Ghana may experience a third external factor shortly-Oppong Nkrumah

0

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ghana’s minister of information, has issued a warning to the populace about a potential conflict between China and Taiwan, which he claims might have catastrophic effects on Ghana’s economy. He claims that when the battle breaks out, Ghanaians would claim it has no impact on the country’s economy, unlike as some people have said regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. “There is a third issue on the horizon, and if we don’t pay attention to it, it will hit us and many will deny it is a contributing factor to the problems the nation is facing.

“Do you know that China has extended the tenure of office for Xi Jinping by an extra five years? Read Xi Jipin’s inaugural speech. Somethings we fail to pay attention to these things. Xi Jinping said that he would not rule out taking over Taiwan.“The issues between China and Taiwan are no different from the issues of Russia and Ukraine – where one country thinks the other country is part of his territory and attempt to use false to annex it. If China attacks Taiwan can you imagine the consequences, especially at this time that crude oil costs $94 per barrel and is set to rise again due to OPEC cutting supply,” he said in Twi.

In an interview with Asempa that CountryGhana monitored, Oppong Nkrumah stated that although the media in other nations is really debating the implications of the impending conflict, the media in Ghana is remaining mute about it.

“If indeed China attacks Taiwan, what will be the implications? So, if we are not seeing the implication of the Russia-Ukraine war on our economy, what are we saying about the implication of a potential war between China and Ukraine?“If you turn in to other (foreign) media houses, they are discussing the implications of this issue, but we are not, and if it hits us, we will be saying it is not affecting our economy,” he stated

When asked about requests from some Ghanaians for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to apologize to Ghanaians regarding the current country’s woes, the information minister made these comments in response to the inquiry. He said that the president has acknowledged the nation’s economic situation and that requests for him to apologize for it were irrelevant.

According to media sources, Ifeanyi is believed to have drowned in the swimming pool at the singer’s home in the Banana Island neighborhood of Lagos State.

Ghana’s issues won’t be resolved by ousting Ofori-Atta-Joe Jackson

The dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta as finance minister, according to Joe Jackson, a financial analyst at Dalex Finance, won’t end Ghana’s current economic woes.

He contends that only after a thorough review of the economy’s management and faulty policies can there be genuine reform.

In an interview that was broadcast on Accra-based TV3 monitored by Countryghana, Mr. Jackson said, “The most important thing we can do today is lower the size of government, which sends a signal to all of us that we are ready to address our challenges.”

“If we change the people and we don’t challenge the policies, we don’t change the process, if we don’t change the thinking, nothing will change. I wish that those backbenchers had not just demanded somebody be changed but some people completely removed.“It is not handing over from Ofori-Atta or Charles Adu Boahen to another person who will do the same thing.”

On Tuesday, October 25, certain members of the Majority caucus sought the dismissal of Charles Adu Boahen, the Minister of State at the time, and Ken Ofori-Atta.

“We are using this method transmitting our strong desire that the President changes the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State in the Finance Ministry without further delay,” the MPs said during a press conference.

The MP’s during a press conference stated “we are by this medium communicating our strong desire that the President changes the Minister of Finance and the Minister of State in the Finance Ministry without further delay.”“We want to serve notice, and notice is hereby served that until such persons as aforementioned are made to resign or removed from office, we members of the Majority Caucus here in Parliament will not participate in any business of Government by or, for the president by any other Minster,” leader of the bloc, Andy Appiah-Kubi, Asante-Akyem North MP said.

Following a meeting held, it was revealed that President Akufo-Addo had been pleading for time for his troubled ministers, particularly given that Ghana is currently negotiating a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and that the 2023 budget is also being prepared.

Gov’t lost ¢25bn ‘to ensure Ghanaians lost out’ in banking sector when ¢5bn could’ve saved them – Bagbin

Instead of using GH¢5 billion to save some nine local banks, the government opted to use GH¢25 billion to collapse them, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has observed, saying the government erred in that decision.

“It is the focus of every country to ensure they are in control of the banking sector”, Mr Bagbin noted when he spoke to the parliamentary press corps recently, adding: “So, if we had Ghanaians with banks having challenges, it is incumbent on us to make them succeed”.

“I think our colleagues in government erred in not seeing it that way”, he told the journalists on Sunday, 30 October 2022.

He said: “They tried and ensured that Ghanaians making it in the sector lost out and instead of using about GH¢5 billion to help the banks to survive, we ended up losing GH¢25 billion, and we have still not been able to sanitise the system and there is still a lot of work to be done.”

Nine local banks were collapsed in the Bank of Ghana’s financial clean-up exercise that started in 2017.

