‘Takoradi has taken Masquerader’s culture into a Different Level and we are not losing it’ – Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah

0

The Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Takoradi Constituency says Sekondi-Takoradi now holds the bragging rights to the famous masquerader’s culture in Ghana and they are not ready to lose it to any city.

He made this known to Skyy Power 93.5FM during the biggest masquerader’s event in Ghana, the Westside Carnival which attracted millions of viewership worldwide both physically and virtually making it the most talked about and popular cultural event during the 2021 festive season.

Explaining his reasons, he indicated that the masquerader’s culture in Takoradi which is over 60 years old has evolved to a much-advanced level and has been accepted by all classes of people in recent years, with over 10,000 individuals participating, unlike some 15 years ago when it was only perceived for “unserious individuals”.

He said, “Now, you will see doctors, engineers, business tycoons, lawyers, teachers, politicians, celebrities and people of different professions joining the masquerade bandwagon to have fun and that has changed the narrative, making it one of the most celebrated and popular cultures in the country.”

“Not only that, we have hundreds of people who travel from overseas to join the celebration including foreigners and this should let you know that the Takoradi’s masquerader’s culture is bigger than any in the country.”

Even though it originated from the Central Region of Ghana, Sekondi-Takoradi now owns it because theirs is more recognised and perfectly branded to suit international standards, the Minister made it known.

Also, since other places like Tema, Cape Coast, Agona Swedru and Winneba have adopted the masquerader’s culture, the Regional Minister is confident and has no fear that Sekondi-Takoradi will lose its bragging rights of the beautiful culture to any of these cities and towns.

Mr Okyere Darko further indicated that the Sekondi-Takoradi masquerader’s culture is now the blueprint of the modern version and before any other city or town can reach that level, they have already advanced futher.

Invite some of us to properly explain prophetic ministry to you – Owusu Bempah to Dampare

0

The founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare to invite men of God who believe in prophecies to give him what he calls satisfactory briefing on prophetic ministry.

Mr Owusu Bempah believes that the IGP issued the order against the publication of the death prophecies following briefing he received from Pastors who do not believe in prophetic ministry.

The Police had cautioned Religious leaders in Ghana to be measured in their utterances, particularly the way they communicate prophecies, ahead of New Year Eve’s services.
“We want to caution that under Ghanaian law, it is a crime for a person to publish or reproduce a statement, rumour or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or to disturb the public peace, where that person has no evidence to prove that the statement, rumour or report is true,” the police warned in a statement issued on Monday, December 27 2021.

“It is also a crime for a person, by means of electronic communications service, to knowingly send a communication that is false or misleading and likely to prejudice the efficiency of life saving service or to endanger the safety of any person,” the statement signed by Superintendent Alexander Obeng, the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, added.
“A person found guilty under these laws could be liable to a term of imprisonment of up to five years.”

Friday’s services across the nation was the first since Inspector-General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare took office.
He had met religious leaders over prophecies deemed to cause fear and panic in the nation.

That meeting was precipitated by a fake gun attack on popular musician Shatt Wale, who had later indicated he took that action as a result of a prophecy by the Founder and Leader of New Life Kingdom Chapel, Bishop Stephen Kwesi Appiah, on an Accra-based radio station before the Monday, October 18 incident.
The man of God, popularly known as Jesus Ahuofe, was arrested and later granted a GH¢100,000 bail.

The police admitted that they are not against prophecies especially in a country where the centrality of God is in the live of many.
“There should be no apprehensions, therefore, about undertaking the various activities.
“We ask only that everyone keeps within the law and is mindful of the welfare of each other.”

But Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah said during his 31st night preaching on Friday December 31 that “I will like to appeal to the IGP that if he needs briefings on the prophetic ministry he should invite some of us, not pastors who do not believe in prophecies,”

We can’t build consensus whiles you attack me Bagbin to Afenyo-Markin

0

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has objected the comments made against him by Effutu lawmaker, Alexander Afenyo-Markin over the way he handled the sitting to consider the E-levy proposal.

Mr Bagbin said Afenyo-Markin asked him to show leadership in Parliament, a comment he judged as attacking his personality.

Speaking to state broadcaster, Ghana Television (GTV) on Thursday December 30, Mr Bagbin said what transpired in the House was not something everybody is happy with.
He said “It is something that we are all not proud of. Even though we know that before you can eat the egg you have to break the shell but you don’t want to go though it yourself. You think that you have learned the lessons of those parliament, I have a way of talking more, building consensus than exchanging fire. This is building confidence in the democratic system, it is a great achievement and I hope we will build on this.

“From 2001 up to date, I have never interfered with the functions of others, not even at the board level. But today, as I said there is change, I am prepared to accept this change, I am prepared to accept the criticisms but I want genuine criticisms. I want to be, at least, consulted before I am criticized.

“The time that I was seated there, the Majority leader only shows face and then send a text to me around 4:30 that he was now going to have a bite then come back to the House , he also whispered to my usher to to inform me he was going to have a bite and come back.

“When I left he wasn’t on the floor. How can you now, lead your team to now be attacking me and say that I should lead. In fact one of them said I should learn how to to lead. It is because the level of leadership I am at , he doesn’t understand it, that is someone who claims to be my son, the Honourable Member for Effutu, the Deputy Majority Leader, Honourable Afenyo-Markin. You come and you personally attack me then you come to the House and you expect that we should have that sprit of consensus building. Things don’t work that way.”

The Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is deputy condemned the Speaker over the way he conducted himself during the parliamentary sitting on the E-levy proposal.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu had expressed disappointment in him over the way and manner he conducted himself in Parliament on Monday December 20.

According to him, the Speaker left Parliament to his home without communicating to the Second Deputy Speaker whom he handed over to.
He described this as unfortunate.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday December 21, the Suame lawmaker said “He said he will come here at 11: 30 , subsequently another message came to say that he can only be here at 12. I mean, the house cannot be held to ransom by one person. It is most unfortunate.

“Yesterday leaving the seat he told the First the First Deputy that he was handing over to, that he will come back pretty soon and all that we heard was that he had left to his house, that is mots unfortunate without any further communication to the Second deputy Speaker or to me because I have been having some discussions with him and I am told today, that he didn’t even have any discussion with the Minority as well so where are we going from where. It is most unfortunate development.”

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu on Tuesday December 21 adjourned sitting to January 19.

The Majority Leader said the adjournment of the sitting on the e-levy would afford the Majority and government more time to do further consultations on the proposal.

“I think that this will also allow us sometime to have further consultations among ourselves, it is the reason why the First Deputy Speaker had to adjourn the House sine die. As you know, the budget has been passed , there was an attempt to portray that that there is no budget, there is a budget , the appropriations bill passed.”

He added “I think that this will also allow us sometime to have further consultations among ourselves ,it is the reason why the First Deputy Speaker had to adjourn the House sine die . As you know, the budget has been passed , there was an attempt to portray that that there is no budget, there is a budget , the appropriations bill passed.”

On Monday December 20 Members of Ghana’s Parliament could not hold their emotions as some exchanged brawls in the House just before the final vote on the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy Bill, also known as e-levy.

The sit-in Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, had announced that a division would be followed to approve the Bill, presented under a certificate of urgency, and he was going to vote as well in his capacity as a Member of Parliament.
That appeared to have provoked the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, who questioned his decision to vote after presiding over the night’s proceedings.
They moved to the front of the dais, issuing threats at the Bekwai MP.

This got the Majority MPs to also start agitations and immediately Mr Osei-Owusu handed the presiding role to the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, the fight broke out.
