Cedi sours as inflation hits 18-year high

The African Development Bank has called on rich countries to lend it some of the $650 billion of special drawing rights issued to them by the IMF as part of the fund’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The whole of Africa received less than half the amount assigned by the IMF to the US, for example, as allocations were made based on factors including the size of countries’ economies.

The AfDB has proposed using the SDRs as collateral to raise further funds to support poorer African countries.

The plan builds on an initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa for SDRs to be utilized to enhance the IMF´s capacity to support countries in need, leveraging the multilateral development banks and creating a new Liquidity and Sustainability Facility (LSF) to lower the liquidity premium on sovereign bonds offered by developing countries.

The need for such support mechanisms is becoming increasingly urgent for more governments: this week, FX shortages and high debt levels forced Malawi’s government to seek renewed access to the IMF’s extended credit facility. Expect more to follow.

Naira to gain on political dollar flows

The Naira appreciated marginally against the dollar this week, trading at 606 from 607 at last week’s close.

Nigeria this week shelved a planned $950m Eurobond sale due to adverse market conditions, with the finance ministry saying it will instead use the IMF’s special drawing rights to fund projects and then reduce external borrowings this financial year.

Meantime, former Lagos State Governor and presidential hopeful Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged as the primary candidate for the ruling APC after seven other potential candidates withdrew from the race to support him.

We expect to see further gains for the Naira in the weeks ahead as political dollars circulating in the country get converted into local currency.

Cedi outlook sours as inflation hits 18-year high

The Cedi lost ground against the dollar this week, trading at 7.88 from 7.80 at last week’s close as Ghana continues to battle with surging inflation.

Prices increased 27% year-on-year in May from 23.7% in April, the fastest pace in 18 years, driven higher by food and transport costs. Hefty interest rate hikes in March and May have so far failed to halt the rise in prices.

The Cedi has now lost about 5% of its value against the dollar in the past month and more than a fifth of its value since the start of the year. We expect the Cedi to remain under pressure in the near term as higher interest rates filter through to the economy.

Rand strengthening may be shortlived

The Rand strengthened against the dollar this week, trading at 15.3 from 15.5 at last week’s close.

The currency could be poised for renewed volatility, however, after South Africa’s central bank this week changed the way it implements monetary policy by moving to a so-called surplus system that allows commercial banks to hold and earn interest on excess reserves.

This could make it easier to speculate on the Rand and lead to larger price moves. Technical charts point to a potential downside. Overall, we remain cautious, with economic data in the US and EU likely to dictate the Rand’s direction over the coming week.

Egyptian Pound slumps to a five-year low

The Pound weakened to a five-year low against the dollar this week, trading at 18.71 from 18.63 at last week’s close.

Deteriorating business conditions in the non-oil sector of the economy and a stronger dollar continue to negatively impact the currency.

Increased input-cost inflation has also seen new orders fall at the fastest pace in almost two years.

We expect the Pound to continue weakening over the coming weeks in the absence of any significant positive economic data.

Kenyan Shilling retests record low

The Shilling was back trading at its record low against the dollar, weakening to 117.01 from 116.81 at last week’s close.

The continued weakness comes as elevated demand for the greenback from the energy and manufacturing sectors bumps against an ongoing shortage of FX.

This dollar scarcity coupled with higher production costs has put further strain on the cost of living.

The World Bank says it expects Kenya’s economic growth to slow to 5.5% this year from 7.5% in 2021 due to higher commodity prices and a severe drought in the region.

We foresee the Shilling losing further ground in the coming weeks ahead of August’s presidential election.

First rate hike since 2018 boosts Ugandan Shilling

The Shilling strengthened against the dollar this week, trading at 3719 from 3740 at last Friday’s close.

The brighter outlook follows Uganda’s decision to raise interest rates late last week for the first time since 2018 to counter surging inflation and the weakening currency.

The central bank lifted its benchmark rate 100bps higher to 7.5%.

The bank also cut its economic growth forecast for this year to between 4.5% and 5% from an earlier estimate of 5.5% to 6%. We expect the rate hike to continue supporting the Shilling over the coming week.

Budget may heighten on Tanzanian Shilling volatility

The Shilling weakened marginally against the dollar this week, trading at 2330 from 2328 at last week’s close, taking losses over the past month to 0.3%.

Tanzania’s Minister of Finance and Planning Mwigulu Nchemba this week said the government is planning to spend TZS9.09tr on debt servicing over the coming financial year that begins in July—more than half of the ministry’s TZS14.94tr budget that Nchemba is seeking for parliament to approve.

