Let’s pray MPs do not fight over the ‘removal’ of Adwoa Safo –ACEPA Boss

The impending debate in Parliament intended to decide the future of the Dome-Kwabenya seat could become chaotic, according to Dr. Rasheed Draman, Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA).

According to Dr. Draman’s research, Sarah Adwoa Safo of the New Patriotic Party, who currently occupies the seat, has established positions in both the Majority and Minority caucuses.

While the minority is opposed to it, the majority favors her removal.

There will be chaos in Parliament, just like there was when the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) was passed, he continued, if the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is not there and any of his deputies who preside insist on participating in the vote.

“There are a lot of things at stake. My impression from visiting the House is that one of the MPs is very ill. Assuming that person is still receiving treatment and is not in Parliament, this implies that the NPP has 136 members, followed by the NDC side, which now has 136 members due to an injunction in Assin North.

“Which means, we have a real, real hung Parliament. So that if you even need a simple majority and the NDC side says look none of them is going to support a motion to remove her, support the report of the Privileges Committee, then the NPP loses the vote. Because 136, 136 and you need a simple majority, you need 1 or 2 from the NDC.

“Assuming the Right Hon. Speaker is absent on that day, it becomes a disadvantage to the NPP. Let’s pray we don’t have a fight. Like we have seen in previous circumstances,” he said.

In the meantime, Henry Boakye-Yiadom, an Akwatia MP and member of the Privileges Committee, stated in an interview with Citi TV that the committee decided by a vote of 15 to 12 that Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and Ayawaso Central MP Henry Quartey’s justifications for absenting themselves without permission were sufficient and that they should not lose their seats.

Adwoa Safo failed to appear before the committee to give a justification for her absences from the House since December 2021, he continued, which prevented the committee from making a decision on her. He continued by saying that the plenary would decide what to do about Adwo Safo.

Unconfirmed reports, however, suggest that in the committee’s report delivered to the House, Adwoa Safo’s removal was suggested by the majority of the committee’s members.

Ras Mubarak, a former member of parliament, petitioned Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, speaker of the house, to remove the three New Patriot Party members for skipping more than 15 consecutive sittings during the first session of the eighth parliament. Bagbin then referred the members to the Privileges Committee of the House.

ECG task squad will start pursuing unauthorized power users on August 1

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced its readiness to clamp down on illegal power thefts effective August 1, 2022.

The special nationwide exercise is aimed at clamping down on illegal power users to mobilize revenue for the company.

Addressing the media after one month of a moratorium in Accra, the Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama indicated that the special operation dubbed “Visibility” will see the deployment of a task force from the National Revenue Taskforce and the Revenue Protect Unit of ECG with support from the Ghana Police Service to visit homes.

Dubik Mahama added that the exercise will involve field inspection of all meters of ECG customers within their premises to audit all meters and ensure all faulty, tampered meters and illegal connections are fished out of the system.

He lamented the high rate of illegal connections identified in the system which is yielding a great loss to the company.

He, therefore, warned that anyone caught during the process will be prosecuted by the utilities court for stealing and made to face prosecution.

Mr. Samuel Dubik Mahama urged customers of ECG to cooperate with the deployed task force as and when needed.

He again cautioned against any attempt to compromise the task force in their line of duty to recover debts and losses.

‘Marriage is a blessing when it is with the right person – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the former president, has gushed about how much he loves his wife, Lordina Mahama.

The former president called Lordina Mahama his life partner and referred to their marriage as a blessing in a message published on Facebook on Wednesday.

When the proper individual is chosen for the marriage, it is a blessing. The message published by Mahama stated, “In my wife, Lordina, I have discovered a life-partner with whom I have shared every step of life’s journey for the past 30 years and more.

The former first family opened a maternity and children’s department at the Bole Hospital, a hospital in Mahama’s hometown, to commemorate their 30th wedding anniversary. The maternity and children’s section was constructed and furnished by the Lordina Mahama Foundation.

