Police arrested three over the murder of a Chinese national

The police have arrested and arraigned a 37-year-old driver, Jacob Kwesi Acquah, for allegedly killing a Chinese national, Xiong Yin, in cold blood at Dansoman, Accra.

Acquah, a former employee of the deceased, is said to have gone to her house to demand the phone number of her house help.

When Xiong proceeded to her bedroom to get the phone number for Acquah, he followed her, pushed her onto the bed and strangled her with a pillow, allegedly.

Acquah was also said to have smashed the deceased’s head, several times, on the floor and on a metallic sliding door.

He also used the metal part of a shower handle to strike her several times, allegedly.

Two other accomplices, Faustina Otimah, a 21-year-old house help, and Memunatu Allotey, a trader, alleged to have facilitated the murder by assisting Acquah, also appeared before the Kaneshie District Court.

They are being held for abetment of crime to wit murder.

The court, presided over by Ms Ama Adomako Kwakye, reserved their plea and remanded them into police custody to reappear on June 15.

Narrating the facts of the case, Inspector Apewa Achana said the complainant, Lin Youji, a Chinese national, was residing at Dansoman Exhibition in Accra.

Acquah resided at Chorkor-Santana and Otimah, the house help of the deceased, resided at Mpoase, while Memunatu was the girlfriend of Acquah.

The prosecution said about seven months ago, Acquah was dismissed by the complainant for misconducting himself, but Acquah had been in touch with Otimah.

On May 10, 2022, Acquah called Otimah and asked her to alert him on the activities of the deceased and her fellow workers, especially when Xiong (deceased) was left alone in the house and that she should leave the small gate unlocked when leaving the house.

Prosecution said Acquah called Otimah 12 times between 9am and 11 am on May 10 to find out whether Xiong was alone in the house.

It said Acquah convinced Otimah to leave the house without informing the deceased and she (Otimah) complied.

Acquah took advantage of the unlocked gate, entered the compound of Xiong and met her in the living room and pretended he needed the contact of Otimah.

The prosecutor said Xiong innocently left Acquah in the corridor and walked towards her bedroom to pick up her phone to get him the number he demanded.

Acquah followed Xiong and attacked her, pushed her onto her bed, covered her face with a pillow and strangled her, prosecution said.

On seeing that Xiong was weak, he lifted her and sent her to the bathroom and hit her head on the metallic part of the sliding door and against the floor.

Prosecution said Acquah further used the metal part of the hand shower to hit her head several times, causing her to bleed.

Acquah, after killing her, went to the living room where a CCTV camera was fixed, removed it from the ceiling and dumped it in a water closet with the intention of erasing any trace of evidence that might implicate him.

The complainant went to the house after several calls to the deceased went unanswered, prosecution said.

To his surprise, he found both the small gate and main door to the various rooms unlocked.

He rushed to open the deceased’s door and found it locked with the key in front.

When the complainant opened the door, he found the room ransacked, so he proceeded to the deceased’s bathroom where he found her lying in a pool of blood in a supine position.

Prosecution said the complainant quickly rushed to the gate and alerted one Emmanuel Aziati about what he had seen, and both went to observe the body and went to report to the police.

It said the police went to the scene, took pictures and conveyed the body to the Police Hospital Morgue.

On the dawn of May 12, the police had information that Acquah was hiding in the house of Memunatu and they proceeded to the place but Memunatu kept Acquah in her room and led the police to a different location.

The police retrieved the memory card of the CCTV Camera where Acquah was seen in the footage entering the living room of the deceased, prosecution said.

Why didn’t you pay the Nabco and Service personnel with the ₵25million? – Ablakwa to Akufo Addo

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says, “With the economy in such bad shape, why is the Akufo-Addo government giving the National Cathedral project a huge GHS25 million?”

In a post on Facebook on Thursday, June 2, 2022, he said, “It’s shocking that this is the same government that says it doesn’t have enough money to pay NABCo trainees, school food caterers, service workers, the 3-year no-textbooks-syndrome, etc.”

The opposition MP said, “The loving God we all serve can’t be happy with this lack of focus.”

“It’s also important to point out that this clearly insensitive behavior is not approved by Parliament. We’ll be asking for answers right away in Parliament.”

In March 2020, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said that the National Cathedral, which is being built in the middle of Accra, will be one of the most famous buildings on the African continent.

President Akufo-Addo told the people at a ceremony at the Cathedral construction site to lay the foundation stone so that construction work could begin that he is determined to lead the efforts to make sure the project is finished as a promise to God.

President Akufo-Addo said, “As I said on March 6, 2017, when the National Cathedral is done, it will be one of the most famous buildings on the African continent.”

In his speech, the President said there were three main reasons why he wanted to get people to help build the Cathedral.

First, the President said, “Since we got our independence from the colonial power on March 6, 1957, 63 years ago, Ghana has been hit by civil war, famine, and disease.”