We expect the Shilling to be more volatile than normal over the coming week given the government is scheduled to present its 2022/23 budget speech on Tuesday.

Akufo-Addo is managing the economy well in this ‘difficult’ -Osafo Maafo

The former Minister of Finance believes Akufo-Addo’s leadership over the last couple of years as president has been excellent for which Ghanaians must be grateful for their luck. Mr. Osafo Maafo says Ghana’s economy would have crashed if former President John Mahama was President of Ghana now.

“… So Ghana is lucky that some things that have happened are happening when Akufo-Addo is President. Many serious crises that collapse economies are happening at the period Akufo-Addo is President. So Ghanaians are lucky President Akufo-Addo is the President else the economic situation would have worsened” he said.

Mr. Osafo Maafo said the price of iron roads and wheat are skyrocketing because of the direct impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and no nation is left behind.

“Akufo-Addo has managed the economy very well, if Mahama was President, the economy would have collapsed. I was in Georgia When the Ukraine war started. Georgia is the next door to Ukraine we never thought the Ukraine war will affect Ghana I never thought of it. Not knowing about 30 to 40% of iron rods we use here are imported from Ukraine, wheat to is imported from there I never knew this,” he said

I used Togbe Afede’s BMW for my wedding just to show off – Adom Otchere

Broadcast Journalist with Metro TV Paul Adom Otchere has reacted to claims that he is being ungrateful to Togbe Afede after years of providing him support.

Broadcast Journalist with Metro TV Paul Adom Otchere has reacted to claims that he is being ungrateful to Togbe Afede after years of providing him support.

Togbe Afede is said to have provided his BMW 7 series luxurious salon vehicle for Paul’s wedding and also gave him a cheque to pay his fees.

According to Paul’s critics, someone who has helped him should not be attacked in such a manner just because he does not agree with him on such issues.

But reacting to the critics, Paul Adom Otchere indicated that he took the car because he wanted to show off on the wedding day and that he had a similar car from Dr. Kofi Abban.

“So this is the story, this is Kofi Amoah’s car and this is Togbe Afede’s car and they are the same car. So I just wanted to show off that’s all so I asked Togbe to give me the car and he gladly gave it to me,” he said.

On paying his school fees, Paul Adom Otchere indicated that when Togbe released the money for his school fees at the Ghana School of Law, his fees had been paid.

He said he did not understand why people will make noise about the fact that Togbe paid his fees for him because there were people who had in the past paid his fees and no noise had been made about it.

E-Levy is a blessing to Ghana  – Cwesi Oteng

According to Cwesi Oteng, he has supported the government’s decision to introduce the E-Levy because he believes it is going to transform the country.

“I stood up and defended him. I was the only artiste in Ghana who said E- Levy is a good thing. ‘Everybody run go hide’. When I said  E-Levy was a good thing the whole of Ghana insulted me for three days but I was the only person to believe in it. This is because I believe that it is the biggest transformation to the economy for any president who takes over.” Cwesi Oteng said this in an interview with Power FM monitored

Cwesi Oteng is of the assessment that, since the policy is a good one, even if the current NPP government fails to put the money generated into appropriate use, anyone who takes over from them will put it into good use for Ghanaians to benefit.

“People say they (NPP) will mismanage it, but that is cool, if they mismanage it, somebody will come and that will become a good avenue for income and can use that one for a lot of things”, he noted.

No E-levy charges on Electronic clearing of cheques – GRA

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has emphasized that electronic clearing of cheques does not attract E-Levy.

The Authority is currently holding e-Levy stakeholder sensitization workshops at various locations in Accra and Kumasi.

The aim is to break down the tax law so that “we all understand and know what the levy applies to and what it doesn’t apply to,” the GRA said.

“If you transfer from your personal account (registered under your name) to your company account (registered under your company name) you will be charged the levy,” the authority tweeted.

The e-levy started on May 1, 2022 amidst public concerns.

Officials at the GRA said earlier that they were available to receive complaints regarding the implementation of the e-levy policy.

Florence Otoo, Head of Communications and Public Affairs at the GRA told TV3 in interview that the authority has created hotlines through which the public can reach the GRA to file their complaints.

“If you complain to your charging entity or you have some difficulties or challenges or you have been deducted the e-levy in a wrongful manner and you are not satisfied with what your entity is doing, GRA is also available.

“We have hotlines, we have our toll free line that is 0800900110. If you call that number we will be able to make sure that we are addressing your challenges,” she said.

