Gyakye Quayson’s lawsuit has been placed on hold after Tsatsu Tsikata filed a motion to reverse the High Court’s decision

James Gyakye Quayson, a Member of Parliament for Assin North, is being tried for perjury, and his attorney has asked that the hearing be postponed.

Tsatsu Tsikata claims that the request is required by an application that he submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday.

He disclosed that he had petitioned the Supreme Court for certiorari in order to overturn a decision made by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh to the court.

On July 13, Justice Ekue Yanzuh rejected a challenge brought by attorney Tsatsu Tsikata.

Gyakye Quayson’s attorney disputed some of Richard Takyi-testimony, Mensah’s claiming that the latter, who is the prosecution’s first witness, has firsthand knowledge of some of the allegations made.

Tsatsu Tsikata urged the court to strike eight paragraphs from the witness statement because she had objections to some parts of it.

The presiding court rejected the objection raised by attorney Tsatsu Tsikata after hearing arguments from both the defense attorney and the prosecution team, which was led by Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mrs. Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa.

The prosecution’s first witness was expected to continue speaking on Wednesday after the case was recalled.

Tsatsu Tsikata objected to the witness’ statement, but he nonetheless informed the court about the move to overturn a prior ruling by the same.

“We have requested for an early hearing for the application and we had hoped to show a copy of the application but we were informed that the registry is waiting for a date to be provided by the Chief Justice for the hearing.

“In view of the application which is significant in respect of not only this particular witness but other witnesses that are scheduled to testify, we would respectfully request that the court await the determination of the Supreme Court on that matter, especially in order to avoid prejudice to the accused person by virtue of inadmissible testimony of a witness prejudicing a fair trial of this case as the constitution requires,” he told the court.

The prosecution voiced dissatisfaction about the defense attorney’s failure to serve them with a copy of the certiorari application or the hearing date, but not objecting to the defense attorney’s request.

In response, Mr. Tsikata claimed that despite his efforts to make the copy available, it is now not possible due to Supreme Court procedures.

Despite our best efforts, we are unable to bring it, he said.

Therefore, the case was postponed to October 18, 2022, with the sitting judge noting, “You have not shown me anything but I will accept your word for it.”

Ghana is going to IMF because our leaders are not thinking well – Kwesi Pratt Jr

The Editor-in-Chief of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has descended heavily on the Akufo-Addo government over the decision to seek an IMF bailout.

According to Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the country’s leaders kept repeating the mistakes that sent Ghana to IMF and it was time for them to think.

“Let us put on our thinking caps,” he admonished while making a public lecture at a public forum organised by the pressure group Arise Ghana.

The forum which was held at the GNAT Hall in Accra was on the theme “Ghana’s socio-economic outlook, the prospects of an IMF programme.”

According to the outspoken journalist, there were “no prospects in going to IMF” and added that the Bretton Woods institution has been an executioner of developing countries for many years and Ghana wasn’t an exception.

He said the fuel price hikes and food shortages in the country all pointed to the reality that those in leadership positions are not thinking.

“We have too many stupid leaders. Now somebody should tell me how the IMF is going to cure the stupidity of our leaders,” the press freedom advocate fumed.

“No country went to the IMF and got problems solved,” he stated and blamed the return to IMF on reckless borrowing on the part of the Akufo-Addo government which he said has refused to invest in homegrown policies to boost the economy.

“Guinea fowls are now imported from Denmark [to Ghana],” he added.

“Continuing to do things over and over again and expect different answers is madness,” he chastised.

He could not fathom why Ghanaians still import and buy second-hand clothes in the country after many years of attaining independence.

J. B. Danquah was stabbed by me with a jack knife – Sexy Dondon confesses

A pen drive containing video admissions from the main suspect in the murder of the late Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, was accepted into evidence by an Accra High Court.

The late MP was stabbed during a fight that broke out when Daniel Asiedu, alias Sexy Dondon, entered his Shaishie home on a robbery mission.

The suspect showed the investigators how he entered the deceased MP’s bedroom through his widow, according to a Dailyguidenetwork.com story seen by Countryghana.

A video was taken during the accused’s interrogation and a reconstruction of the crime scene in the late MP’s home both reveal information about his demonstration.

The court was informed, prior to the pendrive containing the recordings being brought into evidence, of Daniel Asiedu’s admission that a catapult and a metal cutter discovered in the MP’s bedroom belonged to him. According to information provided to the court, the suspect acknowledged using a catapult to scare away dogs before entering a home to conduct robbery while using a metal cutter to break through burglar-proof glass in windows that prevented him from entering the home.

“According to the first accused person (Asiedu), he did not use them because there were no dogs in the house and the windows were not having burglar-proof, so after the commission of the crime, he left them in the room of the deceased,” Chief Inspector Augustus Nkrumah, the case investigator told the court on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

Sexy Dondon, who has been accused with murder, was seen in the video that was played in court demonstrating to police detectives how he pushed himself through a metal fence and entered the house. The security guard who was on duty when he entered the residence, he claimed, was asleep.