Through the exercise, the number of banks in Ghana was cut down from 34 to 23.

Also, some 347 microfinance institutions, 15 savings and loans and eight finance houses had their licences revoked.

Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission revoked the licenses of 53 Fund Management Companies.

Among the banks collapsed was Heritage Bank Limited, which some prominent voices have repeatedly said was killed on political grounds.

According to UT Bank founder, Mr Prince Kofi Amoabeng, the Bank of Ghana was told by officialdom to collapse Mr Seidu Agongo’s Heritage Bank Limited.

Mr Amoabeng, whose bank was also collapsed in the first term of the Akufo-Addo government, told Nana Otu Darko on CTV’s morning show, Dwabre Mu, on Tuesday, 4 October 2022: “I was pained by the collapse of Heritage Bank because it was young.”

“The Bank of Ghana had issued a licence to Heritage Bank and Heritage Bank had not operated for long and, so, unlike UT Bank, it had no bad loans or anything and it was a wholly-owned Ghanaian company that we had to nurture to grow,” he explained.

“Secondly, the owners of Heritage Bank found it fit to appoint a solid board,” he noted, adding: “I mean, the chairman was [Prof] Kwesi Botchwey. When it comes to finance in this country, he is the safest hands you can get; he’s seen it all.”

“As chairman, the board members run the bank, not the owner, so, I don’t know Seidu Agongo – as I told you, I haven’t met him before – but I know Kwesi Botchwey and I know his track record. So, if you have a bank that hasn’t got any baggage, it’s fresh and it’s got a board headed by Kwesi Botchwey, then it means its closure was a worse decision than UT Bank’s,” he further noted.

“As for UT Bank, we owed and they could have bailed [us out] but decided not to bail; that’s an option. That is why I mentioned that Heritage Bank, for example, was collapsed out of sheer wickedness,” he added.

Mr Amoabeng observed that the “unfortunate thing is, the Bank of Ghana is supposed to be independent but I don’t think they were independent with their decision on Heritage Bank because, if they were independent, why do you issue a licence and withdraw it?”

“When you were issuing the licence, didn’t you know the owners and the board?” he asked.

“It means they were told to withdraw the licence,” he deducted.

“And it’s not a fair way but it’s another dangerous path that Ghana has taken,” he regretted, noting: “Every institution has been politicised including even the army.”

“And that is why I am saying that for Heritage Bank, the institution that is supposed to be independent of the government [BoG], even though in principle, issues a licence and then withdraws that licence when the company hasn’t even done anything wrong,” Mr Amoabeng added.

Mr Amoabeng made similar comments a couple of years ago, saying he found it “extremely odd” for the Bank of Ghana to have collapsed Heritage Bank Limited, which had no bad loans on its books and was being run by the “right people” within the industry.

In his view, the revocation of the licence of the Ghanaian-owned bank, whose founder, Mr Seidu Agongo, has always argued was above board, as far as its books were concerned, was not only politically motivated but also “extremely unfair and unfortunate.”

Asked directly by TV3’s Paa Kwesi Asare in an interview on Business Focus: ‘Do you think, as many think, that some of the decision to close down certain banks was politically motivated?’ Mr Amoabeng answered: “A few of them; specifically Heritage Bank.”

“I don’t understand the issue because the Chairman of the Board is Dr Kwesi Botchwey. I have a lot of respect for him when it comes to finance in this country and managing Boards and he will not, in my estimation, ever accept to be Chairman of a bank that is not right and dealing in all sorts of things. I can say that for him,” Mr Amoabeng, whose bank was also among the nine Ghanaian banks that were collapsed in the central bank’s financial clean-up exercise during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term of office, noted.

“So,” Mr Amoabeng noted, “I find it extremely odd that a bank – and it had not started doing business for it to have bad loans and all those things – and for you to say that the owner didn’t have what it takes [doesn’t meet the fit-and-proper criterion] or however they put it, I mean the owner doesn’t run the bank, he’s a Ghanaian, he’s got the money, he’s appointed the right people to run the bank for him, so, what is the excuse?”

“I find that extremely, extremely unfair,” Mr Amoabeng asserted, adding: “Maybe I don’t have all the facts, but from where I stand, I find it really unfortunate.”

The Bank of Ghana revoked Heritage Bank’s licence on Friday, 4 January 2019, on the basis that Mr Agongo, the majority shareholder, among other things, used proceeds realised from alleged fraudulent contracts he executed for the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), for which he has been facing prosecution together with former COCOBOD CEO Stephen Opuni, for the past four years.