Confirmed cases of monkeypox in Ghana

Five cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the Eastern, Western and Greater Accra regions, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) says.

One of the cases was recorded in a Ghanaian who travelled to the United States of America from Ghana.

According to the Director-General of the Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the cases were identified through the testing of 12 suspected cases, including one case that was reported from the Western Region.

“I am sure of late we have had a lot of discussions on social media on monkeypox, and I think the most popular one was the one from the Western Region. That was negative; we tested and it was negative.

“So far, since the outbreak, we’ve tested 12 suspected cases in Ghana since May 24, 2022. Currently, we have confirmed five cases in three regions – Eastern, Western and Greater Accra. No deaths have occurred among the cases,” he revealed at press briefing on Wednesday.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye stated that although there are vaccines available for the treatment of the disease, “I don’t think we have reached a stage where we have to call for vaccination of the cases.”

“So, prevention is the key activity that we all must embark on and also early detection and reporting if we see any rash,” he added.

Symptoms of the disease

Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness that can be transmitted from person to person through direct contact with body fluid or monkeypox lesions.

Adom-Otchere puts his stomach ahead of everything’ – Togbe Afede’s aide

Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, a Special Aide to Togbe Afede XIV, has reacted to Paul Adom-Otchere’s claim that the Paramount Chief and the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli attended 39 out of 242 meetings of the Council of State.

According to him, the attacks by the host of Good Evening Ghana are “a waste of intellectual resources and tongue, for the respected wise King, Togbe Afede XIV”.

In a statement, Togbe Afede’s special aide accused Adom-Otchere and his paymasters of putting “their stomachs ahead of everything” they do.

“It is also very unfortunate that to the jaundiced eye, everything is yellow,” Dr. Apetorgbor stated in his statement.

Paul Adom-Otchere had stated on his show that, “of the 48 months, the Council of State held 242 meetings of which Togbe Afede XIV attended 39 [meeting]; it constituted 16 percent.”

He added, “the Council of State is paid every month and he [Togbe Afede] took all his salaries, of which he is entitled to it. In giving us the narrations, he should have stated that he was unable to attend all the meetings of the Council of State, yet he took all his salaries including his car loan, a waiver from Ghana Ports and Harbour’s Authority to import cars…the amount of monies government [took] off the loans that were paid to the Council of State members are more than the GH¢365k he is talking about, for a person who only attended 16 percent of Council of State meetings…

“If you check the Council of State transportation allowances, Togbe’s allowance was paid as of coming from Ho in the Volta region; some of the members told me that ordinarily, he lives in Accra but he said he was coming from Ho.”

This, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor challenged the Board Chairman of the Ghana Airport Company Limited and his paymasters to prove otherwise.

He said, “Togbe Afede XIV, during his time on the Council of State has never received any traveling allowance from Ho. Togbe respects himself and would not bring himself to that low and cheap level.

“The car loan he subscribed to when he served on the Council of State was offered by SG-Bank and it was optional and never a loan from the Government of Ghana. Meanwhile, he has paid his loan.

“Most importantly, he was the Chairman of the Economic Committee of the Council of State and was one of the most committed and regular members of the Council of State meetings. The minutes of the meeting attendance are available for verification.”

Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, therefore, urged the people of Ghana to “expose evil and corruption in other to rescue the nation and its resources from further decadence.”

PRESS RELEASE

UNSUBSTANTIATED CLAIMS BY MR. PAUL ADOM-OTCHERE HOST OF ‘GOOD EVENING GHANA’ METRO TV PROGRAM REFERS:

I consider it a waste of intellectual resources and tongue, for the respected wise King, Togbe Afede XIV, to respond to unethical and ignorant Paul Adom-Otchere and his promoters, who put their stomachs ahead of everything.

It is also very unfortunate that to the jaundiced eye, everything is yellow.

But it is worth noting the following for the records and to challenge Paul Adom-Otchere and his paymasters to prove otherwise:

1. That Togbe Afede XIV, during his time on the Council of State has never received any traveling allowance from Ho. Togbe respects himself and would not bring himself to that low and cheap level;

2. That the car loan he subscribed to when he served on the Council of State was offered by SG-Bank and it was optional and never a loan from the Government of Ghana. Meanwhile, he has paid his loan.

3. Most importantly, he was the Chairman of the Economic Committee of the Council of State and was one of the most committed and regular members of the Council of State meetings. The minutes of the meeting attendance are available for verification.

