Ghana Premier League is supported by Mr. Eazi’s company with US$ 6 million

The Ghana Football Association has formally introduced betPawa as the new Ghana Premier League title sponsor.

On Wednesday, August 3, 2022, the official contract signing event took place at the headquarters of Ghana’s football, with Mr. Eazi and betPawa Majority shareholder and artist Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade witnessing the signing.

The FA and the betting company agreed to a three-year, US$6 million contract. The promotion of the Ghana Premier League will receive an annual investment of US$2 million.

Each of the 18 clubs in the Ghana Premier League will earn a portion of the sponsorship money agreed upon with betPawa, according to the GFA.

The “Locker-room Bonuses,” a winning bonus package for each player and technical staff of a winning club in the Ghana Premier League, were implemented by the GFA as part of the agreement.

Immediately following the game, the funds will be deposited to each team member’s account.

The Ghanaman Soccer Center in Prampram will get an Astro-turf that will be called the betPawa pitch thanks in part to the sponsorship. In October 2022, building is anticipated to begin.

The GFA is also anticipated to use some of the funds to sell and advertise the domestic league throughout Africa and elsewhere.

The two parties’ relationship is intended to promote the league.

Nsoatreman Rural Bank makes profits in 2021

The Nsoatreman Rural Bank

The Nsoatreman Rural Bank in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region made a profit of GH¢605,209.00 in 2021.

That moved the Bank from a net loss of GH¢679,268.00 incurred in 2020, representing an astronomical profit before tax growth of 189.10 percent.

Mr. Kofi Agyemang, Chairman Board of Directors, announced this at the 32nd annual general meeting of Shareholders of the Bank at Nsoatre and commended the Management and staff for “working to keep the Bank above waters”.

On deposits, he said, “the effects or the locked-up funds which were impaired by Bank of Ghana against Rural and Community Banks and the COVID-19 pandemic caused a stunted growth of our total deposits”.

Notwithstanding, Mr Agyemang said, the deposits grew from GH¢30.9 million in 2020 to GH¢33.3 million in 2021, indicating a 7.7 percent growth.

He said the Bank’s total assets grew to 10.82 per cent as it increased from GH¢33.4 million in 2020 to GH¢37.1 million in 2021.

Mr Agyemang said although COVID-19 brought in its trail an astronomical increase in non-performing loans in 2020, “the Bank had no alternative than to increase total loans advances to make more profit, which yielded good results”.

This, he indicated, raised the Bank’s advances by 12.22 per cent from GH¢10.1 million in 2020 to GH¢11.4 million in 2021.

On share capital, Mr Agyemang said the bank’s investments rose to 11.97 per cent from GH¢15.7 million in 2020 to GH¢17.05 million in 2021.

He noted, “Rural Banks were lucky the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG’s) share capital requirement remained GH¢1million by the close of 2021 and the Nsoatreman Rural Bank made an increase in its shares from GhC1.4 million in 2020 to GhC1.5 million in 2021.

Mr Agyemang said, “there is every indication that the BoG is going to increase the share capital requirement above GH¢2 million and, therefore, encouraged the shareholders to increase their shares to avoid sanctions against the Bank in future.

Mr Isaac Owusu Gyamfi, the President, Association of Rural Banks, B/A Chapter, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, expressed worry over the non-payment of loans facilitated by staff of Rural Banks to their family members, saying it was affecting the banks’ positive performance.

Reparations of billions of dollars won’t make a difference- MFWA slams Akufo-Addo

Sulemana Braimah, executive director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has made fun of the government’s upcoming plan to attribute the economic crisis to Europe’s failure to compensate for its colonization of Africa.

He believes that the administration will continue to cite Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War as causes for the economy’s impending collapse in addition to this new factor.

His remark follows a request by President Akufo-Addo that European nations compensate for the devastation caused by the slave trade on the African continent.

Sulemana Braimah asserted on Twitter that the absence of strong leadership will prevent billions of dollars in reparations from having any impact.