Announcing the withdrawal of the licence, the Governor of the central bank, Dr Ernest Addison, told journalists – when asked if he did not deem the action as premature, since the COCOBOD case was still in court – that: “The issue of Heritage Bank, I wanted to get into the law with you, I don’t know if I should, but we don’t need the court’s decision to take the decisions that we have taken. We have to be sure of the sources of capital to license a bank; if we have any doubt, if we feel that it’s suspicious, just on the basis of that, we find that that is not acceptable as capital. We don’t need the court to decide for us whether anybody is ‘fit and proper’. Just being involved in a case that involves a criminal procedure makes you not fit and proper”.

However, Mr Agongo responded with a press statement in which he said that the “not fit and proper” tag stamped on him by the central bank was “capricious, arrogant, malicious and in bad faith.”

According to Mr Agongo, “In purportedly making the determination, the central bank obviously had little regard for the time-honoured principle that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction,” adding that: “The fact that I have a case pending before the High Court is a matter of public knowledge but my guilt or innocence is yet to be determined by the Honourable Court.”

“The determination that I am not a fit and proper person to be a significant shareholder of HBL because the central bank suspects the funds are derived from illicit or suspicious contracts with Cocobod is not only calculated to pre-judge the outcome of the criminal proceedings but also violative of the principle of presumption of innocence to which every individual is entitled. Since when has suspicion become a substitute for credible evidence?” Mr Agongo asked.

Also, the erstwhile Prof Botchwey Board issued a statement on the matter in which it said: “Heritage Bank was by the Bank of Ghana’s own admission, a solvent bank. It never received liquidity support from the Bank of Ghana. Its corporate governance record had never been impugned by the Bank of Ghana. We believe we have been done a grave injustice and a terrible precedent set that does not bode well for the future.”

“Akufo-Addo erred,”-There will be a haircut, says Ato Forson

0

In order to stop the current economic crisis, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, MP, Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, has stressed that Ghana’s debt restructuring will involve some “haircuts” for the nation. He holds a different opinion from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who in his speech to the nation on Sunday, October 30, unequivocally affirmed that investors’ cash in various public projects would not be lost. As the administration works to reach an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, the president underlined that measures would be made to safeguard citizens’ investments (IMF).

“I also want to assure all Ghanaians that no individual or institutional investor, including pension funds, in government treasury bills or instruments will lose their money, as a result of our ongoing IMF negotiations. There will be no ‘haircuts’ so I urge all of you to ignore the false rumours, just as, in the banking sector cleanup, government ensured that the 4.6 million depositors affected by the exercise did not lose their deposits,” Akufo-Addo said

But when referring to Accra-based In light of Ghana’s impending IMF bailout, Joy FM, the ranking member of the parliament’s finance committee, predicted that there would undoubtedly be a “haircut.”

“I don’t know the basis the President made that statement and if you run the maths, it doesn’t add up and I will be surprised that Ghana will get an IMF programme without a haircut.”I can say on authority that there would be some form of a haircut. Clearly, someone is not briefing the President properly or probably the writing did not come out well. ‘The President goofed’, he shouldn’t have said it in a categorical manner because what it has done is that, it has sent additional uncertainties to the market clearly indicating that someone is not on top of his job.”I do not know how our debt will be sustainable by the year 2028 brings to over 100 per cent…clearly indicating that we are to [remove] 50 per cent of debt without a debt restructuring, it is impossible,” Dr. Ato Forson stated

Nana Addo is Politically Dead- Martin Kpebu

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, according to outspoken private attorney Martin Kpebu, is politically dead.

He emphasized that given the current administration’s dismal performance and the abundant evidence that the president was unable to foresee any of these events, he should just eat humble pie and step down.

“He’s not a leader at all. He couldn’t even see that there was an existential threat to his government… everything has just collapsed around him. So now, where it’s gone, trust me, he will never recover from it. It’s done, I mean they’ve already come out. He’s lost legitimacy so that even reinforces the point that he should resign.

“A leader who can’t even say that let me compromise a bit: it’s all about him or the (sic). Personal aggrandizement. You see how personal aggrandizement has now led him into a ditch? So laughable, that’s why I said Rawlings who didn’t have much formal education, didn’t suffer such a blow,” he said.

Martin Kpebu claimed that the president has lost all legitimacy and that the only thing keeping him in office is what is written in a speech that was broadcast on TV3’s Key Points and was monitred by CountryGhana.

“This is a mortal blow; the president is dead, politically. The rest, he’s just floating because by the papers, he should, but legitimacy, he’s lost legitimacy,” he added.

President Nana Addo and, particularly, the Minister of Finance, have come under a lot of recent pressure over the management of the economy, which has seen many indicators looking bad for the country.