NPP is now a vengeful political party – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Sam George says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is now a vindictive political party.

According to him, he has been critical of the Nana Addo Dankwa AKufo-Addo government and so the President and all other appointees have failed to help him undertake major infrastructural projects in his constituency.

“When It comes to major infrastructural projects I can’t do it because I have to lobby the government. I’ve been one of the biggest critics of President Akufo-Addo and it comes at a cost. The NPP is a vindictive political party so whatever they have to do for the people of Ningo-Prampram, they will not do it even though the President’s wife is from Ningo Prampram.”

Regardless of the NPP’s vindictiveness towards his constituency, Sam George indicated that he has been able to undertake several projects including renovating existing schools and providing access to water for some towns in his constituency.

He acknowledged that he cannot do all but believes that if he had the support of government, the people of Ningo Prampram would have enjoyed goodies of good governance.

My “Will” is bigger than Sir John’s Own-Kennedy Agyapong

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP, Assin Central, has described assets by former Forestry Commission CEO Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, as peanut.

According to him, when his will becomes public, Ghanaians would be shocked to see the properties he has been able to acquire for himself.

Agyapong, who was speaking to NPP delegates in the USA, said the brouhaha surrounding Sir John’s Will is needless.

He noted that the controversy surrounding Sir John’s will could be an agenda propagated by the opposition NDC. Hence, he warned his party against making comments that would denigrate the late Sir John.

“Whatever NDC is setting as an agenda, it will come to haunt us. Sometimes there is no truth in it, and so we have to be careful with Sir John’s issue of six plots. Me, when I declare my assets, you would be shocked because when I was reading Sir John’s Will, I said but this is peanut.

“[If] I put myself in the person’s shoes that if I am dead today, is this what is going to happen even within my own party? So we have to be careful,” Kennedy Ohene Agyapong stated.

Akyem Engresi Chief bans Krobos from burying dead relatives

There is tribal tension simmering between the Chief of Akyem Engresi and Krobo settlers at Akyem Kwateso over a land dispute.

The tension has escalated in the last few weeks after the Chief of Engresi, Osabarima Sarfo Kyei Kantanka, banned the Krobos in Kwateso from burying their dead relatives in the community since the land does not belong to them.

The Chief of Engresi has further ordered each Krobo resident in Kwateso to produce land title documents or risk being chased out of the community.

This was announced at the information centre to the Krobo settlers.

“We heard the announcement by Engresi chief that he has issued a month ultimatum to us to leave Kwateso. Again, anyone who is buried at Kwateso will be exhumed and dumped in our houses so we can go and bury it in Somanya.

Abusuapanyin Kwasi Dankwah, who spoke on behalf of the Kweteso chief and residents, told Starr News their forefathers purchased the land from Muoso chiefs over hundred years ago and settled on it.

“Our forefathers purchased Kwateso lands from Muoso. We have since lived peacefully with them, but for Engresi chief, he wants to invade the community and sack us. So we are appealing to our MP Hon. Abena Osei Asare, our DCE, Police commander, Regional Minister, and all to intervene in this matter. We are also appealing to IGP to Intervene. We need peace, not war.”

However, the Chief of Engresi is disputing the claims.

The Chief, Osabarima Sarfo Kyei Kantanka, said the Krobo residents have failed to honour summons by the Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, overlord of Akyem Abuakwa stool lands on the matter; instead, they wrote a letter through their lawyer.

“The order is that they should properly register the lands they are occupying; failure to do so, they should leave the community. You can’t live on Okyeman land and disrespect Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin Kwaebibiremhene. He summoned them, but they rather wrote a letter through a useless lawyer to Osagyefuo that he can go to court. This fight is not Osagyefuo’s fight; it is me, Chief of Engresi in charge of this area, who is fighting for him”.

The Chief of Engresi emphasized the ban placed on the people from burying the dead in the community.

“So my order is that their forefathers came to settle here to farm, not to bury the dead. Henceforth nobody should bury any dead body on the land. I will direct my men to exhume any dead body buried after this order and dump same in their houses. Anyone who has built at Kwateso should come and properly register the land if you have not done the same. I will use all legal and traditional means to take back my land.”

According to the chief, “I am not saying I am sacking them. They should produce land documents; if it has expired, they have the opportunity to renew them. If they fail to honour this order, and they continue to disrespect Okyenhene, we will show them the might of Okyeman”.

Starr News has, however, gathered that the land dispute has erupted due to the discovery of large quantities of gold in the Kwateso community.