What Akufo-Addo said

At the start of a four-day meeting with diaspora participants in Accra, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo argued that reparations for the slave trade should be given to Africa.

The drain the slave trade had on the continent’s population and growth, he claimed, was still being felt today.

He insisted that it was past time to demand compensation for the slave trade.

Accra served as the host city for the summit, which had as its topic “Advancing justice: Reparations and racial healing.”

“African and African diaspora reparations are long overdue. Reparations are only a topic of discussion when they relate to Africa and Africans, as is predictable. The requests for reparations for Africa, in our opinion, are legitimate. Head of State Akufo-Addo

Entrepreneurs in the agribusiness sector must utilize the AfCFTA– ADB MD

The Managing Director of Agricultural Development Bank Plc, Dr. John Kofi Mensah has disclosed that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will help agribusiness entrepreneurs to access the African market.

The AfCFTA is a single market (duty-free-quota-free) trading bloc covering the entire African Continent with a total population of 1.3 billion with the objective to create a single continental market for goods and services.

Speaking on the side of the launch of the National AfCFTA Policy Framework Action Plan at the Kempinski Hotel, Gold Coast City in Accra, Dr. Kofi Mensah said Ghanaian entrepreneurs in the Agricultural sector can access a market with a combined Gross Domestic Product of almost US$3.4 trillion.

According to Dr. Kofi Mensah, government initiatives like the One District One Factory(1D1F) which ADB has been a key partner have the potential to help agribusiness entrepreneurs to expand their business in the African Market. “AfCFTA is a major global game-changer for entrepreneurs especially those in Agribusiness because as a continent we share similar agricultural products which can be cross traded,” he said.

The ADB Managing Director indicated with the critical role the sector plays in the Ghanaian economy the Agricultural sector remains a low-hanging fruit the country can pluck to benefit from AfCFTA.

Dr. Kofi Mensah, therefore, urged players within the Agricultural Value Chain to take advantage of the AfCFTA to expand their business and export their products and services into other countries within the sub-region.

In his remarks at the launch, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen said that the establishment of the AfCFTA is arguably one of the most transformational decisions taken by the African Union.

The recognition of the potential benefits it could bring to Ghana is the driving rationale for the development of the National AfCFTA Policy Framework and Action Plan for Boosting Ghana’s Trade with Africa. “The agreement provides immense opportunities for industrialization and the development of regional value/ supply chains,” he said.

According to the Minister ongoing initiatives under Ghana’s Ten Point Industrial Transformation Agenda such as the National Export Development Strategy (NEDS), the SME Development Initiative, the Establishment of Strategic Anchor Industries, the One District One Factory Programme, and the establishment of Industrial Parks across the country are all designed to transform the economy and enable Ghana to optimize its benefit from AfCFTA.

The AfCFTA is the most significant development in Africa since the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. It is the world’s largest Free Trade Area with a membership of 54 states.

Six students are being remanded at KNUST in connection with another rape investigation

KNUST

On Wednesday, six Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) students were placed in custody again.

The suspects were charged with raping an undergraduate.

The suspects were arraigned at the Asokore Mampong District Court before the latest development.

This is the second occasion that a student at KNUST has been accused of raping another student there.

After the hearing, the suspects’ attorney, Richard Adu Darko, told Accra-based TV3 that he believes his clients are innocent until they are found guilty by the court or enter a plea of guilty.

We honestly don’t see any evidence of rape in the facts that have been brought to us, but that is what they have been accused of, and once someone has been accused, the law states that they are presumed innocent until proven guilty or they enter a plea of not guilty.

Therefore, individuals are innocent until they enter a plea of guilty or a court of competent jurisdiction declares them guilty. They were brought to this court of the first instance at this time with the intention of being remanded into legal custody.

In the previous three weeks, there have been two incidents of this sort reported on the KNUST campus.

How a KNUST student and police officer gang-raped a female student

A KNUST student and a police officer stationed at Bomso were both detained last month on suspicion of gang-raping a school freshman.

A Level 400 Business Administration student named Joel Osei Owusu is accused of luring the girl to his room at Ultimate Hostel, previously Evandy Hostel, where he forcedly had sex with her.