The suspect also admitted to detectives that he had no prior knowledge of the late MP’s personality and had only chosen his room from among the other options on the property since it was the only one with a light on when he first arrived.

Daniel Adu claimed that the MP’s room’s glass pane was not locked, so he slid it open, went inside, and concealed next to a drawer where he took two cell phones.

He claimed that as he was going to leave the room, the sleeping MP saw him and woke up to switch off the television. The MP, according to him, yelled “thief, thief, thief.”

Then, he informed the jury that the suspect had firmly gripped the MP’s shirt at the neck, causing a fight between them.

Asiedu said that he stabbed the deceased MP with a jack knife during the battle, weakening him so that he was forced to sit on the floor next to the bed and was unable to shout for help.

Daniel Asiedu told investigators that he continued to search the room for valuables while the late MP sat helplessly and watched him do the searching.

During his reconstruction of the incident to the investigators, Daniel Asiedu in the video played in court visibly broke down, went on his knees, placed his elbows on the late MP’s bed, and said a prayer after which he made a sign of the cross before he continued the demonstration.

Counsel for the accused, Yaw Dankwa objected to the tendering of the video into evidence. He argued that the accused was under duress and at all material times was in handcuff, tortured and deprived of sleep and also did not have a lawyer present when the videos were shot.

The defense counsel’s argument was opposed by Sefakor Batse, a Principal State Attorney who said the accused was relaxed throughout the interrogation and the cuts on the accused as a result of struggling with the late MP while the one on his face as a result of putting his head through a metal fence with thorns around it.

The video was brought into evidence by the presiding court, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, who stated that the weight to be given to it depends on how the defense attorney for the accused responds to cross-examination.

At the age of 50, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu passed away at his Shiashie Legon Home on February 9, 2016.

Many people discuss a video of six young boys eating from a trash bin

Internet users have been discussing a viral video that shows young kids between the ages of six and nine eating from trash bins. The video was seen by countryghana.
In the video, six young boys are seen consuming leftover food from a takeout container that has been dumped in an area where other bins’ trash has spilled over.

They were being urged to keep eating by a voice in the background that claimed to be the shooter, who also inquired as to whether they were looking in the trash for additional meat.

Since both the atmosphere and the food itself are unclean, the health effects of the meal’s source are concerning.

If elections were held right now, Mahama would prevail by a margin of 58 percent– New Poll

According to a recent survey by Global InfoAnalytics in July 2022, John Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress is in a commanding lead in his campaign to take over as president once more in 2025.

According to the poll, John Mahama currently has a 27 percent advantage against incumbent vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party in a hypothetical race if elections were held right now.

Another 11% would rather cast their ballot for a different candidate in the 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, a staggering 76 percent of Ghanaians think their nation is going in the wrong path, compared to only 16 percent who think it is.

This reflects a huge decline from polls conducted in April 2022, when 26 percent of respondents and 67 percent, respectively, said that things were heading in the wrong direction.

According to the poll, the president’s standing is deteriorating further, with only 23% of respondents saying they approve of the way he is doing his duties as president and 72% saying they disapprove (resulting in a net favorability rating of -49%). (April 2022, negative 40 percent ).

Atta Mills’ tomb has not been tampered with – Officials

According to those involved in the reconstruction of the Asomdwee Park, the late former president John Evan Atta Mills’ grave has not been altered.

The former president’s tomb hasn’t been touched, according to individuals working in the refurbishment of his final resting place, according to a Joynews article. They said that the tomb’s only replacement is its cover.

It further stated that the reconstruction at Asomdwee Park is a part of the preparations being made to commemorate the late Prof. Mills’ passing on the tenth anniversary and that his family is aware of this.

“We have picked intelligence from individuals who are closer to the reconstruction works who indicate that that is not the case, (the tomb has not been tampered with) and that … a wooden covering has been taken off to make way for concrete construction to be undertaken as part of the beautification process.

“…they (the sources) make the point that persons who are closer within the family of the former president are quite aware of this reconstruction that is taking place,” the report said.

Samuel Atta Mills, younger brother of the late President of Ghana, earlier accused some individuals of tampering with the tomb of the late Head of State, John Evans Atta Mills.

He claims that the Coastal Move Authority, CODA, along with a few private NGOs, interfered with the late President’s tomb without consulting the family, which is a culturally insulting development.

The MP for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo Abirem remarked in a press conference on Tuesday, July 19, that the family objects to any activity carried out by a private NGO in honor of their late brother and questioned whether the late President’s body was still buried in the Asomdwee Park burial.

“A group calling itself Atta Mills Institute that the family doesn’t even recognize, and Coastal Development Authority, have gone to break the grave of President John Evans Atta Mills. They have removed the tomb, and they claim that they are rebuilding it.