“We are no better than the other countries in our area that have also had to deal with these problems. I think that God’s grace is what has kept us alive and kept us going.

The Cathedral will be built as a way to thank God for all of His blessings, grace, favor, and mercies on our country “, President Akufo-Addo said.

Secondly, President Akufo-Addo said, “Seventy-one percent of the people in Ghana are Christian, and they belong to one of the many branches of the Christian Faith. The National Cathedral, which is open to all Christian groups, will help bring Christians together and promote national unity and social coercion “.

Lastly, President Akufo-Addo said that he promised Almighty God that if He was kind enough to make him President, he would help build a Cathedral to His glory and honor.

President Akufo-Addo said, “I am determined to keep this promise.”

June 4 armed demo: Captain Smart ‘exposed’

Captain Smart, host of Onua FM Morning Show, is on record to have said he is not aware of any letter by his group, #FixTheCountry Movement, notifying the Ghana Police Service of a planned demonstration on Saturday, June 4, in which they [protestors] requested to hold weapons and to hire private security personnel.

The Accra Regional Police Command named him [Captain Smart] together with Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, Benjamin Darko, and Oliver Barker-Vormawor in a letter they received notifying them of a planned three-day demonstration.

The group indicated that the demonstration was to start on Saturday, June 4, 2022, adding that they intended to contract a private security company to protect them.

“That the demonstrators and the contracted private security personnel will be armed with weapons.

“That the armed demonstrators will picket at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and the Ghana Police Headquarters.

“That at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), they will demand to speak directly to the nation on GTV and layout their grievances,” the police said in their statement indicating that they cannot ‘shepherd’ such a demonstration.

Reacting to this on 3FM on Wednesday, June 1, Captain Smart denied knowledge of the said letter and its content.

According to him, he never signed such a letter and charged the police to arrest and deal with whoever was behind the letter.

“Yes, we want the right things to be done, things are not right in this country, but I don’t support violence and not in any way will I, want to have a blade in my hand to demonstrate; we did the first demonstration without even a stick… whoever wrote that letter is sick,” he stated.

“…and then if I am a convener and you want to write a letter on behalf of all the conveners, courtesy demands that at least let me know the content of the letter you are sending on our behalf,” Smart added.

But it has emerged that, Captain Smart was privy to the contents of the letter that the members of the #FixTheCountry Movement sent to the police.

GhanaWeb sighted a purported WhatsApp screenshot between one of the protest leaders, Oliver Barker-Vormawor and Captain Smart.

Barker-Vormawor, who was the one who wrote the letter on behalf of his colleagues had sent the pdf soft copy of the letter to Captain Smart on WhatsApp, with the letter saved as “Notice to the Police”.

Barker-Vormawor wrote, “Captain, this is the notice to the police.”

Captain Smart replied, “Great”.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor followed up with a need for amendment: “hold on, I have decided to add more things to make it more scary.”

Then, Captain Smart replied, “Ok boss.”

however, cannot independently confirm the authenticity of the said WhatsApp conversation screenshot shared by Oliver Barker-Vormawor which is now removed .

Chaos at Wa as Ghana police arrest 18

Riot broke out in the capital town of the Upper West Region following the arrest of three persons who were connected to the flogging of two lovers at the forecourt of Wa Naa’s palace.

The protesters thronged the Wa police station demanding the release of the three persons who had been arrested earlier.

Amidst chanting, the angry youth blocked roads, burnt tires, and pelted stones at officers on duty in their quest to get their demands met.

According to the police, the situation needed to be curtailed before it escalated.

In view of that, warning shots were fired to contain the situation.

Following the chaos, the police disclosed that 18 persons have been arrested.

Upper West Region Police Crime Officer, ACP Reynold Manteaw said, it included 16 males and 2 females.

He also noted that a manhunt has been mounted to apprehend more individuals believed to have flogged the victims for physical abuse.

A video clip of lovers being canned went viral on Tuesday. It was said they were being flogged for filming their sexual act.

According to the young men, it was wrong for them to have filmed their sexual act.

Therefore, they were punished for tarnishing the reputation of the town and for engaging in an act that is frowned upon by Islam.

Subsequently, 32-year-old Bushran Khidiri, a phone repairer was arrested. He is alleged to be one of the young men who forced the young lady in the leaked sex video to the Wa Naa’s palace for the flogging.

Later, 70 year old Issahaku Mahama and and 62 year old, Naa Sidiki Mahama, a farmer from Wa-Dobile, were arrested.

Reports indicate that the duo was arrested by some young men in the town and taken to the Palace. However, upon their arrival at the Palace, the Wa Naa was absent.

The young men, instead of waiting on the Chief, decided to take the matter into their own hands and delivered a punishment they deemed fit.

The two victims were given 20 lashes each.