The suspect recorded it using his cell phone while it was happening, according to police sources quoted by Nhyira FM.

Later, Joel called his friend into the room, who the victim strongly believed to be a police officer from the Bomso Police Station.

Additionally, according to allegations, General L/Cpl Frank Adu-Poku had intercourse with the woman against her will.

According to reports, the event happened on Tuesday, July 19, at about 2:30 pm.

The victim filed a complaint with the KNUST District CID two days later, and an inquiry was started.

Joel Osei-Owusu, the suspect, was apprehended at his hiding place by the police in coordination with the KNUST office of the Dean of Students.

During questioning, the suspect acknowledged having had sex with the complainant and named General L/Cpl Frank Adu-Poku as his partner.

There are cancer-causing substances in several “Brukina” beverages – UG research

Brukina

One would like to enjoy a cold bottle of ‘brukina’ (or bokina), a dairy milk and millet mixture, to release some stress on a sunny afternoon.

But have you bothered to know what this meal contains?

Research conducted by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research at the University of Ghana has found that some samples of ‘brukina’ and the millet and dairy milk used to prepare it, contain unacceptable levels of aflatoxins that can cause cancer after continuous intake.

The research was published in the Ghana Medical Journal.

Aflatoxins are a group of highly toxic substances produced by a fungus known as Aspergillus.

The study sought to investigate levels of aflatoxin in ‘brukina’.

Over the course of seven months, monthly samples of “brukina” were purchased from “brukina” producers for the study.

Nima and Ashaiman in Accra each had twenty-one samples taken for testing.

After testing, the researchers discovered that 2 samples from Nima and 1 from Ashaiman both contained high amounts of aflatoxin (AFB1) that were beyond the permitted threshold.

AFM1 levels were over the permissible limit in 12 dairy milk samples from Ashaiman and 10 from Nima.

Aflatoxin contamination was found in some of the “brukina” samples tested, and all levels of aflatoxins increase the risk of cancer.

AFB1 was also discovered in 2 millet samples from Ashiaman and 6 samples from Nima.

“Based on these results, it is prudent to avoid feeding infants with brukina since their bodies are more sensitive to toxic insults.

“Also, farmers and ‘brukina’ producers must be educated on good storage practices and monitored by the regulatory agents to protect the public from aflatoxin exposure and toxicity,” said Prof. Regina Appiah-Opong of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, a Toxicologist and the lead scientist.

Man stoned to death claimed the mentally-challenged woman was his mother – Kwame Nkrumah Gardens manager

The mentally-challenged woman

The officer-in-charge of the Kwame Nkrumah Water Gardens, Emmanuel Kwasi Afful, says the young man stoned to death by a mentally-challenged woman, had claimed that the said woman was his mother.

This comes after news broke that a young man, identified as Kwabena Amoani, was stoned to death at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Mr. Kwasi Afful, narrating the sequence of events that led to Kwabena Amoani’s death, said that a man ran into their yard on Monday seeking protection.

He said that the woman came in after the man, wielding a stone to attack him.

“After we managed to rescue him from the mentally-challenged woman, another young man came into our corridor and told us that the said woman is his mother and he wants to take her away. He was in a pair of trousers and a stripped shirt.

“… we advised him to get about five more people to assist him restrain the woman since he can’t do that alone. By then we had managed to drive the woman away,” Mr Afful said.

According to Mr. Afful, the man claiming to be the son of the woman trailed the woman for some time only for them to later hear that he was dead.

“The young man [in a stripped T-shirt] followed the mother to the MTN office around Paloma and returned. As to what happened that led to his death, I don’t know,” he said on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo Morning Show.

Emmanuel Afful, however, suggested that if the police or national security are contacted they can tell what happened if the CCTVs within the area are reviewed.

He, however, refuted the claim that the deceased was an okada rider since the scene of the incident was not the okada station.

Meanwhile, the Communications Director for the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Kweku Brobbey, has suggested that the woman must be brought to the psychiatric hospital to check if indeed she is mentally challenged or otherwise.

