-year-old began the initiative between 2015 and 2016 when there was fierce media debate on the need to ban plastic waste so as to make the city clean.
He set up a bricks manufacturing center that converts plastic waste into blocks for building. The bricks, Nelson explained, are not made with mortar and have the ability to withstand earthquakes or tremors. According to him, the plastic blocks could also be used as foundation bricks in waterlogging or salty areas. Boateng revealed that he used some 13,400 kilos of plastic waste collected from gutters and beaches in the country to build a house. Indeed, it is regarded as the first house to be constructed using plastic waste in Ghana. In 2020, he was named alongside the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, President Akufo Addo and others as the Top 50 African Disruptors .

Ghana striker Benjamin Tetteh has reportedly been ban by the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for punching Gabonese player after full time.
This will rule Tetteh out of the knockout and quarter final stages of the tournament as the Black Stars take steps to qualify to the next stage of the tournament.
Tetteh was shown a retrospective red card by Algerian official Lahlou Benbraham for swinging a punch at a Gabon player.
The incident took place at the end of Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Gabon on Friday evening, a hugely damaging result for the Black Stars in their bid to reach the knockouts.
There was visible frustration on the Ghana bench after Gabon’s Jim Allevinah scored an equaliser in the 88th minute.
And that frustration spilled onto the pitch after Benbraham blew for full-time, with players arguing with each other and their opponents.
Eventually 24-year-old Tetteh, who had come on as a substitute, swung a punch at Aaron Boupendza.
Tetteh saw the referee trying to work out who was the offender and quickly ran down the tunnel off the pitch.
After striking his opponent in a post-match brawl Benjamin Tetteh ran down the tunnel and away from the referee. Nevertheless the ref, assisted by VAR on the identity of the culprit, refused to accept that and called for his return.
After being informed of the culprit a furious Benbraham refused to leave the pitch, telling Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and other members of the Ghana set-up to “send No 25 out.”
However, Tetteh still didn’t emerge. Eventually Benbraham gestured to the crowd that the red card had been shown to No 25, which is Tetteh’s number.
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, 12th January 2022, cut the sod for the construction of the Accra STEM Academy, a school, dedicated, principally, to the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The Academy, which will be constructed within the next twenty-four (24) months, will be completed from kindergarten to high school, with an expected population of some two thousand (2,000) students.
It will have a number of state-of-the-art facilities, including a four-storey classroom block, science laboratories, a sickbay, administrative area, staff common room, library, washrooms, canteen, and a one thousand, five hundred (1,500) capacity multi-purpose hall.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the Accra STEM Academy, being constructed at a cost of thirty-two million cedis (GH¢32 million), will equip learners from kindergarten to senior high school with 21st century skills in problem solving, creativity, communication, collaboration, data literacy, digital literacy, and computer science.
“In addition, the Accra STEM Academy will be a place where learners in junior high school will be provided with the options of learning basic engineering, manufacturing, and global studies to help them make informed decisions on their preferred programmes of choice at senior high school level,” he said.
Nana Addo and Education Minister
Delivering a speech at the event, the President explained that Government attaches importance to the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at all levels of the nation’s educational system, in recognition of the centrality of STEM capability in the employment of science and technology towards Ghana’s nation’s development.
“Indeed, our world is essentially driven by technology. Energy, industry, agriculture, medicine and health, clean air and water, transportation, sanitation, the use, management and conservation of natural resources – the successful exploitation of all these sectors depends, ultimately, on the application of science and technology. So, it is obvious that, to be a part of this modern world, science and technology must be present at every stage of the development process,” he added.
Despite being one of the leading countries in guaranteeing access to quality education on the continent, President Akufo-Addo noted that Ghana’s education sector still requires some significant transformation to compete with the best in the world.
For example, he explained that Ghana must increase her Gross Tertiary Enrolment Ratio (GTER) from the current 18.84% to 40% by 2030, adding that “in accordance with Government’s Education Strategic Plan (ESP), targeted at increasing our science to humanities ratio from the current one of forty to sixty (40:60) to the desired sixty to forty (60:40) in favour of science, Government is repositioning our education system, anchored on STEM Education”.
As part of Government’s commitment to the advancement of STEM education in the country, President Akufo-Addo stated that his administration has commenced the development of twenty (20) STEM Centres and ten (10) model STEM Senior High schools across the country, which are at various stages of completion.
“Some of these schools will be operationalized this year. These institutions and centres will be fitted with state-of-the art equipment and laboratories to facilitate teaching and learning in all areas of study, including artificial intelligence and robotics,” he added.
Describing the Accra STEM Academy as a Ghana project, the President was confident that Ghana’s young people are going to acquire skills that would put them at par with their peers anywhere in the world.
“I expect parents and students to take advantage of this facility’s opportunities, and enroll in this STEM Academy. Government is committed to accelerating STEM education in Ghana, to train students with cutting-edge 21st century skills. God-willing, within the next twenty-four (24) months, we will all be back here to witness the commissioning of the Accra STEM Academy,” he added.