“My question is that, we have a family tradition. Now that they have touched someone’s grave, is the body still in there? Who has the body? Why will you touch the body without informing the family head? Under whose authority? Why do they want us to always go through grief? Now, you allowed somebody like Koku Anyidoho, that buffoon, working with Atta Mills Institute to go and touch this grave without informing our family head; this is a former President, why will the government allow this to happen? This is an insult to the family and the nation,” Samuel Atta-Mills said.

$750 Afreximbank loan: Minority reverses course, now in favor of facility approval

The 750 million dollar Afreximbank loan has caused the minority in parliament to reverse course.

The facility and a 250 million one were destroyed by NDC MPs.

However, they asked the government to disclose the purposes for which the $750 million facility will be used.

The Minority abandoned its opposition after the government provided the Parliament with these specifics.

Cassiel Ato Forson, ranking member of the Finance Committee, stated in a floor speech that the action would enable the country’s foreign reserves to be strengthened in order to prevent a complete collapse of the economy.

The majority leader and Suame MP Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will be protected from additional threats from his constituents, according to the former deputy finance minister.

Below is the Finance Committee Report on the loan.

Adwoa Safo’s seat can only be declared vacant by the Speaker – Ricketts-Hagan

Sarah Adwoa Safo is still the representative for the Dome Kwabenya constituency, according to George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, ranking member of the Privileges Committee of the House of Representatives.
The Cape Coast South MP stated that only the Speaker of Parliament has the authority to declare Adwoa Safo’s seat empty when speaking with Captain Smart on Onua TV/”Maakye” FM on Wednesday, July 20, 2022. She continues to represent Dome Kwabenya in Congress.

The MP highlighted that no member of the House, including a Committee Chair or anybody else, may declare a seat vacant until the Speaker instructs the Clerk of Parliament to do so.

Three additional MPs, including Sarah Adwoa Safo, were called before the Parliamentary Privileges Committee for missing more than 15 meetings.

The Dome Kwabenya politician, however, claims she was never served with an invitation and never appeared before the Committee.

Following the work of the Committee, the second deputy speaker and chairman of the privileges committee Joseph Osei Owusu stated that the Clerk of Parliament must declare the seat vacant in order for a by-election to be called.

A.B.A. Fuseini, a committee member, previously told the media in Parliament that the Committee never discussed anything regarding the removal of Adwoa Safo from the House and that Mr. Osei Owusu’s statements were a “utter pathological lie.”

The Clerk of Parliament’s duty, according to Mr. Rocketts-Haggan, is administrative, and only the Speaker has the authority to authorize that.

In addition, Adwoa Safo stated in a Facebook post that she will continue to support the NPP and President Akufo-Addo despite attempts to single her out for long-standing wrongdoing.

Ghana and Ukraine were placed among the top 12 countries in the danger zone for debt default – Report

Twelve developing countries, including Ghana, have been identified as having an impending debt crisis due to the global economic downturn.

Ukraine, Nigeria, Kenya, Tunisia, Belarus, El Salvador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Argentina, and Ecuador were among the other 12 nations on the list that were at risk of defaulting on their debt.

A study from Reuters claims that among other things, enormous borrowing, growing inflation, a falling currency, and a skyrocketing debt to Gross Domestic Product, GDP, ratio are the causes of Ghana’s specific predicament.

“Frenzied borrowing has caused Ghana’s debt to GDP ratio to rise to almost 85%.

“Its currency, the cedi, has lost nearly a quarter of its value this year, and it was already spending over half of the tax revenues on debt interest payments. Inflation is also getting close to 30%, “the report noted.”

According to the research, Belarus was “on the brink and at least another dozen are in the danger zone as growing borrowing prices, inflation, and debt all fuel fears of economic collapse,” and countries like Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Russia, Suriname, and Zambia were already in default.

It reported that nations seeking to prevent an economic collapse were turning to the International Monetary Fund, among other sources, for rescue plans.

Ghana is currently in talks with the IMF for one such programme after the government.

I was not attacked, the traders were only expressing their discontent – Majority Leader

The Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has disputed media reports that he was nearly lynched by traders at Suame Magazine, yesterday, Tuesday, July 18, 2022.

The MP told Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that the traders were only expressing their discontent.

He said contrary to claims that he was attacked, the situation was not as reported by a section of the Ghanaian media.

”I was not attacked. The traders only expressed, their discontent over our promise to construct the road in Suame.”

According to the lawmaker, he had gone to the area to address some issues they had raised over delays in constructing a road in the area and the Suame interchange.

He said he had gone to Suame to address the issues the traders had raised, and upon reaching a section of the area, they encountered a group who would not take any explanation on why the project had been delayed.

He explained that he moved away from the group, but they followed him and his team and at a point, started throwing sachet of water at us.

Later, we went to a conference center in the area and engaged some of them on the issues they had raised.

He disclosed that the contractor who was working on the road project suspended the project because he was short of bitumen.

Meanwhile, he has underscored the need for the party and government to enhance the communication channel to prevent these challenges.