She can even be assessed at the Police Hospital, he said.

“It is the responsibility of the District and Municipal Assemblies to help remove persons with mental disabilities, who pose a risk to themselves and the public from the streets. It is not our mandate to go round taking them off from the public domain but if they notify us, we can send our personnel to accompany them to get them off in a dignified manner. Ours is to cater for them when they are brought in based on resources we receive from government,” Dr. Brobbey said.

‘You called the wrong person to speak’ – Ghanaians applaud priest at NPP’s thanksgiving service

A speech from the New Patriotic Party’s 30th-anniversary thanksgiving service on Sunday has some Ghanaians on social media in a frenzy.

Top NPP leaders, including President Akufo-Addo, were seated in the front row of the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) auditorium as the day’s preacher delivered some stern words to the congregation.

“NPP@30: Our common tradition, holding and working together a stable and prosperous nation” was the topic of the event.

Apostle Dr. Emmanuel Osei Kwabena Donkor, a former general secretary of the Christ Apostolic Church, emphasized unity as a means of fostering national development.

What language do you speak? Is it egotistical or one that would help Ghana advance? At the end of the day, we will fail and the country will collapse if our sole concern is for ourselves, simply I, me, and I, he remarked on Sunday.

Dr. Kwabena Donkor urged all parties, including political parties, to forgo sloganeering and cooperate together if the nation is to see real progress.

“If you have the men, without unity you don’t have the might. Listen, because if the men are there and the men are not united, they will not give you their brains. The party will suffer and the nation will suffer,” he preached amid cheers from the auditorium.

Ghanaians on social media believe the sermon was conspicuously blunt and bold.

The alleged cold-blooded murder of a Canadian partner by a student at Ashaley Botwe

Murder File

Police are presently holding a University of Ghana Level 100 student for reportedly killing her lover at Ashaley Botwe School Junction in Accra.

According to the authorities, a Technical Officer named Michael Fiifi Ampofo Arku helped Safina Mohammed Adizatu, age 23, perpetrate the crime.

According to the authorities, the deceased, Frank Kofi Osei, was a Ghanaian citizen who resided in Canada and had visited the nation on holiday.

According to reports, Safina, also known as Safina Diamond on social media, and Arku repeatedly stabbed the victim in the chin, jaw, and back before strangling him to death.

The two were charged with murder and conspiracy when they appeared in court in Adenta.

Osei, who is now dead, visited Safina, his fiancée, who lives at Ashalley Botwe School Junction on Sunday, July 24, 2022, and made the decision to spend the night, according to the prosecution’s case, which was made by Chief Inspector Jacob Nyarko.

The prosecution asserts that Osei was fatally strangled after being repeatedly stabbed with a knife on his chin, jaw, and back during the early hours of the morning by Safina, Arku, and other unknown accomplices.

The corpse was in the room for a full day before Safina and Arku cleaned up the blood, according to the Chief Inspector.

The accused later took the deceased from the first level of the multi-story structure down the staircase, dumped him at the gate of the home where the deceased had parked his Toyota Tundra, and then cleaned the blood stains off the stairwell, according to the prosecution.

At around four in the morning on Tuesday, July 26, Safina called a police officer to report that her boyfriend had just visited her and had passed away in her bed.

According to the prosecution, the police officer alerted the Police Patrol Team, who arrived on the spot in a hurry and discovered the deceased’s body lying at Safina’s front gate.

Safina and Arku, meanwhile, were not to be found.

Safina was apprehended after the police tracked her down to the Ashalley Botwe School Junction, according to Chief Inspector Nyarko.

According to the prosecution, Arku fled to Kumasi after perpetrating the crime.

Then it continued that actions were being taken to capture additional conspirators who were eluding capture.

In the meantime, the prosecution has aggressively opposed the accused’s request for bail.

After the proceedings, the court presided over by Nana Aba Quaiba Nunoo, upheld the accused’s pleas, and remanded the two in police custody for a further appearance on August 12.