Speaking during the facility’s commissioning, Mahama lamented the failure of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-administration Addo’s to finish health facilities that had been started by his administration.

He claimed that Akufo-Addo was wasting the limited resources of the nation by initiating new projects before finishing the health facilities that had already been begun.

Therefore, Mahama advised his successor to see that all the projects he (Mahama) initiated in the health sector are finished before he begins new ones, according to myjoyonline.com.

The amount of health facilities started by previous administrations that have been abandoned is one of the heartbreaking outcomes for me as a politician.

“I use this occasion to encourage the government and the President to stop this waste of our taxpayers’ money and take urgent steps to complete these hospitals,” he said.

Free SHS food shortage is under control – Education minister

The government has taken the appropriate actions to alleviate the current food shortage experienced in schools under the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, according to the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Asaaseradio.com reports that Dr. Adutwum claims that all SHSs in the nation have gotten enough food supply to ensure that the students are properly fed.

“Yesterday, I had a zoom conference call with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), regional directors of GES and TVET service and every region confirmed that items have come in or are coming in,” the minister said.

“Buffer stock is readying itself to begin to reinvent their supply chain system to make sure that the supplies are regular. They did procurement at the local level and from Upper West to Upper East all the way to Ashanti and Greater Accra, they all said they are getting the items that they need.

“I am sure if you call them they will tell you, the items that are in short supply are now coming, so that is a cashflow, supply chain system and it is not about the budget,” he is quoted to have said on the Asaase Breakfast Show.

The recent food crisis in SHSs, according to Kofi Asare, Executive Director of African Education Watch, was caused by money that the government owes food providers.

“The main cause of the food supply disruptions is the GH¢340 million owed the Buffer Stock and by extension owed the suppliers under the Free SHS program,” he said.

According to Asare, the Free SHS would continue to have food shortages if the government, notably the Finance Ministry and the Education Ministry, do not address the cash flow issues to suppliers

‘Meet me at the FPU’ – Junior police officer challenges the chief of police

In a social media video that has gone viral, a junior member of the Ghana Police Service is seen openly denigrating a senior member of the force who at least has the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police.

The junior cop, who identified himself as a Formed Police Unit (FPU) member, can be seen violently resisting the superior officer’s directives in the aforementioned video.

Since he had not been sent on the mission, he even disregarded the senior officer’s order to give the police his police service number and requested that they meet him at the FBU.

Meet me at FBU, please. When the commander asked for his Police service number, the man replied, “You weren’t the one who brought me here.

“You’re disgracing yourself. You come to meet us trying to arrest a thief and you are giving us all these commands,” the FPU officer further stated in Twi.

The Police Commander scolded the commanding Sergeant for the behavior of the younger officer while maintaining his composure.

He then instructed the Sergeant on how to carry out the operation.

The junior officer, however, was guaranteed to be dealt with, and he added, “If you know what will happen to you, you will keep quiet.”

Black Sherif once more creates history by joining the YouTube Foundry Class of 2022

Inclusion in the YouTube Foundry Class of 2022 by the young artist Black Sherif has brought honor to Ghana and to him personally. This is remarkable because, regardless of how well-known you are, not every artist is able to do so.

In other news, Black Sherif has prevailed in his legal battle with his former employer, receiving permission to perform his songs as well as the lifting of an injunction that was put on some of them by the former employer due to a misunderstanding.

Ghana’s most allegedly corrupt institutions are the police and the presidency– Afrobarometer

The Ghana Police Service and the President’s Office are thought to be the most corrupt organizations in the nation.

The Ghana Center for Democratic Development conducted Afrobarometer research, the results of which are presented here (CDD-Ghana).

The study discovered that the Police, with a score of 65 percent, was at the top of the food chain, while the Presidency came in second with a score of 55 percent.