For example, the Ghana cedi has fallen by approximately 50% against the US dollar in the last ten months.

This has been coupled with inflationary pressures which have seen Ghana record a rate of 37.2 percent in September 2022 – the highest in about 20 decades.

The current economic challenges have culminated in job losses, worker agitations, rising costs of living, and a general frustration among the populace.

‘Greedy Ken Must GO’-KKD lament

Ken Ofori-Atta, minister of finance, should be fired, according to veteran broadcaster Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, also known as KKD.

KKD asserts that there is substantial evidence indicating that there have been several thefts during his administration.

The broadcaster has therefore demanded that the nation’s chief financial officer be fired.

On Monday, October 31, 2022, during an interview that Countryghana monitored on the JoyNews channel, KKD said that the choice to fire the minister was the right one, just like that of the 80 or so members of parliament who had made it known that they wanted it done.

He explained that the situation has gotten so terrible that even MPs, who typically exercise caution in their interactions .

I saw someone who had used the brand KFC. I don’t know why, but about 22 people sent it to me. but if you think of it carefully, those MPs who stood up to speak have acted with courage; courage they got from their constituents. Because don’t forget this; because of the way our government is set up, nearly every MP whose government is in power is angling for a ministerial position, so they try as much as possible not to offend the president, but I think they’ve gotten to a point where they think ‘even if this president gives me an appointment, I don’t want it,’ “he said.

Ken Ofori-Atta should be fired as the minister of finance, according to KKD.

The seasoned broadcaster demanded that he be fired, likening him to an uncle who takes advantage of a very delicate position for his own selfish goals.

He added that the finance minister’s acts and performance have brought shame on his clan and are an obvious sign of his selfishness.

“Ken must go! Ken must go because there has been too much thievery under him; thievery which we simply want to call, ‘Oh, it’s unethical’ but I’m telling if you live in a home where two children have sickle cell and one has (sic) and you have an uncle in the home that says things have gotten so bad, we need to go borrow money to perform a surgery for these children.

“And that uncle then goes to see somebody from whom he can borrow money; all he needs is a $100 million, and the person from whom he’s borrowing money, will also ensure that he makes $9.8 million, Ghanaians, will you trust that uncle? That uncle is Ken Ofori Atta

“You have embarrassed us, you have disgraced our fathers. Your father came to live a good life but you have disgraced us; you have disgraced the Akyem people and other tribes who have married into our clan because they include the Akyem, the Akuapem and the Nzema. You have disgraced us; you are greedy,” he said.

‘Sika mpɛ dede’,i for feature Nana – Shatta Wale reacts

President AkufoAddo spent some time discussing the necessity for all Ghanaians to take action to safeguard the Ghana cedi, which has been experiencing significant devaluation against the US dollar, in his speech on the state of the economy.Akufo-Addo used a French proverb about money to support his argument. It reads: “Friends, as the French would say, “Fellow Ghanaians, as the French would say, l’argent n’aime pas le bruit, to wit, money does not like noise, sika mpɛ dede.”Where there is chaos, where there is noise, where there is unrest, you will not find money. If you talk down your money, it will go down. If you allow some unidentifiable person to talk down your money, it will go down,” he stressed.Shatta Wale joined the hundreds of tweeps who commented on the quote hours after the address. Implicate Kufuor in the current economic catastrophe as well-Kofi Adams

0

The former president, John Agyekum Kufuor, should also be held accountable for the nation’s current economic woes, according to Buem MP Kofi Adams.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP noted that the current nation’s issues stem from the past president’s administration’s introduction of a redenomination of the nation’s currency.

With the arrival of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a man dubbed a “economic Wizkid,” Kofi Adams claimed that this is when the nation’s economic problems began.

“Former president Kufuor will come before even I bring Nana Addo because he was the one who Bawumia and Paul Acquah misled into believing that they are economic wizkids because they took off four zeroes from our money that it was redenomination, so, one cedi, one dollar.

“That was artificial. You spoilt our money by thinking that you cut off four zeroes from our money, that was how Bawumia got celebrated. So, the argument was that they had brought the cedi at par with the dollar… we were deceiving ourselves,” he said.

Kofi Adams went on to say that John Agyekum Kufuor got himself into the current economic situation by not telling Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo about what he called a “artificial” arrangement.

“So, President Akufo-Addo, who wasn’t an economist, who didn’t understand the economy then thought that he had gotten a Wizkid who would solve his problems for him… So, President Kufuor should have told him that it is propaganda and not a Wizkid matter, but he didn’t tell him,” he added.

In an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson of Oyerepa TV, Kofi Adams disclosed this.