Meanwhile, the Police are still searching for other culprits in the abuse of the two victims.

‘Dampare’s response to British High Commissioner is needless’ – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also added its voice to the widespread condemnation which has greeted the Ghana Police Service’s letter to the British High Commissioner to Ghana.

According to the party, the response was unwarranted.

Madam Harriet Thompson in a tweet said she was looking out for the outcome of the #FixTheCountry convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor’s latest arrest.

“Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convener of #FixTheCountry movement, arrested again, I understand [it’s] for a motoring offense [and he’s currently] on his way to court. I’ll be interested to see where this goes…,” she said in a tweet on Tuesday, May 17.

However, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare said the High Commissioner’s comments on the matter were from “a biased or uninformed position.”

“Ordinarily, the Ghana Police Service would not have responded to comments such as yours, obviously made from either a biased or uninformed position.”

“However, we have learnt from a previous painful experience that it has not been helpful to ignore such misguided, unwarranted, and biased comments intended to tarnish the reputation of the Ghana Police Service and that of our country.”

But NDC in a press release signed by its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, maintained that the response from the IGP was “misguided and regrettable”.

“The IGP’s regrettable and misguided letter has the tendency of jeopardizing the enviable cordial bilateral relations between Ghana and Britain.”

The party added that the IGP should have made his grievances known to the Interior Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry for onward action.

“The NDC takes the considered view that Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare should have raised his concerns about the British High Commissioner’s tweet on Oliver Barker-Vormawor’s latest arrest with Ghana’s Foreign Minister through the Minister of the Interior for it to be addressed via the usual diplomatic channels.”

Take precautions ,thunderstorms are not spiritual – Ghana Meteo

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) has told the public not to attribute thunderstorms in the recent rains to spiritualties.

The GMA urged the public to rather take precautionary measures when raining.

The GMA explained that injuries’ that occur during thunderstorm are due to meteorological conditions but in our part of the world, such occurrences are attributed to spiritualties.

The Chief Forecaster at GMA, Felicity Ahafianyo, made the appeal while reacting to the thunder which struck and killed a 17-year-old male student of the Sokode Senior High School at Ho in the Volta Region.

The incident which happened during heavy rains in the late hours of Monday, May 30, 2022, killed the victim named Emmanuel Dorli who was said to be in the company of two of his female colleague students.

The two students who were also affected are currently in the Ho Teaching Hospital receiving treatments.

Reports say the late Emmanuel hawks coconut by the roadside after school.

Madam Ahafianyo told 3FM’s Sunrise hosted by Alfred Ocansey on Tuesday that “in our part of the world it is attributed to spirituality but in the US, it [thunder] kills about 50 people in a year so it is very possible in Ghana”.

She added “There could be thunder which could kill in the coming rains in Ghana. Yes. It can happen. You don’t have to be on phone while it is on charge and it is raining, do not be closer to mirror while it is raining, do not be under a tree while it is raining and even if you are in doors, you don’t have to be closer to a window.”

Sarkodie to appear in High Court

An Accra High Court has summoned Ghanaian rapper, Micheal Owusu Addo popularly known as Sarkodie to testify on a matter he has knowledge in.

The case involves Jude Osei versus Kantanka Automobile, Kwadwo Safo Jnr.

He is expected to appear before the High Court on Monday, July 13 to give evidence on behalf of the plaintiff or the defendant.

Kantanka Automobile and Kwadwo Safo Jnr. have been sued over a failed social media promise with an account kantanka_daily.

In a writ issued on May 14, 2019, Plaintiff Jude Osei said he received a message on Kantaka Automobile private message to share a picture of Kantaka Automobile car on Twitter and if he was able to get 30,000 retweets, he would be rewarded a Kantanka Mensa car.

After almost a year, Jude Osei was able to gain 30,000 retweets. He subsequently sent a message to Kantanka for his reward but around the time he asked for his car, Kantanka automobile issued a disclaimer that the general public should treat any tweet offering Kantanka Mensa for 30,000 retweets as a hoax.

Jude Osie raised concerns as to why the company was silent and never issued a disclaimer for almost a year and only announced it after he had gained over 30,000 retweets. Based on this, he headed to court.

Jude Osei’s lawyer, Felix Nana Osei argued that the account is not fake as the handle was once used to tweet a message to Sarkodie to which the rapper responded.

The tweet was also retweeted by Kwadwo Kantanka Jnr. with the same handle, Kantanka_daily.

He also argues that, even if the account was fake, the company should not have waited for over a year before issuing a disclaimer.

They are however demanding: A declaration that at all material times the Defendants caused, allowed and or permitted me @kantanka daily Twitter account to carry itself as an agent of the 1st Defendant, damages for breach of contract and a declaration that @kantanka_daily entered into a valid contract with the Plaintiff to the knowledge of the Defendants among.