Police and Presidency perceived as Ghana's most corrupt institutions - Afrobarometer

Members of Parliament were ranked third in the group by the report, receiving a score of 54%.

Positive evaluations of the President’s performance, according to the assessment, fell by 31 percentage points between 2019 and 2022, from 61 percent to 30 percent.

Following suit in that order were judges and magistrates, tax officials, and the Electoral Commission.

This was announced at a gathering in Accra that the CDD-Ghana organized.

The initiative had a tenuous balance between democratic governance, institutional trust, and corruption.

Special Prosecutor looks into bloated GHC10M contract, NDA boss, and others

An investigation into a consulting agreement between the Northern Development Authority and the A&Qs Consortium has been launched by the Special Prosecutor’s office.
The Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Program’s consulting contract is the subject of the investigation.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has ordered the Controller and Accountant General’s office to halt payments.

Additionally, the current Chief Executive, pertinent prior officers, and owners of A&Qs have been invited for interrogation and released on bail along with the Coordinator for Special Initiatives Programs Napagatia Sulemana.

All those implicated, according to the Office of the Special Prosecutor, will be charged and arraigned.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor made the post on its’ official Facebook page

Background

The Northern Development Authority (NDA) has been the target of a contract amendment scandal in which a Gh5.7Million contract signed by the company’s most recent CEO was magically increased after the job was completed and payment was due.
During his tenure as CEO of NDA, Dr. Alhassan Anamzoya awarded a contract to the company A&QS Consortium for a sum of $5,720,000 that was authorized by the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) as part of the government’s Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Program, according to a series of exposés by Dr. Anamzoya (IPEP).

On January 16, 2020, the PPA gave Dr. Anamzoya’s NDA the go-ahead to employ single-source procurement to hire a variety of consultants to undertake the IPEP program for a cost of Gh5.7 million.

However, when Dr. Anamzoya left NDA, the contract ‘falsified’ itself and Dr. Anamzoya’s faked signature, raising the total contract amount to Gh10,400,000 rather than the Gh5.7Million originally agreed upon.

Only a small portion needed to be cleared before payment was made, despite the obvious deception and potential criminal consequences.

For 11 constituencies in the Upper West Region, the NDA under Dr. Anamzoya hired the A&Qs Firm to provide Consultancy Supervision at a cost of 5,720,000 with PPA permission. Despite the fact that the award letter signed by Anamzoya and the associated PPA approval indicated an amount of $5,720,000, it is claimed that the contract was altered to reflect GHC $10,400,000 before being submitted for payment, of which 30% was made.

The current NDA CEO, Sumaila Abdul Rahman, who has not publicly responded to the claims, is accused of committing the claimed violations in order to inflate the numbers and maybe steal from the government.

Despite several requests to the Chief of Staff and the Special Prosecutor on this matter, it was announced on June 30 that the Controller and Accountant General’s Department was prepared to make the remaining amount.

The previous NDA CEO petitioned Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the Chief of Staff, regarding the suspected fraud, but she did nothing, giving the appearance that the government was complicit in the sale.

Martin Kpebu claimed that he is persuaded that the President is the leader of the Criminal Syndicate at the Jubilee House and is actively involved in crimes against the state for this reason. Martin Kpebu spearheaded the appeal to the Special Prosecutor looking into the case.

Hard work Alone Can’t Make You Rich-Stonebowy

Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has made a lot of sense with his submission on generating money since he helps us realize that working hard isn’t enough to achieve financial success.

Stonebwoy, speaking in an interview about money, said that the urge to have money doesn’t guarantee that you will get money, and also, working so hard alone can never make you as rich as you want it.

According to him, working hard alone won’t make you as wealthy as you want since you also need to work wisely. If getting money is the main goal, the best thing for us to do is to all go and massage a bank, which isn’t always easy.

In his proposal, Stonebwoy helped us understand that while working hard alone won’t get you as rich as you want, working clever will, even though we think this formation differs for everyone.
